I think the first tiebreaker is goals scored like last year. (The MLS Let's Change The Rule Mid-Season For LA and NY)

I so want to be optimistic but yesterday's result makes it way too difficult.

That doesn't help us all that much unless Houston suddenly and conveniently collapses.

    Dear Kurva,

All sports are a numbers game.

PS. The overseas Chinese gambling syndicates also say "hi" but they're busy fixing European match results.

Yes - and nobody is putting big money on the Fire to win anything because they suck!

MATH.......We needed to WIN that game, plain and simple. In the last 9 games, we are on the road for 6 of them here's some MATH for you, we are 2-3-6 (WTL) for a .318 winning percentage (NOT GOOD). Yes we play some shitty (Oh wait s*****) on the road, but we haven't been world beaters on the road either (NO sure thing on the road).

So you had the Houston and Toronto games as a tie and DC United game as a loss and we still make the playoffs. What are your prediction for the rest of the games and how many points do we finish with (7 games)?

    vs. Houston (TIE)
    @ Seattle
    @ Toronto (TIE)
    vs. New England
    @ Columbus
    vs. Montreal
    @ DC United (LOSS)
    @ FC Dallas
    vs. Toronto
    @ New York

Please show me your MATH and how we make the playoffs.

Split next week and the Fire go up +10% from 28%,
    win both +36%

lose both and it is pretty much over

@ Seattle -- Win (I have predicted this win for a while, the Fire have to win on the plastic crap some time)
@ Toronto --draw (Toronto are desperate and ripe for the picking, but that desparation may pay off for them in a bad 1-1 draw)
vs. New England -- win (I cannot predict anything other than a loss for a team with Matt Reis on it)
@ Columbus -- win (F the yellow team and their "massive" fans)
vs. Montreal -- win (We will be desperate for this win)
@ DC United -- win (Revenge for the US Open Cup loss. I hope they win the US Open Cup and lose everything else)
@ FC Dallas -- draw (We can't win everything, we struggle in Dallass, and I have never given a crap about Brimstone)
vs. Toronto-- win (We drew with them in Toronto, let's beat the crap out of them now)
@ New York-- loss (We will be in the playoffs, but will be behind New York, they will be fighting for first place in the Conference and they we will want to keep us down)

20 out of possible 27 points should do it for us.

    This IS the Optimism Thread

Then why haven't you picked us to run the table with a combined goal total of Fire = 438, opponents = 0?

The math comment was in response to calling a drop to 28% "season ending". That's more than a little extreme.

I don't think I'm good at predictions or anything; these were just gut reactions based on how we've played these teams recently, what their form was in August, and whether they were losing players to qualifiers. Notably, I have missed on a number of the non-Fire games.

My predictions (Actually starting a month ago):
    Montreal (WIN - check)
at New England (LOSS - check)
    SKC (WIN - check)
    vs. Houston (TIE - check)
    At Seattle (TIE)
    At Toronto (TIE)
    vs. New England (WIN)
    At Columbus (TIE)
    vs. Montreal (WIN)
    At DC United (LOSS)
    AT FC Dallas (LOSS)
    vs. Toronto (WIN)
    At New York (LOSS)

3-3-3 the rest of the way gives us 12 points, which sits us on 47.

I have Houston going 4-4-1, finishing at 53
I have NYRB going 4-1-2, finishing at 55
I have Montreal going 3-2-4, finishing at 53
I have SKC going 4-0-3, finishing at 54.
So, basically, we won't even be competing with any of them. We'll be down competing for the final slot with:

Philly, going 1-2-4, finishing at 44 (losses at San Jose, at SKC, at DC, at Montreal, draws home against Houston, SKC, win over TFC)
New England, going 2-3-3, finishing at 46 (losses at Chicago, at NY, at Montreal; draws home and away with Columbus, home against Houston; wins at home over Montreal and DC United)

Looking at this, it's clear that I'm not unrealistic about the Fire; rather, I just have poor opinions of Philly and New England, and an unrealistically positive opinion of Houston.

But hey, this is the optimism thread, and this scenario is certainly well within the realm of possibility. And that's if we don't start playing well the rest of the way.

What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

What the ******** happened to the Fire fans I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest season of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Rios, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this.

For those who have said we'll lose to Dallas, you do realize that their 3-1 over Chivas two weeks ago was their first win since May 25? They are crap crap crap. A point would be a miserable failure there. Thats an almost certain "W" unless the team just decides not to care (which is always possible, I suppose).

Their season and ours are mirror images.

We completely sucked until we got Magee. Then we hit the perfect patch of scrub teams instantly after getting Magee and so we loaded up on points against the dregs (thank heavens!) and we've been OK ever since but we've struggled against good teams.

The first thing to remember about Dallas is that they are in the West which is much tougher than the East. Their early run of good form coincided with them playing more teams from the East. When you look at who they've played during the time they've faltered... LA twice, Portland twice, Seattle, RSL, KC, Montreal. Their only two easy games were against Chivas USA. And most of those games were draws, not losses. If you think the Fire would've done as well let alone better against those teams, you're delusional.

Can we win against Dallas? Well, this year we've seen that any team can beat any other team on the right day so I certainly would like to see us whup their ass. Looking strictly objectively, however, I still say we're underdogs for that game.

You think we'll win two out of our last 8. Take this to the pessimism thread.

That's me being Optimist. evilmonkeycmand predicted only 12pts out of 27, I predicted 8 out of 27 not much of a difference. You don't want to see what I really think.:)

There's a difference between 'optimism' and 'insanity'.

Also, I was never one of the 'Superfans' on SNL.
