Call & answer style, all on Bill's cadence: "Who's gonna win?" "R - S - L" "Who's gonna win?" "R - S - L" "What if (insert city/mascot of opposing team) scores?" "It just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter!" Now if we were Portland, we could totally make this happen.
He probably couldn't understand them, since he speaks very little English. He is just so happy to be playing in the USA and getting paid more than $8 a game, like he was in Cuba. I think the altitude and lack of humidity was causing havoc with our overhit passes. Our guys left on a 90 degree/ 90 percent humidity day. Had to be much nicer there, than it was here.
Didn't know he was Cuban (his last name doesn't give much away), but whether he understood us or not he was clearly glad to be playing and was having fun with the fans. That's always cool to see. Lack of humidity probably didn't help, but I suspect the altitude was a huge factor, not just in passing but in why your players were pretty well gassed at the end of 90 minutes. There's more than 3/4 of a mile elevation difference between Charleston and Salt Lake; if you don't have some time to acclimate to that it's a tough thing to take.
This is pretty much how I have been feeling about Stephenson lately. He comes off as lazy, makes pretty boneheaded passes and plays, and doesn't really help the team at all defensively. Then out of nowhere he'll score a 20 yard blast to shut me up. I actually prefer the way Sandoval does it because he is at least pushing himself and working hard every game, and really deserves it for giving his all, whereas I don't really feel like Stephenson is giving his all. That midfield position is without a doubt the weakest offensive link on the team. I don't feel like we have a guy who gets the job done. Ned is the obvious starter on the other side. He is playing lights out right now, however the opposite side is struggling. Gil is wildly inconsistent, Seba plays splendidly as a sub, but when given the starting position fails to impress (perhaps his quick feet are only quick against a tired defense?), Stephenson is good for a long blast here and there, but that's about it. I guess the obvious choice from a coaches perspective would be Stephenson because if all of them aren't doing well you may as well go with the guy who is putting the ball in the net, though I would rather see Seba get the start because I feel he has the most potential of the three, and generally speaking the more playing time you give him the faster he reaches that potential. Who knows though. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what this team would look like had we kept Will Johnson...
Over hit passes? You had a couple of over hit crosses, but most of your passes seemed dead on. I was amazed at how well your CB placed some of his balls over the top. That dude had as good a touch as any on the field.
this the diagonal balls they were hitting, in particular, were spot on. And the subsequent touches were magnificent. The striker Charleston had out there had a really good first touch that was scaring the crap out of Nat all night. And the wing player going at Wingert with the cool hair? Dude was legit. Wingert got burned on numerous occassions on nothing but pure physical attributes.
I was impressed with their team overall. Had this not been at altitude, I think it could've been a very different game. And while I'd like to just win the next one in regulation, overtime really helps put things in favor of us.
Note: the last time we won a cup that wasn't the RMC, it took quite a bit of extra time to get there. Maybe this is our way of winning in tournaments?
the forward is Dane Kelly a Jamaica while the guy on the wings were Jose Cuevas and Quinton Griffith. Griffith is the one you are talking about and he is the one from Antigua that could have run for his country in the Olympics. Cuevas has been nursing an injury I think a couple of our players would be in MLS if they didn't take an international spot. Seems like MLS want to bring in a big impact player if they use a foreign roster spot. FYI on the next round. The Battery played two matches against Carolina in the preseason. Charleston won both of them. Granted it was preseason but it was with the roster they typically start with.
our captain Colin Falvey. Has had some interest from MLS but being Irish, he takes an international spot.
Wanted to throw my 0.02 in on the supporters situation after this open cup game. I have to say that this was probably the best I've heard the supporters come through in a broadcast in a LONG LONG time, if not ever. And the audio on the webcast was awful, in fact it was so bad I had to switch to the radio feed at half time (which then spawned the second half future/past remarks) and it still sounded amazing through the radio feed. I could hear all the distinct chants (yes, even the distasteful ones) very clearly, I even remarked after the "it's all your fault" chant how I felt bad for the keeper because he couldn't do anything on any of the goals. Not sure if it was mic placement or just blind luck but it's definitely the clearest and best I've heard the stadium atmosphere at Rio Tinto from a tv/web broadcast. I have to say it's because the drums weren't overpowering the chants.
I think the boos were because the team showed no urgency as time was running out in the half. Everyone in the crowd was yelling "Attack!". Instead they were playing a lot of negative passes and other non-threatening play.
Okay, I feel kind of dumb. I went to the RSL website and they have a section on chants and they have one for when the other team scores. http://www.realsaltlake.com/content/chants
The "Claret...Cobalt" chant is so simple, there is no reason we shouldn't be able to get the entire stadium chanting it. Do an East and West side chant for respective parts. That could sound really good.
Except that in a crowded stadium, a newbie will have no idea what words you're saying.. it's like you're saying "red...blue." As far as they know, you could be saying "clarinet" and "go bald."
Very true. When I was younger I went to a Weird Al concert. At the end of the set, everyone was chanting "One more song!", but to we it sounded like "Watermelon!". So, I started chanting "Watermelon!", and it basically killed the chant in my section.
Would've worked fine at a Gallagher concert. I went to a concert he "hosted" at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater - Gallagher's Rock 'n Roll Party - in 1986. The bands were Fishbone, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and someone else. And folks did indeed chant for the watermelon.
I wish they would have put those chants on youtube clips instead of audio clips. It would have made them much easier to spread around to people (it's a pain in the ass to get those audio clips to work on my phone, at least). The "yell for RSL" chant is a really catchy one once it gets going. not sure if you guys heard it, but it was fairly loud during this game - sometime in the second half. i think we had leveled it up or were about to. well done 35
