Most of the San Jose fanbase is from the South Bay and the Peninsula. I think most soccer fans in SF are Euro-snobs.

    There's 825,000 people in SF. Of that 825K I suspect that ...
    • Most ignore the Earthquakes because they don't like sports
    • The next most ignore the Earthquakes because they don't like soccer
    • The next most ignore the Earthquakes because they don't like MLS soccer
    • And some ignore the the Earthquakes because they're not from The City. San Francisco is historically known for her snobishness. "There is no there, there" is a common San Franciscan reference to neighboring cities, Oakland in particular. Snobishness is part of her charm.
That said, I know Earthquake season ticket holders from SF.

Makes you wonder what they'll do when the 49ers open up 1/2 mile outside of San Jose city limits.

I live in San Francisco and have been a STH for all MLS years. The trip to San Jose or Santa Clara from San Francisco is pretty long, at least an hour, and getting longer each year, especially during the week.

I know a few other San Francisco STH's. When we bring friends to matches, only the most avid soccer fans want to return. The distance and time required to attend from SF is a big hinderance, but so is the substandard condition of Buck Shaw.

Many avid San Francisco football fans are immigrants from Latin America or Europe and are more interested in following their favorite teams and leagues on television or online than attending a live MLS match and making the Earthquakes their team.

Regardless of where people live in the Bay Area, fan support for the Earthquakes is intense but not broad. Those that attend are knowledgeable and passionate, but the numbers are relatively small for the population of the area. Otherwise, every match at tiny Buck Shaw would be sold out well in advance.

The rainbow brush image above is unfunny and irrelevant.

BS is all over with the promos... gotta get a head-start! Blue jeans fit Earthquakes colors better than it does 49ers too!

I know tons of STH (read that > 10 people) from the East Bay and SJE generally does a good job partnering with the East Bay soccer leagues (I believe John Doyle is still part of the Danville Mustang league).

I would guess the reason many folks don't come from S.F. is because it's a pain in the ass to get to the South Bay from S.F. and most folks from S.F. are not used to commuting (for many of us outside of S.F. commuting is the norm).

Everywhere and Nowhere.....I'm the wind, baby.
I'd guess stadium management likes to have a 'practice run' or two to work out any bugs before hosting its first NFL game. Soccer's perfect for that.

Yep. A lot of concessions and toilets being used simultaneously during the halftime break.

This is a famous Gertrude Stein quote about her return to Oakland after having lived in France for several decades... it needn't carry any snobby connotations (though it probably does), it was originally meant as a lament of her childhood home being razed.

It definitely does, even though people outside the bubble know what she meant.

I don't want to speak on behalf of every LA supporter, but ...

Speaking on behalf of every LA supporter everywhere ever -- I'm not sure there are two fanbases more perfectly suited to each other.

So, you know, by all means. . .

And IIRC they got great attendance because of all the Patriots fans who just wanted to check out the stadium.
