Pajoy still sucks. The great play at the end wouldn't have been necessary if DeLeon had slotted the ball to Salihi instead of shanking the shot. Wait - did I mention that Pajoy still sucks. How he stayed in the game when Santos came out is beyond me. Worthless soccer player.

Isn't that what the beginning of the game is for?

"if current East leaders Sporting KC lose on Wednesday in their season finale vs. Philadelphia, 2nd-place D.C. United can overtake them for the top spot in the East with a win in Chicago on Saturday. United would jump past SKC on the first tiebreaker (goals scored). The situation is so fluid that D.C. could potentially fall to the No. 4 seed and a Knockout Round match against No. 5."

In Ben's postgame presser he said Boskovic has the highest soccer IQ on the club. And it sure showed tonight. Our other benchwarmer, Hamdi Salihi, set DeLeon up beautifully for a shot that would have won the match, but Nick sent it into near space (he was gassed, I think). The better play would have been a return ball to Salihi - game over. But then clever Branko sends an over-the-shoulder pass into space and the veteran Lewis Neal seals the deal. Great anticipation all around: Bosko anticipated the run and Neal anticipated Bosko's pass.

BTW, I love Korb, but playing on the left side but almost never trusting his left foot to make a decent cross hurts us, because by the time he cuts the ball back onto his favored right foot the defense has had a few seconds to recover. Lewis Neal at LB? I think that's where Ben put him in his first match.

And apropos of nothing, Eddie Gaven, good as he is, looks consumptive. I half expect him to be taken off the pitch and ensconced in a TB sanitarium, if they still exist.

They only exist in places like Columbus, where science has yet to gain a foothold.

Finally home. Incredible game! Although the subs are still a bit confusing (ideally they would be starters). They seem to work miracles.

What an unbelievable night! It was like the old days! Well done and well deserved! We needed this and the team needed this. We lose our star player and Benny comes up with a system and line up that gives us wins! Wow! So good to be back in the playoffs again.

No pressure? Chicago just sled in 3rd place tonight after losing to NE, they'll want to regain the best seed and they're only one point below us. If we lose we could in theory still slide to fourth place. It's a huge game with a lot of pressure instead, and we need to do our best to at least come out with a point from out there

One thing I love about a DC game like that one, is that at some point in the second half many times you don't hear a difference in the volume of the crowd during the buildup to a goal and once it actually goes in.

Some stadiums seem quieter until the ball actually hits the net and people are like, oh they scored!

But when the "regulars" fill the seats in The Old Girl, it's more like there's a sense of expectation, dare I say belief, and the slightly incremental roar unstoppably wills the players forward and the ball into the goal like a wave that crashes onto shore.

At least, that's what it feels like when you're there. I love that.

This is what happened with the DeLeon goal. The 'slightly incremental roar' kind of pushed that ball in the net, or so it seemed.

This game reminded me of the United-Crew playoff match back in '99. The Crew had won the first leg and there was some hand wringing before the match. However, the fans could feel United were the better team and they ended up winning easily 3-0. But I remember that match so well because of the euphoria from the fans, especially after Etcheverry's free kick goal. It was the same tonight after Neal's winner, just bananas.

United completely dominated the second half, Warzycha is dreaming if he thinks they deserved better. No way.

I'm watching the replay now. Great performances from Kitchen and Saragosa. Higuain did nothing. Pajoy's touch just wasn't there, but he worked his ass off, making numerous defensive plays right outside his own penalty box. DeLeon, Najar, and Korb were too much for the Crew, it reminded me of what teams like KC have done to DC earlier this season.

United has found another gear. With some luck and better play in both boxes (where the hell was McDonald going on that first goal?), anything can happen.

Most of you were at the game and may not have been able to see, but man, Arieta for the Crew was playing such a little bitch. EVERY single time the camera had a closeup on him he was calling one of our players an hijo de puta.

Between that and Eddie ********ing Gaven (who I feel like I've been hating for longer than half of the teams in this league have even existed) I'm really glad the boys put the Crew in their place. Big win for the guys and it shows that they've matured under Ben's leadership.

It was ugly, but playoff teams win these type of games and DC United got the result.

However, it is self evident that both Bosko and Salihi need to be on the field!

Maybe Ben is saving them for the playoffs...

    A couple of random thoughts:

    What a weird, magical night.

DCU's first goal was a comedy of errors from both teams. DC didn't deserve that goal since every pass, dribble, and shot in the sequence was a profile in incompetence. On the other hand Columbus seemed to be willing it into their own goal.

The goal Columbus scored moments later would have had Richard Dawkins disgustedly throwing his arms in the air and renouncing physics in favor of divine intervention. God, evidently, gave Columbus that goal just so he could laugh at their misery as DCU came from behind and knocked them out of the playoffs. Thanks, God. You're totally awesome.

RFK is the best stadium in MLS. Last night was further proof, as if any was needed.

Jurisevic has been the top MLS referee for a couple of years IMO and he showed his quality again last night. My only complaint, and it's not a huge one really, is that Pontius and Gaven both deserved yellow for simulations in the box.

Andy Najar, after 9 games in that position, is the best right back in MLS.

    LOL

you have to admit Olsen's plan has produced results. it may be that he knows something we don't. I think this team could win the MLS cup and the morning after the same posters would be on here saying it was nice but really Salihi and Boskovic should have played more.

also how about some propers to BMac, our minutes leader, for that assist to saragosa. he has been lambasted on this board all year but no way are United in the playoffs without him.

I dunno. On one hand, our first goal shouldn't have counted as Pajoy was offside earlier in the play when the pass to him was made. OTOH, I don't feel too bad about it, as we should have had a penalty call in our favor earlier. That's the one that I think looks bad on the center ref: I think that was unquestionably a penalty; but if you're the center ref, and you think that wasn't a penalty, then you have to give Chris Pontius a yellow card for simulation. The fact that he did neither means he had no idea what happened.

OK, time for me to eat crow.

At the beginning of the season, I said that IMHO this team would likely make the playoffs, but wouldn't do anything once they got there. I hope I get to eat crow about the qualifying clause there; but what I'm writing about now is when I rescinded that statement after (I think) our away match to RSL on September 1, when it seemed like we just rolled over, and said that we simply weren't good enough to make the playoffs at all. I hope I continue to be just as wrong.
