Groups 4 and 5 are down to 3 teams each due to the Chikungunya virus - Guadeloupe and Anguilla withdrew.

Technically, that means there are only 2 groups with 4 teams, and St. Kitts and St. Vincent advance to the final round. This is unfair on the teams who finished 2nd in the 3-team groups (Puerto Rico and probably Cuba and Dominican Republic). They should take away results against the 4th-placed teams to give an equal chance for all 2nd-placed teams to qualify. Puerto Rico/Cuba/Dominican Republic are much better than St. Kitts/St. Vincent, who only qualify because they played very weak teams and were lucky that nobody withdrew from their group.

Totally agree with you . Puerto Rico , Cuba and the Dominican Republic should protest against CONCACAF . These countries are not guilty of Dominica , Anguilla and Guadelupe withdraw . The final group 1 is just a joke and a free path for Trinidad &Tobago ( St. Kitts , Antigua and Martinique ) OMG .

No word from CFU about how they will decide the best 2 runners-up, but when the original draw was made, Bermuda were not in it, and there were 4 groups of 4 teams, and 1 group of 3 teams. The note below the draw stated that only the runners-up from the 4-team groups would be considered.

It seems all groups will get a chance at best 2nd place, so it would appear results against the 4th placed team in the two 4-team groups will be discounted. In that case, Cuba and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines are both eliminated. Puerto Rico will qualify as either best or 2nd best runners-up and the second qualifier will be Saint Kitts & Nevis unless the second placed team out of Dominican Republic/Jamaica/Saint Lucia can better their record (3 points, 6-3 goals).

Here CFU makes it clear that the loser of the Haiti-Cuba match would still be in with a shout of advancing.

According to this tweet of Balompie Dominicano. 3 hours ago , It won't happen .

" As usual in CFU some nations are harmed by the withdraw of other. It seems intentional "

No official news from CFU yet - they just implied that Cuba would still have a chance despite losing to Haiti (actually then are out, no matter what system is used). I updated the Wikipedia page myself based on the implied information from CFU, because so far they have not been clear.

it's been confirmed that 4 CFU teams will advance to the CONCACAF Finals and that Canada will not participate.

The draw for the CFU Finals(Aug. 19-26):
GROUP A: Jamaica, Haiti, Bermuda, Puerto Rico
GROUPB: Trinidad & Tobago, Antigua & Barbuda, Martinique, St. Kitts & Nevis

Trinidad & Tobago will play two friendly matches against Venezuela on sunday and wednesday . Maybe both are thinking about the play-off place ? ( 4 th CONCACAF vs 3th CONMEBOL )

I think they're just getting practice in before a major competition. I think it's a stretch for Venezuela to be going for 3rd in CONMEBOL - I wouldn't be surprised if they make the final four-team group, since the two five-team initial groups are unbalanced, but I would be surprised if they managed to get third in that group. Probably a stretch for T&T to finish 4th in CONCACAF as well, though after Costa Rica it's a real black box of which are the "strong" teams.

Trinidad & Tobago , Guatemala or maybe Jamaica for that 0.5 spot .....

I'd add Panama into the mix - they placed 4th in both the U17 and U20 competitions in 2012 - and Haiti, as they always seem to get at least one win in the final group stages of CONCACAF tournaments.

Like I said, it doesn't matter who get the .5 spot because none of those teams will have a shot against the 3rd best team from Conmebol. Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay >>>> Panama, Jamaica, T&T

Well, this is the CONCACAF thread, so we're going to discuss it. You also haven't said that yet in this thread. ;) (And: really, Uruguay? :ROFLMAO: While I agree CONMEBOL 3 > CONCACAF 4, Uruguay are even more of a long shot than Venezuela are! Besides, T&T, Jamaica, Haiti, & Panama are all higher-ranked ATM anyway.)

