How dare companies bid highly. Soccer players are just too darned greedy. But seriously, will this change mean an official change from the rave green, which is awful close to Xbox green from what I see?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/nov/23/arsenal-emirates-airline-sponsorship-deal If only we can get a sponsorship deal like this.
Sorry for the massively late response: The true reason for my post that I wouldn't wear a jersey with Emirates accross the front runs pretty deep and is a longer story than any of you wish to hear. If you're really curious, you could watch this video, but suffice it to say that I won't support that company and don't want to encourage my team to support them either. I love it that the Sounders have XBOX as their sponsor, because I'm all for local branding. I would be happy with companies like Boeing, Ranier, Amazon, or even switching the XBOX to Microsoft. Not sure how I would feel about Starbucks, though. There are so many Seattle corporations to choose from that there's really no excuse to look elsewhere. It's too bad Portland snatched up Alaska Airlines, because that would've been a good one (yes the Timbers looked to Seattle for their sponsor, and Tacoma for their new coach). And to answer your question, yes, I own two Sounders jerseys with XBOX and Xbox 360 Live accross the fronts respectively.
If the Sounders did get a terrible sponsor I would simply continue to rock the XBOX jersey. It's not like I wouldn't be able to watch them play anymore. Besides, these new shale kits are pretty sweet. I think that should get me through the next 5 years.
With the recent rumors about the new xbox console I really hope the sounders move on to a new sponsor. If you're a gamer and you know what's going on you'd definitely be upset on what they're trying to do. Even though it's rumors the evidence are mounting up and I don't like where it's going.
And if Sounders won't get a sponsor good enough for your taste in the next 30 or 40 years, you could wear the jersey retro style. Or better yet buy a training shirt. If all you think about shirt sponsorships is aesthetics, then that's you. I'd just prefer for Sounders to get a sponsor that would bring big $$$$ and help us get 3 Oba's every year.
I have friends who work for NBA teams that tell me jersey sponsorships are inevitable. Take that FWIW.
he presented a pretty valid ethical reason for not wanting to own a shirt with Emirates on it and then said he'd keep supporting the team... not seeing why that was an issue? I think Seattle has enough corporate support that it's not an issue. Why not Costco?
Because the Sounders don't see themselves as just a local brand and want to expand to an international brand... You also have to find a local company that is willing to pony up enough cash.
at the end of the day, it's still MLS and no matter how big a fish the Sounders are they're still limited by the size of the pond. I think Emirates would be a fine sponsor and would be a great brand building exercise, but I also think if Costco or Puget Sound Energy or Safeco comes calling you might have to listen. two companies not mentioned here that are Seattle based and could bring a lot of brand power to the table worldwide: T-Mobile and Expedia.com
Note the part about the local companies needing to pony up the cash. Realistically, the Sounders don't need a local company to improve ties to the community. If a local company approaches the Sounders, the Sounders will listen, but they need to match or exceed the non-local company.
It seems like he didn't even read my post, let alone see what the video was. Either way he clearly didn't understand my point.
I vote for Costco, Expedia, or.... Amazon. All local, all international, all able to cough up the dough.
Emirates Airline Inks Jersey Deal With NASL Cosmos http://m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2013/06/03/Marketing-and-Sponsorship/Cosmos.aspx
When I started seeing Starbucks advertising during the games I couldn't help but wonder if they are next. Local yet international ... But would they really want to sponsor a team?
Hanauer was asked about the expiring jersey sponsor after today's practice and after checking with the team spokesperson, he pulled a no comment, but the way he pulled the no comment makes it seem like they already have the deal inked... http://blogs.seattletimes.com/sound...ing-a-friendly-in-2014-the-rsl-game-and-more/
