Baseball doesn't seem to being doing too bad with a 39-year-old MVP. And how old are you? Preki is 40 and can outplay most of his juniors in the MLS. I wish I was in such good shape. It's not about age. It's about ability. Etcheverry is 33 and plays like he's 50. Stoitchkov is 37 and plays like he's 45.
Teddy Sheringham won England's Pro footballer of the year award in 2000/2001 at age 35 and is still going strong. What's that say about the Premiership?
Given that 39 year old Barry Bonds just won MVP in a less physical, but vastly more established sport, I'm not too worried about the "effect" of Preki winning...
a 40 year old MVP and a 14 year old rookie. that's not a bad contrast there imo. Preki is the man, athletes are playing at high levels at older and older age's now. It's all about the quality of conditioning.
The correct answer is: Richard Mulroony was the MVP. Armas was a close second. But I guess statistically Preki had a great season. Ho-hum.
Let me be angered a little longer... okay I'm done. Not that Preki won, but that there are people out there (including Wynalda) that MLS can't be taken seriously with a 40-year-old MVP. Well guess what guys, bite me. Preki earned it. And if that shows that our league has some developing to do, who effing cares. I think I'd be more worried about our league being credible if the League had said, "You know what... Preki is too old to be an MVP, despite how good he did..." Might I also point out Gianfranco Zola was 38 and about to be re-signed by Chelsea? And I can't remember the name of the defender or the team (sorry, I sound like an idiot), but there was a 36 year old Defender who came back to an Italian team and led them quite a ways if I remember correctly (in League and Champions League). And if Adu were to win BWS title next year? Would our league be less credible because a 15 year old won it? Praise to Preki and his deserved title. If I were him, I'd retire on top. Instead, he's going to go another year and I forsee him not doing too hot next year and retiring. (Winning the MVP a year after he started in MLS and a year before he retired... I love symmetry.)
I thought that Preki was the best choice, Chicago just had too many other weapons for Razov to be MVP, and I thought that Chung was MVP of the Rapids, not Spencer. Oh well congrats to ya old man.