Oh, I would have sworn I did; at least I thought it. Yeah I can see the argument for Uruguay not being in there but they've had some close games and Peru also could stand a chance. Conmebol is really unpredictable other than that Brazil will qualify. Anyways, I am stunned that Concacaf got 3.5 in addition to Canada let alone 3. Costa Rica will be lucky to not end up with a -15 goal differential.

You're selling Costa Rica quite short. They've regularly held the US to just 3 goals recently, and have also had a 1-2 game against Brazil and 3-3 against Argentina. They're not the minnows you're thinking they are. There are several posters here and on Equalizer who would say CRC > MEX.

You also have to consider that, at worst, they'd face a top UEFA team, a middle UEFA team, and Brazil - and that's assuming Brazil doesn't get seeded. More likely than not, they'll face one top-6 team, one middle UEFA team, and one team that's either middle-CONMEBOL or CAF. I'd guess that's (-3 to -5), (0 to -3), and (+2 to -2), for a total of (-1 to -10).

Well the last time they played the US, the score was 8-0; and it could have been more. I don't really see any major improvement from them in the past 2 years, while I see massive improvement from "middle" UEFA teams such as Switzerland and Spain.
Let's give them 3 different draws ranging from most difficult to best possible; (they will have to play either Japan, Germany, France and Brazil given they can't play US or Canada)...
So say they play Japan, Netherlands, and New Zealand...

    Worst Draw: Germany, Netherlands, Australia
    0-8 to Germany
    0-6 to Netherlands
    0-4 to Australia
    So -18
    --------------
Ok Draw: Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand
    0-6 to Japan
    1-4 to Switzerland
    0-3 to New Zealand
    So -12
    ---------------
Best Draw: Brazil, Ghana, Thailand (probably not even possible)
    0-3 to Brazil
    0-1 to Ghana
    2-1 over Thailand
    so -3

So really it depends on the draw. I'm not sure how the pots will work but I'm sure Thailand, all the African teams, and Costa Rica will all be in the same pot so the last draw is highly unlikely. I would say -10 to -15 is accurate but who knows. I thought Eq. Guinea would lose every game by 5 goals and they actually did quite well. There performance at the qualifiers will give a good indication of what to expect.

Venezuela's U17s were exceptional and played with gusto. Lots of countries experimenting with youth, hope their seniors can deploy some of that youth and surprise in qualifying.

Quite a change from the last time they played in 2010 and Venezuela beat them 1-0. The residual effect of Even Pellerud's term there.

New T&T coach Randy Waldrum was to be flying in and on the bench but the T&T men's coach (ex-Canadian men's coach) Stephen Hart has been running the teams training and was expected to run things yesterday. Long-time women's coach Marlon Charles was offered the Women's TD, turned it down to be involved in coaching, was offered an assistant to Waldrum, accepted it and then turned it down too (he had been Waldrum's assistant previously with the U17s).

Venezuela are playing a number of games in Trinidad. The first was against an all-star team of their club teams which they won, then yesterday and tomorrow and against the nationals and the club all-stars again on Thursday. The club all-stars were mostly U17 with a couple U20 and seniors sprinkled in, and Venezuela won 9-0. Half-time in the international game yesterday was 1-0 Trinidad.

I counted seven U17's on the Venezuelan squad in Trinidad. Not sure how many U20's but they started an extremely young side:
    http://goo.gl/q7EOYK
    http://goo.gl/SPMAeH

I also noticed Deyna Castellanos kept her #9. Gee, I wonder who that is on the right:
    http://goo.gl/Ym3mng

At considerable expense, T&T are doing a month long camp in Houston before the CFU championships August 16-27, and will play Mexico twice while there. Waldrum is running the team pro-bono through the CFU's.

Or should I say T&T are supposedly doing a month long camp in Houston; the T&T Football Federation haven't paid their staff for two months and their phones were cut off a few days ago. They're waiting for the first installment of their $5 million FIFA handout. The TTFF is rumoured to be about $30 million in debt. As one astute Trinidadian said, that's a lot of bake sales.
