Yes, 1978 is a clearer case, but I dont think 1979 is much different. I am sure Dynamo Tbilisi was at least a half decent side as you mention at the time, but it had never once moved past third round in any European competition up to then.
Was his form really "scintillating" for the NT? You know, you can score goals and not have a fantastic game and viceversa, not score goals and show great form and skills. We both know we wont reach an agreement here, lets just let it rest man.

This is undoubtedly the case. Teams were able to hold onto their talent longer, with the Bosman ruling essentially the catalyst for the change that has resulted in the modern dynamics we've seen today. And it's getting worse and worse.

Porto could very well be the last Non Top 4 League team to win the Champions League, bar any Arab/Russian meddling.

I have to say I love Pele and he's such a nice person! Messi is incredibly rude to a lot of his fans, unreasonable and selfish. I think there's more to a Ballon d'or than just playing amazing football. But that's just my opinion :D

I would argue that Messi and Cristiano probably have more 'fans' approaching them than Pele does these days. And 30-40 years from now the day's current superstar will have more 'fans' approaching him than there will be approaching Cristiano and Messi.
Along those lines, players of yeateryear are probably "nicer" than today's players because today's players have so many (business) obligations to attend to and have microscopes placed on them so much that it's enough to make any sane person go crazy.
On the flip side, retired players probably miss the limelight so much that they are willing, almost eager, to engage with the public so that their playing exploits are known by future generations of fans.

I guess you have a good point here. But compared to Messi, I find Ronaldo is still a lot more patient and happy to share a few "selfies" and does a lot for charity etc. whereas Messi tends to ignore them. I saw a video where Neymar and Messi arrive at some empty airport and theres only a few press cameras and a really old die hard fan (probably in his late 70's) and all he wanted was an autograph.

Neymar without hesitation took a picture and signed a shirt, whereas Messi pretends not to see him and completely ignores the old man.

Besides, if you make millions of dollars per week I guess you could give back to some who actually made you that rich.

Some years can be guessed through this thread:
