No the Hillsborough event was simply stand terrace this is pretty much seating with very thin foldup chairs to make the aisle have more room.
It there any chance it could be resurrected? What would need to happen to save the original deal, or what modifications would need to be made to that deal to build the stadium at the original site?
Some have noted that one of the strange proposals made for a stadium for NYCFC was a floating field or entire stadium... then this shows up yesterday for St. Louis trying to keep the Rams. Look carefully at the rendering. The field looks to be about 4 or 5 stories in the air. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...rendering-plans-for-new-st-louis-rams-stadium
Right! Just to add to that: be careful what you wish for. A baseball stadium in a good location is still better than a great soccer stadium in Yonkers or anywhere like that. There already is an MLS team in a horrible location.
I was wondering the same thing SoccerPrime. I believe NY can pull it off. It took DC about 18 months after 7+ years of frustration with the right leaders. I believe NY can do it and that the team playing will help! Good luck to NY.
I'm fine with just staying at the Yankees stadium indefinitely. This place totally works for me. A stadium would be nice, but it's not a must have in my opinion. It's such a quintessential experience riding the subway to the stadium, this is what NYC FC is supposed to be about. A stadium out in Long Island somewhere doesn't really fit into this scheme.
I agree with you for the most part. I would prefer YS over a stadium in a less than ideal location. That's why I would LOVE to see the new grounds get built where the parking garage is. Hopefully that plan get's resurrected somehow because the location of Yankee Stadium is excellent!
I disagree with the two posts above. I think a soccer-specific stadium is a must. The seats at Yankee Stadium are too far from the pitch, there's too much of a gap. A closer, intimate experience makes for a much better atmosphere. A 30-thousand seated stadium would be ideal. Corona Park in Queens would be perfect. Take the MTA subway 7 train or LIRR to Mets Willets Point and you're there.
Just curious, of the 3 of you, how many were actually there on Sunday? And when it comes down to it, it can only work if the grounds can handle both Yanks and NYC all season and the pitch/sitelines work. Since Yankees are part owner, it could last indefinitely if the other criteria are met.
I was there. Personally, I prefer a smaller stadium with seats closer to the pitch for a more intimate experience like I mentioned before. A stadium like Red Bull Arena would be OK, or Quakes' new Avaya Stadium would be even better. I saw Arsenal at Highbury many years ago and it was amazing. EDIT: Also, some of the Yankees players are already whining about our use of their pitch.
I'll be honest, the game didn't look too bad on TV. I was impressed. And its grass with no noticeable gaps in the the infield parts. I mean it could work if everything else worked. Of course the soccer stadium is 200% better, but its not bad if it can be like it was today for every home match. If Seattle, NE and Atlanta can share a stadium with owners other team and their on turf, than Yankees stadium can work.
I have to say that I actually did not mind the strange shape of the seating and sight lines as much as I thought I would. It is one of the reasons I held of on buying season tickets. But now that I have been I am considering actually buying them now. It is also a hell of a lot easier to get to than RBA. Also it may have just been the service changes but the D train is a much better option than the 4. The only real issue I had was actually getting inside the stadium. It may have been because of the Mayor but the security was asinine, and it took almost 45 min to get inside.
I was there. I didn't mind where I was sitting at all, and I had the behind the goal seats with the poorest vantage point. Personally, I had a very pleasant experience. Being a Queens resident I'm 50/50 on having the stadium here. Not sure if I want the additional cars and traffic on the LIE, Grand Central Pkway, etc on the weekend. This is what it looked like for me:
I heard about that, but that wasn't my experience....I arrived about an hour early, walked right through the gates, and went to have some drinks at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Don't kid yourself - Yankee stadium went better than expected but there is no substitute for an SSS. Maybe you haven't been to RBA, but the atmosphere is a lot better and the views of the game, size of the field, etc. make a big difference. I will say I'm loving the plush seating in our cheap seats and there was definitely a more adult feel to the fans - Red Bull Arena often feels like a play date while this game was much more young adults who are drinking and swearing - more my scene.
I agree that it has to be done, but I can handle YS for awhile if need be. Maybe my opinion will change if future matches lose a bunch of the steam that yesterday had, but I believe the excellent location makes up for a lot of the shortcomings of YS. Sure, the midfield seats are a mile away, but there are a ton of seats right on top of the field behind the goals. It could be better, and I agree Corona park would be great. I'm saying that I would take YS instead of an out-of-the-way SSS.. I was there, and as an sth will be there often. Yesterday actually made me feel much more comfortable with the club and the stadium situation after growing hesitation over the last several months. Unfortunately, that is a new Yankee Stadium feature for all events. Hopefully they figure out ways to improve upon that process. If you walked around further from the subway area, the lines were much shorter because most everyone comes either right from the Subway/Metro, and much of the parking leads to most people going straight to gates 4-6.
I hope most NYCFC fans share that same sentiment. Staying in Yankee Stadium indefinitely would be an utter shame. Unthinkable. Who cares about Yankee Stadium and its history anyway? It's not OUR stadium. It belong to the Yankees. It's their history, not ours. How about we cultivate our own history by building our own SSS? Aesthetically, Yankee stadium is ugly for soccer matches. It's awkward. Have you seen Houston Dynamos house? Or Sporting Kansas stadium? We should have a stadium like that. If our situation was identical to Seattle Sounders and CenturyLink Field, I wouldn't be too bothered, but it's not.
I still think a SSS is a must at some point. But I'm fine with staying in Yankee Stadium for at least a few more years until they can find a place. I'm still holding out for the Bronx location. It's just too perfect to pass up.
Do you know what real estate costs in NYC compared to a similar plot of land in Houston? Building a stadium in NYC for an unproven franchise is a very risky capital expanditure. What if the franchise loses steam and folds? What would they do with a stadium if only 5,000 tickets were sold for the opener? This is a gift horse, we as fans don't deserve shit until we prove our attendance at home games over the course of a few seasons.
