Guess what?!? I actually like it even more now in contemplation of how the team specific logos will work
Stolen from Reddit: "The line sticking out represents MLS pulling random rules out of its ass." Hard to beat that. That said: I'm neutral. I like the idea of a highly fluid system that can work with any color scheme, any kit, or incorporating stills and video. But it's kind of boring in and of itself. However, as we all should know: boring and neutral is better than crazy and specific. True Story Alert: I was just sharing my blasé response to this with an office - mate. I said I'm sure the designers have some elaborate explanation about what the slash symbolizes and how intentional it is. "In fact," I said, "There's this whole website devoted to the elaborate bullshit that designers tell clients... here let me see if I can find it...." Then> BOOM! > Top of the Page: "The slash refers to soccer’s speed and energy. The slash begins outside the perimeter and drives upward at a 45-degree angle to illustrate both the nonstop nature of our game and the rising trajectory of our league..." http://designjargonbullshit.com/
Also, there will be another new MLS match ball next year, as well as a redesign of the league’s website.— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) September 18, 2014
I dunno.. I think the kickstands represents the fact that MLS still needs to be propped up and can't stand on it's own.
The website redesign will likely be far, far more questionable than this logo. I'm sure it'll be something idiotic that's designed exclusively for touch. Because that's the trend these days. Witness: http://www.ussoccer.com/
I like it. I like the idea that they are going to allow color swaps for the uniforms. And yeah, the marketing speak is silly, but this is the only time you will ever have to read it.
I've seen the "If you have to explain it, it's a bad logo" theme on this thread several times. Re-branding almost ALWAYS comes with a super-lame explanation of the new graphics. From the official explanation of the Premier League logo the last time it was changed: "The switch to uppercase instead of the lowercase of the English Premier League font is a reflection of its growing importance in the world of football." They explained the font choice. The real reason they chose that font? Because the head of marketing liked it better than the other ones. All of the "explanation" is just so the press will have an excuse to do a full article. For the record, I like it better than the old logo, which screamed "We're the little brother of MLB, NFL, and NBA." In fact, I like it full stop. That being said, I'm never going to base my opinion of the league on its logo, and neither does anybody else... for any league anywhere. The Major League Baseball logo is a man with a bird's head watching a pitch sail past him (clearly he's way too late to swing at it, but having eyes on either side of your head makes depth perception difficult).
I wasn't sure what was wrong with the old one, but this is even worse. This looks like it was designed by a committee. Grape job, MLS.
I think it's funny hearing a number of people wishing there were a soccer ball in the logo. The last big thread we had on the logo had people just riled up at the continued existence of graphical evidence of soccer. Now it's all "We don't have a soccerly logo! Everyone's gonna think this thing on all the professional soccer jerseys is a realty service!"
RedBull (with Henry holding up the logo) and 7up (on a sign-board behind an LD image) have already shown up in this thread, much earlier.
I honestly don't see how this logo does not quickly make a connection (for anyone) between Major League Soccer and what it represents. It's a crest with the letters "MLS" on it. That's all it needs to be.
When I saw this, I immediately thought of all the potential rivalry potential between supports with this new logo. My initial reaction was I didn't like, the explanation of the elements made me want to vomit, but at the end of the day it won't bother me in the slightest one way or another. The fact that they highlighted Andrew Hauptman as part of the group leading this effort even makes more sense to me as a Fire fan. He is killing that club with this type of BS.
It's a damn shame (in some ways) that Columbus is rebranding this off-season, because that looks awesome.
