how much is ATL paying Guzan to come back? I remember reading he was making like $1.2 million annually for AV. Not sure how much less he's making currently at MB but I can't imagine Atl are paying him a million. Just not worth it to them.

He doesn't get spun like a top by players so he has that going for him.

I always admired their partnership and the acknowledgement that Guzan offered Friedel, after Friedel left to go to Spurs. Things often do not end up quite like this . .

Brad Guzan gives credit to Brad Friedel

    http://www.espnfc.com/story/1183394/brad-guzan-hails-countryman-brad-friedel-as-ideal-mentor

"But we had a really good working relationship. For me as a young goalkeeper coming to this country, working with a goalkeeper who has been in the game and in this country for so long, it really helped me.

"He was the ideal mentor. He's going to be a mentor for anybody, the fact that he's a bit older than most, and the fact that he's in his 40s, he's done what he's done for so long. He's been around the block. For me to be able to pick his brain, it was good.

Pretty nice to hear as I'm sure there were some thoughts back at AV of "that old man is holding back my career"

IIRC, the signing with Middlesborough pretty much came as a surprise, out of the blue, when we were wondering what might happen. Middlesborough actually had signed Victor Valdes and also had the goalkeeper who was with them for promotion, Dimi Konstantopoulos.

There was no other news until this.

Anyway, here is Guzan's second biggest fan . . .

The club played 3 games in 6 days and yet Valdes started all 3. You'd think the manager might rest him for 1.

They have 7 more games left

Baffling - why did he get the start today? Virtual must-win, haven't read that Valdes has a knock or anything?

'42 - Freekick straight on from 25 yards out by Alexis Sanchez and Guzan is rooted to the spot.

    1 - 0 Arsenal

I've seen Sanchez do that to so many keepers, can't blame Guzan.

'50 1 -1 via a nice goal from Alvaro Negredo ... whipping cross in from the right in the air and Negredo meets it at the top of the six with an extended foot

His positioning was pretty bad. The ball was hit well, but it wasn't that far into the corner.

His positioning was bad. The ball was hit well, but it wasn't that far into the corner and he didn't even dive.

Some of my favorite soccer to watch is often played by the teams trying to avoid relegation at the end of the season... the sense of urgency and the give it your all style is fun to watch.

'70 2-1 Arsenal a ball is played into the middle of the box and it is chested down to Ozil about 8 yards out who smashes it near post on Guzan... not much Guzan could do.

    True, the other points are:

    1. The goalkeeper has to have his eyes completely on the ball and the player taking the kick. Sight on the ball and it's striker are critical. This was missing.

    2. This is different than a penalty because of the distance. The kicker can't really bend his knee in one direction to trick the goalkeeper. This is why the line of sight is absolutely critical.

    3. Guzan didn't have a good line of sight on the kick. That is on him. That said, superb finish by Alex Sanchez. A difficult save under the best of circumstances. Impossible, not having it in his vision the entire way.
