So the GM sits above the coach? What influence do they normally have? Is it similar to the European Technical Director of Football role? Where they sign players to fit into the team but leave the management and running of the team to the coach?
Basically yes, but a little more fluid depending on the philosophy of the team and how the coach and GM work out the interaction. I don't think a GM here would generally ram a player down a coach's throat if the coach really doesn't think that player works with what the coach wants to do.
Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese is now available. Hes an interesting candidate. Has experience with youth. Assembled the cosmo team from scratch and has experience coaching talents like Raul and Senna. Coming from the Cosmos he probably has the confidence that matches the Galaxy organization. I'm not familiar enough to know his coaching or tactical abilities
If they do go with Onalfo, he may not have any assistants left to choose from the senior squad assuming they follow Bruce to the USMNT. That could mean the return of Kris Kelderman to MLS, who was Onalfo's top assistant at KC and DC. Kelderman's been coaching at UW-Milwaukee since then. I can't imagine Onalfo and Kelderman commanding the same respect with DPs as Arena and Sarachan.
Vermes is out, if he was ever considered. Just signed a contract extension with SKC, he’s one of the few in MLS, perhaps my top pick actually. He ticks most of the boxes for me: Built a competitive & successful roster Re-built the team a few times Builds teams that are competitive every season Builds teams that play attractive soccer One MLS Cups, Two USOCs, Two Supporters’ Shields Good eye for under-the-radar talent Good mix of youth & experience The only thing missing is how he might handle a super-star DP signing, but he doesn’t strike me as the type to take any guff.
I don't know how things will work with Pete, but in the overall American sports model, its the coaches/manager's job to adjust to and make the best of the talent provided. As they always say, its easier to replace the coach then the players.
Here's a different name: Andreas Herzog. Played for the Galaxy and, has the international playing pedigree to hold his own with any DP we might bring in. Knows the USMNT/MLS talent pool as well as anyone right now, and is looking for work in the SoCal area. Back in my "media" days I spoke with him several times, and he's a bright guy, knows the game like few I have met, and would be great for some of our young guys.
Andreas has been Klinsmans assistant coach since before the 2014 WC until JK was fired. I am not blaming him for the results but it certainly casts doubts about his coaching chops as its hard to imagine him being anything more than a yes man.
Having worked as a coach in this country for the past three decades, I will say that it would be a grave mistake to think Andi is anyone's "yes" man because he has worked his way up the ladder, keeping his mouth shut and paying his dues. He's a terrific coach, with a better tactical grasp than his quiet demeanor might suggest. Many #2's get saddled with their boss's reputation, but that is seldom the case. Most are dying to be their "own man". And I think coaching at the NT level is very different than coaching at a club, week in and week out.
No thanks. For better or worse, I don't want anyone with Klinsmann stink on him. Plus, he's never managed a club team before. Hard pass.
I cannot find any info anywhere that he's managed a club team at any level. Got a source? Even if he's managed in the Austrian Landesliga, that's not exactly a level that make me consider him a good candidate.
Herzog only has NT coaching experience http://www.transfermarkt.com/andreas-herzog/profil/trainer/2464
I can't find it either. For some reason I thought when he got bounced from our team at the end of 2004 he did his UEFA coaching licenses and took over a lower division Austrian Club, but it looks like he wound up as a caretaker for the Austrian National team that year so obviously that wasn't the case. Not sure why I thought that. Btw, the landesligas in Austria are several levels down on the football pyramid there and usually semi-pro. So no, that wouldn't exactly be a ringing endorsement
Hopefully Curt Onfolo doesn't get the the first team gig and decides to move on to seek other opportunities. If that happens I wouldn't be opposed to having Herzog take over Los Dos; perhaps with an eye to take over the first team down the road if things work out.
I want news! Don't any of our crack journos have a source that can leak something about the progress, actual targets, etc. (One thought - MLS may have imposed a gag order so as not to upstage the Pretenders Cup.)
Wahl said that Onalfo is the favorite to replace Arena. http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/201...ed-almiron-guardado?xid=socialflow_twitter_si
