It's not really a wake up call at all. This friendly is a leg loosener to us, and a chance to prove yourselves to you and prove yourselves you did. No-one should get bent out of shape about it, we both got what we needed from it. Second pre-season game, no reason to go all out when there's a high volume of games still to be played in Pre-season. That said, I'd not heard of your team prior to this, are you relatively new to the MLS?
I wrote MLSsoccer.com about this earlier today and here's the response I got: Thank you for your email. We are very proud of our Union team and covered the match last night. In addition, you can find the following article on our homepage: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/07/20/recap-union-down-everton-1-0-goal-17-year-old
This is our second year in existence and last year we were an expansion side that third from the bottom of the league standings. This year we lead our division and people still complain.
Just seen the league, there's a lot of well established teams in your division. Might become a closet supporter. Here's hoping you win the lot. Good luck!
Yet there are at least 3 articles about the Red Bulls on the front page, including a rehash of a previous article about the history of soccer in Harrison. You'd expect a team leading their conference that just beat an EPL team would get more press than a team barely hanging onto 2nd who have only won a single match in the last month+, against the worst team in the league....but that's MLS for ya.
Just found out from the team that, according to their merchandise guy, the Union-Everton scarf well has run completely dry and there are no plans to produce any more. So those of us who are commemorative scarf-less will either have to suck it up, OR maybe convince them to have a second run (if they can have Mondi's shirts for sale, anything's possible).
My thinking would be that things are "commemorative" for a reason, and it wouldn't make sense to do a second run for people who didn't think to make a go for one pre-match/open up sales for people who weren't even there, especially since this has happened to people in the past friendlies.
Agreed, but they could've learned from past friendlies (I guess just the Celtic one) what the possible demand for them would be. Regardless, it's good to know that the PPL Park opener scarves are still available, and at a discount too. http://www.philadelphiaunionstore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SA-RFN-UNIONSCA-PPL If I see someone parading around PPL with one on, I'll have to pull a IPFYI and take it from him/her.
My bet is they went big with those Union/Sounders scarves, got left with a HUGE surplus, and so for subsequent special scarves undercut the demand. Perhaps there weren't enough emails complaining about lack of Celtic scarves last year, and so they kept the same order size for this year. Get a mass e-mail going and perhaps in the future we'll see more availability. until then, I'm getting in the gate at least 45 minutes before kick and jumping straight in line for them like i've been doing
It was pretty bad, but I only suffered through a glimpse of it because I was staying at a hotel near the stadium. I didn't even know those teams were playing...
As someone who sits there, almost every row (except for a few) in my section are corporate owned and are very rarely used by the same person twice. The row behind me is owned by Widener, and every game except for the LA Galaxy, it's never had a person in it. I think this is why the sections are mostly empty is because company's give out tickets to employees but chose not to go. For anyone who forgot to record the game and wants to watch it, it's on CSN right now.
Gotta admit, I am loving Zumoff as the main play-by-play guy. Granted, I'm a Sixers fan, but it's great to hear him do a Union game. Just a natural announcer with real excitement for Philly teams. No offense to the Brits, but it's nice to hear a professional American announcer do a soccer game.
That's what I thought it might be. Oh well, just a shame really, some of the best seats in the house going to waste. Haha personally I can't imagine getting club seats for free and choosing not to go .
Couldn't agree more. I hope Mark does some more matches for us, and if the NBA can't get a CBA, I wouldn't mind him and JP trading games
I really enjoyed him too. He has a passion as an announcer and loves all things Philly. He even gave his patented Yes!!!! call when we scored and made the goal that much better. I wouldn't mind him doing almost every game too since he doesn't seem to mind traveling as he is at almost every sixers road game. He also seemed very knowledgeable about the team and soccer in general (since he's a STH) but it was nice to listen to and he made Bob Rigby seem enjoyable to listen to
YESSS! Zumoff was really good. I wonder if that performance has the CSN mgmt thinking about a change. I thought the local perspective was good. Let's admit it ... JP is a carpetbagger!! Same with Taylor Twellman, I could feel him rooting for NE in the last league game.
Like an embarrassed parent..instead of like a Philly fan. I don't really like his style so I guess I am trying to find any excuse to be rid of him.
zoom did a decent job, had a fair working knowledge of the players, knows the game well enough to anticipate.. the old hockey annoucer gene hart was a great soccer broadcaster, helped that he was a huge soccer fan back in the day
Always liked Everton, classy team who always do well with lower finances than the "top 4". Good luck to you in the PL this coming season as well.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch the game on Wednesday night from northern VA, but I followed as best I could on Twitter. Skimming through the past 10 pages or so, I didn't see much about MacMath. If I understand correctly, he started the match and was replaced by Thorne Holder at half. How did Zac fare? Obviously there wasn't a goal against him, but did he show anything special, or was he simply not challenged at all in that half?
