Think he would add something to any coaching staff!

My worst nightmare is they carve out a position for him at NYCFC.

I wouldn't be shocked if Mastroeni gets canned by the summer and Petke takes over in Colorado.

Didn't he get a contract extension just months before the canned him? Hopefully taking it easy, collecting his checks, then who knows ... Colorado or someone else who wants a change before end of season

Bite your tongue. That would surely suck.

Putting my emotions aside, this would potentially be a real smart move by NYCFC. There is so much hatred for RB and Curtis that a Petke hire might lure some of fans that have had enough.

Petke is really just a lightening rod for whats wrong with Red Bull. They are trying so hard to try connect with our past. 20 from 20. Rolling out players like Wolly before the matches. Little nods to Metro on our jersey. Signage in the South Ward celebrating the supporter groups.

This all sounds great on paper. It really does. With Red Bull though, it is just not genuine. It is just marketing, nothing more. Until NYCFC came along, we didn't care at all about our history. Now without Henry and Cahill around we needed to sell something, so we are all of a sudden all 'interested' in our history and trying to sell it.

This is not DeGrandpre's passion. Its just a business strategy cooked up in the RB boardroom, not something burning from inside his heart.

    There is just no authenticity.

I honestly do not know much if anything about Petke. I know he was highly liked by the Red Bulls fan base, but beyond that, I know he has good fashion sense. What are/were his strengths and weaknesses as a Head Coach? What kind of a coach was he? Seeing as how he might be RSL's new head man, I am curious to learn more about what we might expect.

Mike was in the unenviable position of corporate lacky while he was here. Red Bull wanted another coach (ANY other coach), but for some reason they couldn't get a deal done so he was the default. Then he went and did what no other coach in 20 years had done and brought us our first trophy. Dealing with Henry and Cahill (especially Cahill) wasn't easy. And it wasn't easy to deal with a roster that had a LOT of problems because his predecessors basically brought a bunch of guys in who couldn't cut it. Said guys also ruined our cap.

So Mike came in, got Henry and Cahill on point, brought in a bunch of MLS guys both on the field and off to bolster the roster, and made sure we were organized and worked hard. People will tell you "He's not a tactics guy". I'm not sure that's true. Red Bull corporate were in a "win now" mentality and IMO he did the best with what he had. When Henry and Cahill left and Red Bull higher up management changed over it seemed like we were finally going to see who Petke really was as a coach. He talked about wanting to focus on young academy talents as well as building a squad of MLS savy guys. He never got that chance because he was axed.

Hope that helps. Gotta tell you almost every Red Bull fan is happy to see him finally get a shot at coaching the way HE wants to do things.

Your last paragraph sounds like a manager who wants to do things the way RSL management wants them done. Building and focusing on the acadamy. I can understand why he would be limited in what he can do in a short time with a roster that was setup the way it was. It will be interesting to see how he does in his new role with RSL.

Yes--actually sounds like RSL is the ideal situation, away from the glare. Gets to build a program without those win now expectations. We are a franchise in transition--hopefully our solid young prospects (who represented in CONCACAF U20) are something he can build around.

So happy to see Petke back in MLS. One of the good guys for sure.
And now I have a team in the other conference to root for :)

That article says he went to St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. That's very close to my dentist.
