Marquez to Chivas (USA)? Once a Metro Let's hope it's the other Chivas. It seems from his stupid actions that he's not happy in MLS. Why would Chivas USA wants to bother with him away?.
It would probably have to be a similar deal as with JPA... in which NY takes the most of the salary hit...
I thought they told Robin Fraser at the start of the season, "Just Win"? Foisting a cancer like Rafa Marquez on that already shaky team would be terminal for the season. Plus--couldn't they find a young, talented Mexican attacker for $2.5M (half Rafa's salary) who would also help them win a little more? Domene did shoot it down--which means it better not happen. At this point in the Marquez MLS debacle, it's unspinnable.
The thing is, for this season, NYRB has been much, much better with him than without him. The sample size is too small to go crazy over...but man, they were awful against DC. Point being, I don't think acquiring him conflicts with "just win."
Oh, but wait. NYRB are 3-0-1 with him in the lineup this year.... Edit: I see Superdave got to the point but from the opposite angle. I just think the guy's a cancer and ultimately he'll drag whatever team he's on down in the gutter with him.
I don't buy it, not even they are that stupid. If it comes to pass though their new slogan should be Chivas USA where you can dump your unwanted DPs.
I don't know. I'd love it if for the 2nd year in a row NYRB gave up a high profile player & he did well for his new team.
I'd argue that the Marquez stat is misleading. The first 2 of those wins with Marquez in the lineup coincided with the return to the lineup of Wilman Conde, who I'd argue was the big difference with the team. Heck, Conde is the guy who Thierry Henry singled out as the guy who had made the big difference in the way the team played ... not Marquez. And finally, if the referee didn't have blinders on, Rafa indeed would have been called for a late penalty and would have been a significant reason for a LOSS to SJ instead of a tie. Marquez is a cancer in NY. Having said that, maybe he wouldn't be as bad if he got a change of scenery. The well is simply poisoned in NY for him, and everyone knows that.
Acquiring him means acquiring his disciplinary record, as well. And the cards and missed games. It's not like he's a 20-goal scorer or something. $2.5M is way too much to pay for that position, that attitude and those inevitable missed games and man-down situations--unless you think he becomes a model citizen all of a sudden.
I was hoping that Red Bull would go on a tear after he got suspended for piledriving Shea Salinas just to show how worthless he is, but then they went and stunk up the joint in RFK without him. Oh well. I can't feel too bad when Red Bull loses, regardless.
As for the DC game, we're talking about a situation where NY had to use their 4th string CB, 2nd string LB, and 3rd string holding midfielder, none of which had played more than 45 minutes in an MLS game. So yes, we are better with Marquez in the lineup than our 20 year old third string DM making his debut in the league, but that doesn't mean that he's a good option for Chivas, or NY for that matter considering his salary. As for the three games we won, that had more to do with Henry and Cooper hitting an incredible hot streak, which Marquez contributed little to. McCarty had more impressive stats offensively and defensively during that stretch than Marquez did... Even during that stretch we were still leaking goals, something that Marquez is supposed to help prevent. Chivas, or any other club in the world, would be batshit crazy to take this guy even at half his current salary (which was the split originally reported). His legs are shot and his attitude sucks, he spends more time pointing where other players should pass the ball than opening up to receive it himself.
This is NOT happening.. Especially with the Transfer Window of world soccer opening up soon... Although Marquez is and will go down in history as the biggest DP bust ever... 4.6 million for the name and nationality... Nothing else.... AVERAGE at best in MLS....
Well at least Rafa is the best at producing high level market quality earwax, and also don't forget he has his own men's cologne--available now in 4 different formulations (RM original, RM Black, RM Splash, and RM Capitan)
Dont forget "The Animal"--cant believe he actually played here for a while before going back to partying in Brazil.
