I have American Constitutional Law: The Structure of Government by Ralph A. Rossum and G. Alan Tarr. The book is a combination of text by the authors and Supreme Court cases. On one hand, I don't know if I could get the text from these cases online if I didn't have the book, which I used in college in Fall 2006. One the other hand, how much credit do Rossum and Tarr deserve from me if I use cases as sources but not anything Rossum and Tarr wrote? I've seen citation formats for books with an editor but no author. Some books are entirely combinations of cases, stories, or articles, with an author or editor maybe contributing an introduction. That is not the case for the book I'm using. If I use something written by Rossum and Tarr (not from a case), I will obviously cite them.

    Can you help me?

Sorry it took me all day. My reference books are at work. You can probably find what you need here.

    https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/09/

It will depend on what format you're using. MLA would probably have you quoting the pasage you need, then giving the reference parenthetically < (qtd. in Rossum and Tarr 412) > or whatever the page is.

    APA is different: http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2013/10/citing-court-decisions-in-apa-style.html

I would also recommend checking with the professor; I never object to a serious question when it is clear that the student is trying to avoid plagiarism. Let me know if you have another question.

One of the beautiful things about a well-cited book is that you are permitted to do additional research by going to the source. In this case, it is possible (probable?) that Rossum and Tarr selected part of the case rather than providing all of it. But they cited it, so you can go get it at https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/opinions.aspx or through other online databases (are you still affiliated with a university? If so, then the database offerings through your library are probably extensive, and this is a truly amazing research tool).

I'm going to use MLA documentation. I'm not a student now. Ismitje's link didn't have any Supreme Court cases before 1991. Rossum and Tarr provides cases with ellipsis (three dots) in places, so I don't know how long the full opinions are.

I'm trying to write about if the Constitution should be interpreted by "the intent of the framers" considering the many issues now that were not relevant or possible in the 1700s. The current issues include abortion and illegal immigration.

Don't know if you're still working on this topic, but I can not recommend Lee Epstein enough.

    One of her books: https://www.amazon.com/Choices-Just...8851402?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1489090482&sr=1-3

She is bigly into reviewing justice notes, understanding contemporaneous politics/institutional attitudes and how those affect decisions and court opinions.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have enough pages of books I read years ago and journal articles that I'm not looking for other sources.

The next think I might ask for advice here is a thesis and introduction paragraph. If I do write this, it will take months or years because I'm only doing a tiny bit at a time.
