Nice Article about Fox's on screen response to ESPN. http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/2015/06/07/hope-solo-womens-world-cup-espn-fox-sports-outside-lines
NEID was pretty stuck up the way she responded to it. "My girls aren't "partygoers". My girls are good girls." Honestly it made no sense why they asked her and her response made even more little sense.
Well yes, this is exactly the time that the plaintiffs would have the most media visability in the "court of public opinion". But, those same plaintiffs e.g. the other side of the Solo family were Supposed to be in court back in January. If they were so injured -- why did they not show up in court when requested by the court? So now, there is no testimony -- because they skipped the real court, with a real judge. What was put out yesterday is just allegations. i.e. there is nothing new fact wise. I'm not giving Hope Solo a pass -- I'm saying the other side of her family can't have it both ways. And right now, there are no charges pending. That's why USSF moved forward, that's why the WNT is moving on, with Solo in goal.
Sometimes family does not make the best legal decisions when other family is involved. They didn't account for Solo going to the media to disparage them after the fact.
The writer of the above article, Richard Deitsch has some decent points, but I'll take issue with one paragraph he writes:
For me, as a viewer, the best sports analysts are those no longer beholden to their past athletic lives. They are analysts first, not a former player-turned analyst. My thought is that if you are still beholden to a former team or university or teammate, you can’t fully represent the viewer. Some would argue no sports analyst is truly separate from their former life and if so, then I tend to favor those who come closest to that ideal.
Rich, they are players turned analysts. They wouldn't have been hired if they hadn't been players. But they aren't hired to "represent" the viewers, they are hired to make the sports program palatable so that the viewer will tune in and be attracted to the sponsors AND the other programming on the channel. In that regard, it doesn't matter if they identify with their former national team or not. Fox addresses the "former team" issue by hiring analysts who were players on different teams -- so far I'm counting USA, Canada, Germany, Mexico, and England internationals serving as analysts. For a month long soccer tournament -- I don't care if the analyst say "we" or not -- what I ask is that they are honest when the team doesn't perform well. Canada's former player said that Canada came out flat against China. I'm expecting Hucles, Osbourne, Mitts, Wynalda and Lalas to take the USA to task if they come out flat tomorrow and have a nil nil draw with Australia. It's different when analysts are covering a league with club teams (regardless of sport) and they are on the national network of that sport. Then they really have to divorce their old team colors from their commentary, because they have to appear balanced all season long. In that regard, Deitsch's request is quite reasonable.
I've liked Richard Deitsch in the past for his takes on media. Somewhat ironically, he may be losing the perspective that helped him make his name. He has been doing a lot more quantity work recently. I've heard him doing a lot more interviews and other media as well.
ESPN would hate it so much if one of their shared "properties" was successful and popular so more people watched. That would show them.
I have a feeling this is the last World Cup we will see Hope Solo in. IMO, her problems off the field are taking a toll on the Fed. They don't need this. This WWC is the last effort for what I call the "Good-Ole girls Club" of April, Jill and all their friends that constantly circle around this USWNT in the last 8 years and Wambach, their Field General. They must win - they need Hope Solo for this one. Just my opinion. But after this World Cup...
The same women defending Hope Solo are the same ones who buried Ray Rice. They are all hypocrites and support child abuse. I have given up on this team. I am supporting Australia. I may be on the losing side but I feel like I am on the right side.
No need to give up supporting your team. Just be a voice of reason amidst a sea of sheep. Remember, the are other ladies on that team, who most likely share your sentiments, yet have been threatened into silence and have to toe the line. Unfortunate, but it happens.
A couple people have brought up the no new information....There is a slew of new info...primarily that the interviews and depositions that were supposed to be sealed somehow ended up in the hands of ESPN. Won't that be detrimental to the prosecutions case? On another note, her Jailhouse belligerence is similar to some of the actions she was witnessed to while her Husband was being hauled off. From every account. Hope was lucky she was not arrested that night as well for Obstruction of Justice
help!! i'm somewhere in the middle here. i would dearly love it to be so, but i think it's nonsense to expect driven athletes who push themselves to extremes to succeed, not to have any brushes with the law.. but the public as a whole - not me alone - makes that call. on that note, i remember at the time of the case that there was doubt as to the veracity of what hope's relatives were claiming. is there a reason that we are taking their depositions as gospel now even tho they did not show up in court when they had such a strong case? and is it reasonable to say that if the authorities themselves did not convict solo for the way she behaved toward the officers, that we should let it go as well?
I thought her behavior was noted previously/in initial reports. Perhaps I'm mixing up separate incidents though. I guess that's where I gave her the benefit of doubt.
there's no elevator video but like Adrian Peterson's son there are police photos of the 17 year olds bloody ear, scratched arm, torn t-shirt and her half-sisters marks as well. is that a good enough false equivalence for you?
What she said to the cops sounds a lot like what Britt McHenry said to that tow lot attendant. Questioning one (I'm assuming a female) officer's femininity by calling her a "14 year old boy", making fun of their salaries. All really classy stuff.
As someone who has met McHenry and knows several people who know her, I admit I enjoyed that video going viral. The funny thing is if she could have kept quiet after the fact and nothing would have happened. A local blog mentioned her angry tweets. Then the tow company employee told her side in the comment section and eventually posted proof. I think it was nearly 2 weeks later when it went viral and became a larger local and national story.
Poor choice of words, many of Solo's current and former teammates and supporters were calling for Ray Rice to be arrested and kicked out of the NFL last September on Twitter.
Good points but I don't like a good number of players on this team and I don't believe they deserve a WC. It's not all about Solo. I also have a soft spot for the Aussies.
