Have you re-read some of your other comments? One has to wonder.

"Shakhter" means miner in Russian and other Slavic languages. Hence the large amount of Eastern European teams with that nickname in mining towns.

Karagandy is a small city in Kazakhstan.

It means miner for East Slavic languages (Ukraine/Russia/Belarus), but it's different for South and West Slavs. In South Slavic languages it is "rudar." Kazakhstan isn't Slavic but "shakhter" is probably a recognizable loanword there.

Thanks, I was letting my Eastern Slavic bias get the better of me.

Wow, is there going to be any posts about the subject? I'd like to know how Aron is doing.. Seems slow for him the last couple of games. Was he not starting today?

The language discussions are my favorite part of BigSoccer.

Aron played as a sub today (~20 mins) as AZ tied 1-1 with Vitesse. He apparently didn't do that much in the game.

Saw the game, he came in with 20 min. left, by then the opposite team was pushing for an equalizer. he didn't get no service except for the 50 yard mark long ball pass that the line judge called him off-side, replay showed that he was still in his own half but it was close. Other than that, was an uneventful 20 minutes for him. On the positive side, he did not get injured so he should be ok to go for next Friday.

As an obsessive Bacon fan I don't like that they took it easy with his minutes because of how it affects his stats, but if you look at AZ's schedule there has been a lot of games in a short span.. it is good he will be fresh for friday

Aron was subbed off after he had taken a hit in the Thursday part of the game against Atromitos. He couldn't play the remainder the next day and didn't complete training on Saturday. Verbeek didn't want to risk further injury by having him playing a full match against the Chelsea branch office.

Scored another PK today in AZ's 3:0 win over the Go Ahead Eagles. He was brought down in the box after a nifty move around a defender.

"...Aron Jóhannsson got back on the scoresheet on Sunday, firing the penalty-kick opener that would be all AZ Alkmaar needed to see off Go Ahead Eagles in a 3-0 win at AFAS-Stadion.
Less than four minutes in, the US forward drew a good save with an audacious curling lob from about 30 yards to the right. At the half-hour mark, Jóhannsson was tripped up after wiggling into the area from the left flank before coolly making it a perfect three-for-three from the spot on the young season.
The Icelandic-American should have added an assist just after intermission, only to watch Viktor Elm stumble in somehow pushing his soft centering feed wide from the goalmouth. In the end, Jóhannsson settled for his fourth goal in six Eredivisie games this term and a four-spot jump for AZ to fifth place...."

He kind of dummies it to himself with a no touch nutmeg. That was outrageous.

The dude stays on his feet. And scores pretty good PK's.

The only negative to come out of the last two WCQs is that Aron didn't get more minutes. I understand the decision to have EJ in front of him, and it obviously paid off, but Aron is too good to sit on the bench and I hope he starts/plays the full 90 in the upcoming WCQs.

Not the place for this discussion, but that is not true. Watch the Mexico match- as "bad" as Clint is right now, he didn't go anywhere on the field without two green shirts tracking him. That opens a lot of holes for other players.

Back to Bacon (mmmm, makes me hungry). The interesting thing to me is how he plays such a good Center Forward for AZ. Watching him before he made the switch, I would not have predicted that. Bodes well if he can continue, because a CF that can bring the ball down and then create on his own the way AJ does now can be a very, very valuable commodity.

  17. That's what Verbeek's job is..to see the hidden qualities.
And verbeek is good at getting people score alot.

Need to keep that discussion in the US forum.

Whatever, the guy is a solid player. Here's hoping he drops double digits this year and gets a move to a bigger side to keep his development on a stable trajectory. I think he would so well in Germany right now. Good movement, pace, technique with his feet. The only thing that I haven't seen much or at all with him is his aerial game. Does he have any goals scored with his head? It seems that AZ doesn't really play the route one game or cross from the flanks thing much.

A mention on Aron's Facebook page from Danny Koevermans of Toronto FC who spent a couple of years at AZ:

Translated from Dutch: "That's a young guy who immediately stands out. It's not for nothing that he's an international with the US. He is explosive and he knows how to make goals. I think AZ will experience much enjoyment with him."

Credit ESPNFC for confusing everyone by changing the goal back and forth between the "Johan*sson Brothers."
