Came here to publicly eat crow. I don't trust of much CW says, but when DLH comes out and says he talked to coaches like Bob Bradley about the position... well I gotta say ok, they did the work.
It's Petke as everyone assumed. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765693523/Real-Salt-Lake-hires-Mike-Petke-as-new-head-coach.html So can we close this thread now?
I'm not going to listen to that, but "Hey Bob, we're going with Petke, what do think?" "I think that's fine Dear Leader" qualifies as talking to Bob Bradley about the position. I honestly don't think they put in any work on this since Petke arrived in town.
I was wondering when we would start the Fire Mike Petke thread. It seems we always have one pop up within a week or 2 of getting a new head coach. Anyways, welcome aboard Mike Petke! I hope your days here are good, and full of less wasteful long ball, after long ball, after long ball, after...
I know some of us have heartburn about our coach's attire, and while Petke can sometimes be a little casual: he usually manages to at least wear a tie: and occasionally even manages the whole tie-and-jacket thing: Hopefully the more retentive, er, fashion-conscious among us will be pleased with this development.
I am lukewarm about what he did with NYRB, but I am also optimistic that this will work out for both parties.
I am going to proceed with the idea that all options were exhausted and that Petke was the best guy for the job. That's completely insane, but that's what I'm going with being that I don't really have any clue about how they came to a decision. It's insane, as I just mentioned, but it helps with my sanity. I think.
Certainly sounds like they did the work listening to some of the interviews. I do find it a bit dubious when Waibel says that they had interest coming in for the job from all over the world and the world of soccer and then they go and chose Petke. I get why they did it I guess, continuity. Some other things stuck out to me in the interviews. Petke has played with and sounds like is friends with the RSL team leaders. If Cassar lost the locker room last season perhaps the players played a role in getting Petke to the Monarchs. Dear Leader mentioned something about getting Mike and his wife out here for awhile to see if they liked it and would be able to live out here in the weird west. Perhaps the Monarchs gig was simply a trial run for Mike and if he liked it, he really liked it, once Cassar hit the skids for even a moment and Petke liked it out here the rug was yanked. Perhaps they wanted to pull the trigger at the end of last season but Petke didn't want to take the job and then find out he didn't like it out here and then not be happy and leave RSL in the lurch. Give him the Monarchs job, if he likes it great he can move up, if not he can give it a couple months or a season and call it good. I like a good conspiracy. Petke did "win" the interview with me. He seems a step up from Jeff. Not a full step, but that one weird step that's just a little shorter than the others and makes you stumble a little. That step up. I hope he does well. Sadly, I went and got my hopes up. Dangit!
So, how quickly do y'all think we'll start seeing changes in the assistant coaches? Which positions would you prioritize? Any thoughts about who might fit well? I really hope Freddy Juarez stays - though his wikipedia page needs some love: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddy_Juarez
When I heard the news earlier today, my first thought was "Is it too soon to launch the Fire Petke thread?"
Granted, I didn't listen to the presser...but technically, "coaches like Bob Bradley" could mean "coaches who have managed the MetroStars/Red Bulls"...in which case it could mean, we talked to Petke. Anyways, I wish him luck. I hope we develop a system, strategy and tactics that fit our young players, and I am glad he got to spend (some) time with our pipeline. And I hope we don't need a new coach for a long long time. Welcome to the Riot, Mike!
Is this is directed at me? This is directed at me I'll tell you one thing from listening to Petke talk - he sounds like a head coach. No bullshit giggles like Jeff would sometime be subject to. No long pauses with "uh...." in there. The dude has an idea. I'm also discovering that the way his accent comes across gave me a man crush and I'm telling to much so I should shutup now
The only thing better would be if he had a thick Scottish accent and reminisced about soccer riots in Glasgow.
In an ideal world, RSL ends up with possibly a different coach, or at least does more work to come to their conclusion. We don't live in an ideal world. Far from. With that said, we have to live with this timeline (Community FTW) and make due. So, when is a good time to start truly accessing Mike Petke as a coach? He is going to be in a box or in the stands for the Minnesota game. The Vancouver home game will be his first one on the bench. However, 3-4 days of training is not adequate time to implement the "small changes" that he wants. No matter how small they may be. So what arbitrary date in the future makes sense as a marker for "This is a Mike Petke team"? Hey, remember that big club from Europe that is coming to town? Man, that will be fun. When is that? July? Hmm. That's like 3ish months from now. That's about enough time to make a change in... HEY WAIT A MINUTE! That game is 11 games (not including any possible USOC games) away. You take away the Minesotta game and would you look at that, Petke has 10 matches to make this change. I'm going to use this thread to track what differences we see. The #CassarTactics thread is dead after Saturday's game. #PetkeTactics here we come
While accessing Petke might be interesting, it is doubtful. But, assessing him....yes, we can do that! I think the first game is fair play to begin. As far as the time given to prove himself, I think he should be given through the 2018 season, unless the wheels just fall off the jalopy.
I thought the same thing. He spoke well, spoke with confidence, but also showed respect for the situation around him. I had my reservations about him before, but the way he spoke, the way he deflected questions to show respect to Jeff, and the way he spoke about the team, changed my mind. He seems to have a plan on how he wants to run the team, and he seems like a guy that knows how to execute the plan and get results. I'm willing to parlay my reservations for now.
