This thread is always so confusing. Freddy needs to find a club and stick with it. It really shouldn't matter where at this point. If a mls team will take him, he should go there. Him playing the waiting game is not helping at all. He isn't playing so his form is dipping so when he goes on trial at a club, he isn't 100%. Just swallow up your pride and go to the mls and prove everyone wrong. Donovan did it, and look at him now. He is considered a great player all around the world.

In retrospect, their timing was impeccable - right after his very successful U-20.

Portugal is 6th best Euro league and there's a big difference between Benfica, a perennial Champions League team, and clubs like Belenenses, Aris and Randers is pretty large.

    That's a really cheap contract.

He did ok in a substitute roll. You're kidding yourself if you think off-the-field issues are the main problem. If he was such a game changer/dynamic force any coach would find a way to "fix" the off field issues. He ain't good enough right now.

Maybe they tried to fix the issues by benching him?

We've already been through more variations on the "Freddy didn't play because he's no good/no there's more to it than that" theme than the total number of minutes Freddy's been on the pitch in Europe. Anyone interested in the topic can re-read the old Freddy threads. We're not going to take this one through it again.

And post limits in Freddy threads are still in effect.

What post limits were ever in effect? I just remember one comment DK said was a joke, and then people enthusiastically numbering their posts for some reason.

Adu's best MLS fit is in Philly

Part of the author's argument is that Nowak is familiar with Adu from the DC United days, but not sure that is a good thing in this case.

No, mainly movie reviews on FB. Continued tweets by Brazilians repeating the America MG rumors, though.

You could make the argument that Nowak has been one of the few coaches that's actually shown they gave a damn about Freddy's career. Freddy and Nowak butted heads in DC........but that's because Freddy thought he was a rock star, and Piotr wanted to take a more conservative approach to his development. Later on, with the 08 Olympic team...........there didn't seem to be any problems between the two.

I was thinking the same thing. The Olympics seem to be a good tournament for Adu. As Philadelphia Union fan, I would be happy to watch Adu play every week. Only problem is that the Union are fine selling lots of tickets right now. So there won't be an incentive for the Management of the Union to bring him in. That being said, they seem to like Nowak and give him a lot of leeway with his choices.

This assumes that the only reason to bring him to the Union (or anywhere in MLS) would be to sell tickets and jerseys. But isn't the real question -- and the one that none of us really know the answer to -- can the guy play?

If he can start in MLS then he should get his ass back to the States, show he's grown up and has game. If he excels then he'll still have options that will include Europe again.

And if he or his people think he can't cut it, then he should keep doing what he's doing -- soaking that Benfica contract for every nickel even if he doesn't play anywhere. And he should save his $.

havent been paying much attention, whens his contract up, the end of 2012?? He may have a loan or two in scandanavia if he rides out his contract and comes home. For instance, Orebo sell Bedoya, they could bring him in. And i do recall seeing Randers earlier and that caused alot of controversy on the Aris side.

Well, for Adu's sake, start paying attention!

Good question, though. When is Adu's contract up?

He and Letoux would be an interesting combo, because Seb works his ass off for 90 minutes. Pairing those two, it would be OK if Freddy laid back and picked his spots.

But if Mwanga beats out Freddy for that 2nd primary attacker role, then Freddy has to play midfield, and you have to wonder if that would work in today's MLS.

And they already have Mapp to play on the left side of midfield. (where Freddy played for Aris) While Mapp isn't the second coming of Ribery, he's a good MLS winger.

And I'm a big fan of Roger Torres in the center of midfield.

I guess it just comes down to price for all of these MLS club. If Freddy is available for a relatively cheap price, there would be many clubs interested.

    Youth tourneys don't count.

To say that Adu has more of that 'special' quality than Dempsey or Donovan is laughable. Have you seen Dempsey in the EPL? Or Donovan on loan last year?

Would love to see Adu come back to the MLS.

Kid needs game time regardless of whatever any of us thinks he did yesterday or 5 years ago.

Or recently, Holden. He's got the attention of the English commentators for a reason.

My only kool-aide comes from watching the world's greatest players over the years.

Of course I've seen Dempsey, and I didn't miss a game of Donovan's loan. They're fantastic players for Americans, but they don't even come close to the truly special players.

The first great US player is going to need to have a bit of Freddy's stuff. If Dempsey, Donovan, or Holden had more Freddy in them, they would have more of a shot.

Freddy was signed by the biggest club to ever sign an American attacking player. It didn't work out, but that speaks for itself.

    Well, that's arguable.
What I will agree with is that Freddy has some qualities in his game, in terms of his skill with the ball, that the more stereotypical American players do not have.
Sadly for Freddy, he doesn't have the reputation for having the stereotypically American qualities that foreign managers like: a strong team focus, three lungs, amazing levels of fitness, lack of grousing, etc.

I'm not saying Adu is a crap player, but it should be pointed out that big clubs sign crap players all the time. They also sign crap players that go on to have a professional career amounting to nothing.

Anyway, here's hoping Adu makes it somewhere. There is still time for him to get it figured out.
