"Earthquakes to open Levi's Stadium with match against Seattle Sounders FC" (SJEarthquakes.com - Thursday, 10/31/13) It'll be interesting to see how 49ers fans who aren't also already soccer fans feel about their new stadium opening with a soccer game. -G
The first two sporting events at Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium) were soccer games. First was a Gold Cup quarterfinal double-header and then a game between Chelsea and Club America. I don't pay a lot of attention to Cowboy's fans but I don't remember hearing about anyone upset about it.
It's just coincidental that it's the sounders. It could have been anyone. That is just the time they need to beta test the stadium ; quakes had a home date; and the quakes gladly volunteered. They will get a huge gate ...,
And I think the Seahawks stadium was opened by the USL-1 Sounders, and before that the Kingdome opened by the NASL Sounders.
Opening of the stadium - USL Sounders vs Vancouver Whitecaps in 2002( I was there) with 20k in attendance but first big game was next year Man.U vs Celtic with full house 67k
Probably still play that game at Stanford Stadium (SJ will be home 2x next year for this game) and then get a big crowd for the Levi's opener regardless of opponent.
Exactly. Although, I'd put even money on this game not being played on 8/2/14, as likely Seattle will have to re-schedule so they can face some amazing club team in a friendly that weekend. Certainly, once Seattle wins the 2013 MLS Cup, they'll be obligated to appear in the next edition of the International Champions Cup in 2014.
Philadelphia Eagles stadium opened with a match between Manchester United and FC Barcelona in 2003. MetLife Stadium (New York Giants) hosted a soccer match before first NFL game. It is almost becoming normal for most of these new NFL stadiums to host a soccer match before their first NFL game.
"The Earthquakes will play host to Seattle Sounders FC in one of Major League Soccer’s most heated rivalries on August 2, 2014." ???????
I have a strong feeling that the opening of the stadium is actually going to be LA vs. Seattle but there was a misprint or something like that along the way
Do people from San Francisco consider San Jose their team or do they ignore them because they are from San Jose?
