Ian and Sylvia +1 Odetta +1 What, no Weavers? -1 LOL Here's my favorite Ian and Sylvia. I wore out the grooves of my folk's album listening to this:
Operas, 1890-1900: 1) La Boheme (Puccini) 2) Queen of Spades (Tchaikovsky) 3) Falstaff (Verdi 4) Tosca (Puccini) 5) Thais (Massenet) 6) Prince Igor (Borodin) 7) Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) 8) Sadko (Rimsky-Korsokov) 9) Manon Lascaut (Puccini) 10) Cendrillon (Massenet) 11) The Tsar's Bride (Rimsky-Korsokov) 12) Iolantha (Tchaikovsky) 13) Fedora (Giordano) 14) Il Pagliacci (Leoncavallo) 15) Andrea Chenier (Geordano) 16) L'Amico Fritz (Mascagni 17) Werther (Massenet) 18) La Cavaliera Rusticana (Mascagni) 19) I Medici (Leoncavallo) 20) La Boheme (Leoncavallo.)
I started with 45 tracks. A couple of Weavers songs got lost cutting it to 20-- "Wasn't That A Time" and something else, I forget what. "Reuben James" probably... "Someday Soon" and "Song For Canada" from Ian and Sylvia also didn't make it through...

So I've been working on this list for more than a week given the criteria I set for it. These are songs I loved in high school and/or college that no more than one of my friends or family members also loved or could sing along to. Many of them were popular in their own right I am sure, just not at my schools. But that criteria really made it tough to identify songs, since I had to think through who else I knew that liked them. I started high school in 1981 so this is an 80s list. Funny thing about songs you love that other people don't; you can get positively preachy trying to convince other people your song or artist is worth it. In alphabetical order by song title: "All You Zombies" - The Hooters "And we Danced" - The Hooters "Ba Ba Ba Ba" - The Seventy Sevens "Cry" - Godley and Creme (a stretch since the song became popular several years later) "Cynical Girl" - Marshall Crenshaw "Everywhere I Go" - The Call "Hero" - Steve Taylor "I Still Believe" - The Call "Justice and Independence '85" - John Cougar Mellencamp (popular album, obscure song) "La Pistola y el Corazon" - Los Lobos "Lawless Avenues" - Jackson Browne "Make a Circuit with Me" - The Polecats "One Time, One Night" - Los Lobos "Set Me Free (Rosa Lee)" - Los Lobos "Someday, Someway" - Marshall Crenshaw "(Something Inside) So Strong" - Labi Siffre "Sun City" - Artists United Against Apartheid "The Walls Came Down" - The Call "World Destruction" - Time Zone "You Little Thief" - Feargal Sharkey

In case my posts in this thread didn't indicate how much I love this thread idea, here's my props to @Auriaprottu for starting this. Reminds me of 'High Fidelity' and all it's top five lists - I've got a ton more I could do - including 90s alt/indie, late 90s/early 00s downtempo - and the best of the last ten years. I'm also considering the best of CanCon by decade from the 70s thru 00s. Thanks everyone for the contributions - this will energize my music hunting habits for a while. So. Much. Goodness.
