Dirty, cynical play that doesn't hold much weight without context, in my opinion. I appreciate that Touchline posted the entire video and will try to watch today if time permits, so that I can form my own opinion.

The Daily Show shows you every day how you can creatively edit someone's words to make them sound like an idiot (and certainly, in some cases, people do fine jobs of making themselves look like idiots without TV's help).

We've all played soccer here and understand the frustration that can come with a game. I think the few Lobo fans on here have observed enough games to know that these slow-mo, replayed (dirty and cynical) fouls are NOT the norm. I use my past experience with the (UNM) team & coaching staff to predict that this was not the one-sided "bully vs. helpless small child" affair that it is being made out to be.

No one - well, at least not me - is saying UNM plays dirty and cynical all the time. And there's certainly enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that they usually don't play that way.

At the same time, there's certainly a lot of anecdotal - not to mention video - evidence to suggest that YESTERDAY they committed several dirty, cynical fouls for which they are fortunate not to have gotten more than one player ejected.

Just because you haven't done something before doesn't mean you didn't do it yesterday. Just ask anyone who has raised kids!

I think New Mexico will not be as highly ranked when RPI comes out tomorrow.MPSF is not a very competitive conference and their RPI will suffer because of that.

watching the game now. 35 minutes in and it's just another soccer game. pretty even.

I was wondering why Levi Rossi (defender) was subbed out and it turns out he landed awkwardly on a header and looked to have tweaked his back

Seems to be a physical game, a little rougher on New Mexico's part, which I have a feeling was part of the strategy.

Clearly home-field advantage is in the favor of CSUB, just as it would be for UNM were the game held in Albq.

As CSUB fans, you all are pretty set that UNM played dirty. As a Lobos fan, I am enjoying the tenacity and think it lends itself (minus a couple frustration fouls) to competition on a larger stage (NCAAs), which the Lobos have their eyes set on this year. We're clearly not going to convince each other of anything and will have to agree to disagree. Looking forward to seeing you all again this season at a different venue to see if CSUB can still hold their own.

    Sandon, you are absolutely correct.

up to half time now. Baldinger (who eventually gets sent off in 2nd half) comes on and immediately scores a header off a corner.

completely innocuous first half including the first example given on the other video. Lawrence Robledo tracking back commits a foul from the side while attempting to tackle the ball. he was properly cautioned and respectfully stood and acknowledged it. nothing dirty or cynical about it

here in a bit I'll watch the second half where I'll see a second Lobo goal, 13 Lobo fouls, 5 yellow cards and hear an F-bomb

In his postgame interview, the NM coach expressed displeasure with some of his players--that's a start.

Even more luckily, the dangerous play evidently didn't permanently hurt any Runners. But that doesn't excuse anyone.

Just got to the F-bomb incident in the video. Begins around 1hr, 15 min in.

    Here's a breakdown:

CSUB turnover leads to UNM goal to make it 2-0.

Coach Fish is heard saying "be smart"

CSUB Assistant Keith Costigan says "what be smart and hold the ball as long as you can? maybe if you try to play..."(cut off by coach JF)

Coach: "Hey, don't talk to the players"
    Costigan: "I'm talking to you"
    Coach: "******** you"
    Costigan: "You want it?"

Then I believe the exchange turns between another person (backing UNM) and Costigan (?). The other person refers to Costigan as a "big celebrity, a tv guy."

    [Context: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Costigan]

Costigan responds and says "oh you watch me there?" and laughs with another person or two.

The game gets a bit more chippy immediately after UNM's second goal (67:36).
At 68:13, the Lobos make a defensive stop and clear the ball.
#16 on CSUB gets up off the ground and gets in the face of the Lobo defender (Rossi?). They clearly exchange words and the CSUB player delivers a soft headbutt to the UNM defender. Then the referee takes notice and delivers yellow cards to both players involved in the altercation.

Just seconds later, (68:26) Baldinger of UNM retaliates by tripping a CSUB player away from the ball, and is rightfully sent off after receiving his second yellow.

Ok, clear to me now that the altercation was between Costigan and Fish. They both come out of the situation sounding arrogant. Costigan just as much as anyone else.

Touchline, in your video, how about editing the pretty white font so it indicates that it is the words of UNM Head Coach JF AND CSUB Assistant Keith Costigan? Or would that derail your objective of portraying these UNM kids and coaches as the bullies you seem to consider them?

so here's the cool thing for me. if it wasn't for the "Class" video I don't think I would have been able to watch the entire match, so, win. only had a bit of work to do today anyway.

Freshman James Rogers' (#7) jumping foul in the 73rd was bad. His job, a man down, is to put full pressure up front but that was pretty boneheaded. If he had made contact with his studs he'd have been sent off straight away. He was immediately subbed off for remainder of the match

Thanks again for the video, moving on

Well said, put the CSUB coach's name on the video as well if you don't want to sound like a whining baby. This was just an attempt by a fan that couldn't take losing. I don't condone some of the tackles on UNM's part but JF subbed guys off and apologizes after the game in an interview on behalf of his team. Im on the same page as you unnamedsource!

I agree with Sandon's sentiments here.

However I will say that I saw the CP/NM game early this season in person and don't remember anything like these very late, bad fouls shown on this video. But ALSO some of these fouls in this video by NM were NOT going for the ball, but just harassment fouls occurring off the ball ... that's inexcusable.

NM did outfoul CP 17-13 in the 0-0 double OT game but only had 3 shots for the entire game, vs. 17 shots for CP. Too bad CP didn't beat the Lobos that day :).

Good for you guys but no way would I rank you #1 ... I'd have you #5 behind 1-4 (seen all those teams at least online or on tv), but you are undefeated so that's why you've got the ranking. At least you'll probably get to play at home to start.

    This is about right:

"I'd say we're one of the top 10 or 15 teams," Fishbein said. "Hopefully, we'll get a chance to play a few of the others in the NCAAs and find out how we really stack up."

    In Albuquerque Journal (subscription)

Soccer America says #4 (College Soccer News #2) NSCAA out today as well as the new RPI (right?).

That seems fair, based on strength of schedule.

If they seed based on the RPI, UNM would have a first round bye and play at home till the quarterfinals.

If they stay undefeated and a few of the teams ahead of them take more losses, I can see them squeaking into the coveted Top Four, which would keep them at home for the QF as well.

LMU and Santa Clara were supposed to be quality wins this year but instead they are 126 & 130, respectively. It's the way it goes sometimes

How they can be ranked behind James Madison AND Old Dominion is a real mystery to me. Actually how those two schools can be ranked 6 and 7 is the real mystery.

It's just math Bisbee. I submit that it is better than media & coaches' polls (although those are fun) and works out in the end. Just my $0.02

    Yup.

Think of the schools that scheduled Michigan this year. Last season the Final Four, this year 129! For schools like San Diego State and Akron, which scheduled them expecting an RPI boost, that hurts. And to get this on thread, since UNM played Akron, that impacts the Lobos, too.

Of course, for every bad team there's a good team so some teams get an RPI boon when a team not expected to be strong suddenly blows up and has a higher than expected RPI.

In a perfect world, it's a zero-sum kinda deal but we all know we don't live in said perfect world.
