Huskies travel to Morgantown and their undefeated season came to an end, falling 2-0 to the Mountaineers. The wonderfully-named Shadow Sebele had a goal and an assist.
and all Akron needed to do was beat a poor Michigan team oh,well the strange season marches on with no real dominating team esp if UNC takes care of business on Friday
Marlon continues to have Reid's number. Probably a good thing for the Huskies to not have to deal with the pressure of being undefeated heading towards postseason play. Lord knows Reid puts enough pressure on the players. That said, I still think the Huskies will come up short of Birmingham.
aaaand 3 of the Top 5 teams go down in a matter of 2 days (College Soccer Scoreboard) Not to mention Wake Forest losing to a 4-8-1 Elon squad. With UConn going down...is it a stretch to say New Mexico is the best team in the country?
Best record, yes, best team....not buying it at this point. The schedule isn't very impressive, and while the tie against Akron, at Akron, is a very good result, the reality is they were up a man for the vast majority of the game. Not saying they arent quality and cant make a college cup, but I wouldnt say just cuz theyre the last team to be undefeated, that theyre the best team.
The thing that is rarely talked about is that these schedules are made/confirmed 2,3,4 years in advance...
In a word, yes. Sure, New Mexico hit the road and earned draws with Cal Poly (unimpressive at 6-5-2) and Akron, but the rest of their schedule leaves a lot to be desired. Non-conference matchups with teams like Columbia and Syracuse don't typically boost a team's profile. New Mexico's #9 RPI rating definitely reflects this. Based on results and what we know alone, my top ten as it stands now is: 1. Maryland 2. UConn 3. New Mexico 4. North Carolina 5. Creighton 6. Akron 7. UC Irvine 8. South Florida 9. UCLA 10. Charlotte Even if New Mexico were to finish the season undefeated as the MPSF champion, there's a possibility that their RPI would hurt them enough to miss out on a top four seed.
One thing I think it's safe to say this season. Last year's top 5 teams (at the end of the season) were better than this group (current top 5..for now). From the Maryland perspective, I still have last year's Maryland team a little better from a technically side (not to mention who was in goal) even though this year's team is faster and more athletic. Tman
Yeah, being the last undefeated team is a nice accomplishment, but there's no reason to think they're a class apart. This year, I don't see anyone that I'd put on a par with the outstanding Akron, Maryland, and Wake Forest teams from the past few years. I was expecting Louisville to be the one this year, but they may not even get a seed.
Yep and you try and do the best you can but without a crystal ball all bets are off except for the handfull of programs who are good year in and year out.
