The only leverage players have with the media is lack of content. Anything else u do, admit it, deny, scream about just helps media. Reporters without access become better golfers.
If Hope really did do all those things that her opposition is accusing her of (i.e. if Hope's own self-told story is wrong), then the real punishment that would make her learn her lesson and never do it again is to have her supposed internet nude pictures pop up on the jumbo-tron for at least 5 minutes straight at the World Cup. I guarantee if that happens, she'll never assault anyone ever again.
The simple truth is that Hope Solo is no better than Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson and Gulati is no better than Godell.
It's still possible that Hope's side of the story is accurate. Although Vegas odds are 2-to-1 against it.
Even if you're prepared to believe that Solo beat the crap out of a 40-something woman in self-defense, I find it troubling that our country is being represented by someone who speaks in the following manner to a police officer who is just doing their job: "You're such a b----. You're scared of me because you know that if the handcuffs were off, I'd kick your ass." As that's just the start of it.
US Soccer looks really bad if what the article said about them is true. As for Solo, she could tell me that the sky was blue and I wouldn't believe her.
More so. Hey the USWNT is playing a game tomorrow, how about we talk about that. Which I agree with. ESPN is looking for web hits. And to stir the pot. This is still he said she said. But to have the entire panel have to sit and discuss an old story, that was brought back up just for ratings isn't something I'd want to talk about either. Wynalda wanted to talk about the game too.
ESPN is butt-hurt that Fox is covering this World Cup and that ratings are already higher than initially anticipated.
Honestly, I still think they'd find a way to work it in somehow.................. It's what sells sadly. I mean they asked Neid about it, REALLY!!!!!!!
No it's not. It's she said/she said. But I do agree with you. ESPN's timing looks bad here, coming just before an event that someone else is broadcasting. And in the absence of a videotape of the event (like the one in the Ray Rice case), the USSF has no responsibility to act independently as a law-enforcement agency. I think it made the right choice in waiting for a court to rule.
Different categories of domestic abuse is still domestic abuse whether it is child discipline, spousal or a family dispute gone wrong and is not a false equivalency. And the lack of a thorough investigation by U.S. Soccer in this case is comparable to the NFL's shoddy investigating initially done in the Ray Rice case.
Court already ruled, but I guess the State is looking for another bite at the apple. Odds are usually really against that....
It's only she said/she said if you willfully ignore all of the third-party facts that today's excellent report has brought to light. At this point, there is well documented evidence of significant injuries on one side, while the other side adamantly refused to allow police to examine the bump on her head. In addition, Solo interactions with police indicate a complete lack of self-control.
The ESPN report indicated that no ruling has been made on the facts of the case. Was that inaccurate? Maybe so. The State probably wasn't too excited about the way that she celebrated her lawyer's skills by getting out-of-control drunk again with her husband while they were driving around in someone else's vehicle in the middle of the night. Solo did a brilliant job of tearing up for the cameras for Good Morning America, though. Let's all just feel sympathy for her and pretend these things never happened.
I might be fighting against the tide here but, I do not think US Soccer needs to be "investigating" anything. That is what the criminal justice system is for.
"CNN affiliate KOMO reported that attorney Todd Maybrown successfully argued in court that he couldn't depose witnesses for the prosecution because they refused to be questioned despite a court order." http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/13/justice/hope-solo-charges-dropped/ Sounds like the witnesses would not testify. That means the facts in front of the Court, which the defense is entitled to scrutinize, would not support the case. It is not a pure procedural matter, IMO.
I really meant that the USSF is waiting for a court to rule against her. I thought that was implied, but I should have spelled it out better.
The judge did dismiss on a procedural matter, but the prosecution got approval to appeal so the court hasn't really ruled on the case. Those who think that this is "sour grapes" from ESPN would have to remember that the guy doing the story was one of those that worked on the "League of Denial" documentary with PBS. He stayed on even though ESPN pulled its support from that documentary. He went with the story regardless how the Solo/USWNT faithful thought. Compare this to Kate Fagan who went from being critical of Solo to apologizing to suggesting that sports need "flawed characters" like Solo. Not to mention the rest of the fluff coming from ESPN and ESPNW. All this long after Fox Sports won the right to a contract.
Imo, people who represent our country should be held to a higher standard than "Sure, I got drunk and beat the crap out of some people and then wouldn't leave their home so I got arrested and then I directed loads of verbal abuse at the police and had to be forced to the ground ... but hey, I've got a great lawyer and wasn't convicted of anything."
It would not be surprising if they just did not investigate. Hope Solo will indirectly affect a lot money for womens soccer in the US and the womens national team members. Why take any extra steps that would jeopardize that?
Yes, this is what FOX Sports and espn are going to go to war over because of a contract for a tournament 11 years from now that will likely be disputed. Who cares that they share and cross-promote the SUM deal for the USSF and MLS for the immediate future? Who cares about any other bids (mostly in other sports) that they have launched together to block NBCSN. ESPN and FOX Sports are going to go to war over Hope Solo. Billions of dollars over Hope Solo... that's believable. Hope Solo made her case in the media* while it was not officially closed. She essentially slandered her "family" and expected them to be ok with it. The timing of this isn't coincidental, but it all has to do with the family's side getting visibility and not being buried as a local news story. From a purely sports point of view, this adds more eyes to the Women's World Cup. No new information was released. Many people simply ignored it before or chose to dismiss it in all of its trashy ridiculousness. Giving the plaintiffs a face makes everything more "real" for the general public. Ray Rice's actions were horrible, but then the video came out and everything was "real." It wasn't text that was knocked out, it was his soon-to-be wife. Now people are finally seeing Solo's sister is a real, live, human-being and mother. At what other time could the plaintiff have more visibility? Of course they moved for an interview now. I'm sure OTL and espn the magazine were thrilled to be handed this with the raised visibility and popularity of soccer coverage recently. *For those who it might have been lost on earlier, Good Morning America is on abc. ESPN and ABC are part of Disney. That's why there is espn branded content on espn. Robin Roberts was known nationally for her work on espn long begore GMA.
