When countries implement this new ratings system for out of home audience, tv ratings for sporting events will go through the roof.

Its laughable to believe that just 1 in 3 Americans watch the Superbowl just as it was laughable in England that just 1 in 3 people watched the game against Germany.

The new ratings boost may mean more sport on tv and less junk tv such as these reality tv shows.

I agree..just out during the 2nd quarter of the superbowl..it is like ghost America.

I won't be surprised if the total viewers is near 240-250 mil

The real purpose of ratings data is to sell advertising. I've always assumed that the lack of out-of-home data stems from the fact that commercials are largely overlooked anyway in noisy, large-crowd situations. Why bother counting eyeballs that are irrelevant to the thing you're trying to measure?

I could be completely wrong; it's just what I've always figured.

The old ratings system isn't that inaccurate. It might add at most another couple of million.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Sportsfan1's point is that they don't measure out-of-home audience at all in the first place -- not that their attempts are inaccurate.

The ratings system does exactly what it purports to do: measure household viewing. It doesn't claim, "This is the total viewing audience." It merely claims, "This is the audience that is watching at home."

While I doubt the total Super Bowl audience is 250 million, Sportsfan1 is certainly right that the household ratings figures aren't nearly an accurate reflection of total audience. Shoot, ESPN just announced that its World Cup Final viewership was probably 17% higher than the household ratings alone, and I suspect it's at least similar for the Super Bowl.

A reach of about 900 million people, and average in-home global audience of 530 million viewers.

I wonder how they can accurately measure it in India.

I have seen entire villages stealing the TV signal from a main cable source, and then the entire village watching the game on one rigged up TV.

I have seen armies of homeless people or poor people who can't afford TVs camping out on the sidewalk outside electronics stores and watching the game on the TV in the display windows.

That link is the best I can do. Around 900 million worldwide for the final, similar to last time. I'm surprised that "only" 19.3 million on average and 20.8 million peak watched in France. Although I do wonder how they account for people watching big screens.

Good figures from China. Worth reading the article.
