I am going to go out on a limb now and say that despite my anguish and sense of injustice at the red card and the rossi goals, I felt like we played very well. I was impressed. When we were 11-11, the game looked even. I am not sure what the announcers were saying since I watched in a bar with the volume down. I was impressed with Spector, Demerit, Jozy, MB and Donovan. Clint played pretty well as well. Benny, ok.

Gooch was very good. I know we match up very well with Italy and think we punched well above our weight. We were down a man for over an hour. We scored down a man, which is always impressive. They are Italy, one of the five best soccer powers in the world. I think the scoreline does not reflect the game. It hurts, but I think we played better down a man than we did in 2006 until the end. We didnt just sit back deep in our own half and wait. We did take risks.

And that's why most US sports fans don't like the game. As soon as the red came out, i said here we go again. It's early in the game. Give the dude a yellow, call the elbow against Donovan and maybe you don't call the penalty for Donovan but i'll be damned if Ghana didn't get one in 06 for a less convincing foul in the box.

The only thing more dissapointing than losing this game is to read the retarded posts in this thread.

We played very well down a man against Italy. They scored 3 very good goals, and guess what? In a game, that can happen! But let's throw everyone under the bus because of it.

I'm proud of this team and the effort they put in today.

    Next!

Brazil is still a lot better than Italy, though

He was getting instructions from Bob when the second was scored. Bob still put him in.

I tend to agree with this. Normally I'd be pissed but honestly they are better than us in every position and we were down a man, what does anyone expect? We're not going to win against Brazil, most likely won't beat Egypt and we're not going to do well in 2010. With that said they put up a good showing, certainly better than most of us expected, so we may as well be happy with that.

    That is clueless Pat Fan.

I would say not a bad game.

We were gassed at the end. Clark call was not a red. Donovan no call in box. Timmy played great and saved two goals. About what I expect when you play the world champs 10 vs. 11. We were TIRED ole boys out there. We can play with Italy; just need a bit more luck and another body in the central midfield. Feel really bad for Rico. He was robbed of an opportunity.

I seriously despise Rossi now, but am over it. Not gonna talk about it anymore.

Look, before the game, I expected us to lose. But when the team gives up three after going one up, something is definitely wrong. Even down a man. First of all, Italy should have been dead and gone by half-time, down 3-0. Once we were a goal up and a man down, that's when Bob has to assert control and adjust the team to shut the doors. Then, when we're chasing thing game, to leave on ineffective players like Dempsey and Benny while taking off Jozy, who was terrorizing the Italian backline, just beggards belief. As long as Bob is going to go for the draw, it's got to be Freddy and no DMB or Sacha.

Brazil is going to be a tougher game and Egypt looked very strong this afternoon. This was, oddly, our best chance to put points on the board.

Bob bottled it. Lippi won this staring contest.

I'm replying without having read anyone else's analysis, for now.

Except for the red card, and the uncalled penalty on Donovan getting jumped in the box, I feel roughly as good as I can imagine feeling about a 3-1 loss.

We were down to 10 men against the team that won the World Cup in 2006. Give me a break.

Agree what happened to that unspoken rule of not rubbing it in? Completely classless even with the emotions. It's obvious he wanted to get back at people for calling him what he is. Certainly doens't endear himself to anyone stateside.

Sad thing is I reckon a majority of Italians in New Jersey support Italy over the US.

bs ... that is not a red anywhere in the world .... if that was a red - why was the handball in the Egypt or Brazil game not a red.

no I think we seriously have a case of bias here ... probably because we have to protect star players with big salaries.

This midfield just doesn't seem to be built to service our strikers:(

I have an evening class in about an hour. God help any poor bastardsunlucky enough to be wearing an Italy jersey on campus. I feel a felonious assault brewing.

why am I so upset about a rather meaningless game?

I hope BB doesn't screw Torres. He is a solid holding midfield that is a starter with Pachuca. Plays extremely well and doesn't get any playing time while others do? Hmm, I just dont know.

They should have scored 10 or did you not see Timmy standing on his head?
They didn't play very well and were manhandled in the second half and completely run over.

That's reality folks and the losing mentalitiy on this board is sickening!

i just wish he had not celebrated his goals so fervently, coming against the team from the nation where he was born and raised for most of his life..... But hey, those who say he may be among the top 2-3 second strikers in the world might be on to something.... Fantastic player....

Bob does have a fascination with late and loyalty (Beasley, Sacha) subs, no?

Loser talk, the Mexico forum is over there somewhere.

    <--------------

After the 1st goal, the US looked shellshocked. They did almost nothing of note and gave Italy all the space and time in world. Bradley couldn't snap them out of it or even adjust and answer Lippi's changes.

no, that's not how Americans try to play and they suffer for it. it's why our passers stuggle to get starts in the center of the pitch. It's their job to unlock and ask questions of defense and play in Altidore. mOst of the time they just make him post up. that's not dangerous.
