pretty much. Uruguay is very good. it's funny how much the American fans are underestimating them...as if they are a better option than Germany or Argentina. to be honest, i think uruguay is better than those teams, at least from what i've seen. balance and pragmatism, wins out. with a legitimate matador up front. thread for reference -- https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1470261
I certainly admire Uruguai more than Argentina, but that's mainly because Forlan is my favorite "classic" striker in the world. They do have a stable defense ( Lugano and Godin form a nice combination, they are both very strong too), They have Forlan and Luis Suarez in the attack, one of the best attacks in the competition IMO.... I just think that they don't excell at the goalie position and at the creative midfielder position... But Forlan is so awesome and orgasm-inducing that he is helping the team with creativeness, as well as scoring his goals.... The Midfield is very gritty and strong so defensively they are sound.
I would still fear Germany or Argentina more than Uruguay. Uruguay is a good team, but they don't have the potential to play the way Germany and Argentina do.
Based on what I've seen so far, I think our biggest threats are Argentina, Holland, and Germany, in that order.
While I'd give Uruguay a slight edge I'd put the teams a lot closer than you guys have above. I definitely think they have the best form over the last two games, Ghana looked much better in their first game (don't let their boringness fool you - they are capable of dominating, they just need more experience and that's where Uruguay have an edge over all 3 other teams, the intangibles of experience and raça).
it's really hard to rank them for me. i know we talk about this every world cup -- so much that's almost cliche, but it's quite open. traditional powers like italy and england are struggling -- and frankly, don't look to threaten too much. england may be the exception of the 2 if capello keeps the line-up from today. germany is so young and their forwards are a complete mess. big names. iffy performances. but their midfield is just very intriguing. and their defense has faired better than expected. their defense is also a bit shaky, but they have lahm, who saved them on several occasions today. argentina -- well, ive said it here before. but the combination of a very ordinary defense and goalie...and inconsistent finishing has me doubting them. they've been lucky, but a large part of this tournament is the luck factor. holland is the great unknown because they havent even come close to realizing their potential. to me, they are very similar to argentina. similar weaknesses and strengths. but the caveat is that they have been without their best player in robben. on the other hand, holland have a lot of internal issues -- not as bad as france obviously, but i believe van der vaart and sneijder do not talk to each other. it kinda sucks that we'll likely have to face the dutch, unless paraguay implodes and gets 2nd. in that event, i think they can take on holland. but i can't see paraguay losing their group.
I just don't fear Argentina at all. Maybe, it because our recent dominace over them or there leaky defense. I actually don't fear any team so far. Anything can happen on any given day but I think we matchup pretty well against the better sides. On the contrary. I think Uruguay and Switzerland would give up trouble.
I feel the same way... Kinda hard to explain, it may even be overconfidence, but with this Brasil team I'm not fearing anyone. Not before the game at least.
Germany in 2002 weren't playing the greatest football either. But they were efficient and put up a valiant fight in the final. We'll see, of course, but I think this German team has an edge on that one in terms of talent, and it may grow during the competition. Holland didn't have the best games in its group, but at times they looked fast, efficient and dangerous. There's a lot of talent there. And they'll be wanting revenge. Though I give us an edge, it would be a hard game. Argentina is Argentina. Could implode, could set the World Cup alight. And though their defense is questionable, though they haven't been super efficient in front of goal, and though they have not had the best results against us recently, a BRA-ARG in a WC final would have absolutely no favorite. I don't know if I'd even be able to watch the game.
Well, Italy's out. And they finished below New Zealand. To be fair they played their asses off... for 20 minutes out of 270.
Looking back at the history of International football, and the greats of the game, I never thought in a million years I`d ever be alive to utter the words: ``Brazil`s defence is light years ahead of Italy`s``.
I have been telling my friends that I am very happy that Italy lost, because of a significant statistic: Italy will keep 4 stars, and Brasil keeps 5, possibly 6 by the end of this world cup! If Germany wins this wc, they will have 4 stars.... Therefore, our 5 stars (maybe 6 after this?) will remain for at least another 4 years!!!!!
Atleast, Italy went down fighting unlike France. They never put there head down; they kept believing till the final whistle. If we are to go out; I want to go out fighting to the last minute. Leave it all on the pitch.
Watching Group H now and Chile's keeper just made a stupid mistake. 1x0 Spain. Anyways, as I was going to say before the keeper gifted Villa a goal: If Spain win and Switzerland x Honduras tie, we face Chile If Chile wins, chances are we face Switzerland unless Honduras pulls the upset. If Spain and Switzerland win it depends on goals scored/ goal difference. Chile have actually kept Spain from passing the ball crisply so far, but this gifted goal may change things. Actually, more like they've kept Spain from keeping possession but when Spain have the ball Chile have been caught in trouble and fouling a few times.
Chile goes down 2x0 on a nice goal by Iniesta as Spain goes wide with Torres. Then Chile loses a player to a second yellow but it looks like an accident and not a foul.
