What will happen when Dallas and/or Chivas move to Tucson, then? I mean, like you predicted?

I'm glad you guys are getting The House The White Sox Built, but maybe you should worry about the Amazing Declining Attendance at the Desert Diamond Cup before you go talking smack, Brandon or Caitlin or whatever the hell your name is.

As for the fans, I hope you'll actually turn out for league matches that conflict with USMNT friendlies on television. That will be a good indicator, if you don't stay in the bar.

I see what you did there! See, their name is the Seattle Sounders, but you called them the Flounders, which is not only a fish, but a term for ineptitude! That's so clever!

The D2 Timbers were far better financed and organized (once they got through a couple of owners) than the D2 Sounders were. Which says ********-all about the two cities, no matter what you'd like it to say, but says a lot about the devotion of resources and what they actually achieve.

I think it's more "B follows A, therefore, B caused A," which is not always actually true.

Because the human mind seeks to draw connections between discrete events, this is an easy one to make (and even easier if your point is to denigrate soccer in some way). Your friend isn't the first person to try to make that connection, but I don't know how many of that very large group of people who attend Sounders' games are only there because there's no NBA team anymore. But we may find out in a somewhat decent little natural experiment if the NBA returns.

Typical facile analysis from you, who should be too old to be a fanboy.

You know what really got the media's attention? 32,523 at the opener in 2009. Averaging 30,897 the first year. That's what actually does that. Sell enough tickets, prove you matter in the community, that's when "the media" takes notice. Plus, that all coincided with the "minor league" sounders becoming....oh, yeah, the "big league" Sounders. (And the Timbers' attendance is a bit higher now than then, too, right? Think there's a correlation?)

In Philadelphia, the local sports radio stations were openly hostile towards the Union until they drew big crowds at launch and sold out the stadium in Chester. Now, who carries their games on radio, again? Drawing a blank.

    More genius from you.

Do you know what population is an indicator of? Traffic. Not the Brazilian company, but actual traffic, with cars and stuff.

How much is "enough fans to support an NASL and USL Pro side?" 2.8M is apparently enough for you, is 2 million enough? Is 1.5 enough, or too few?

How many markets have ever had both? How did you arrive at this metric? Do you have some sort of population/fan support correlation formula, one that tells you how Charleston, South Carolina (metro population 682,000) outdraws Ft. Lauderdale? Or why Los Angeles (13M in the Metro) doesn't turn out for the LA Blues (or Chivas USA, for that matter)?

Again, someone as old as you shouldn't be this naive.

Hey Kenn, I thought you were going to leave us alone to be stupid by ourselves for 2013? I guess your addiction got the better of you?

    Yeah, I'm damn clever.

Really? I'd be surprised, but you might be right on this. The Timbers were actually bankrupt there for a while and needed new owners and a city backed bailout. Which means that the Flounders would have to have been less than broke, but you might be right.

Now here you're just full of shit, which should surprise no one. The Flounders (because I don't like them) started getting great press once their new owners got involved. This was long before they actually held a game. Don't underestimate the importance of Media Love.

Notice that most of the "New MLS Cities" do well with their attendance, while many of the "Old MLS Cities" do not. In the expansion cities ('05 and later), the media saw MLS as an established league, and worthy of some note and interest. (And it might be that some of these cities had fewer existing teams). So we see great attendance in Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Philadelphia, Houston, Salt Lake, and Portland. Media attention drives at least some fan interest. If people don't know about a team, they aren't likely to go to the games. But, if the local media tell them that it's hip to go, or patriotic, or a new and different thing to do on a Saturday night, that will in fact, increase attendance.

It's not the only thing, and certainly the teams spending money to put up posters, making an effort to get themselves on local radio programs, getting their name out, beating the bushes to sell tickets, and so on, that's huge too. And notice that I never said that Media Love was the most important element, just that it was a factor.

Sheesh Kenn, grow up already. You live to put people down and act superior. Stop acting like a tool.
