I have a Lee Trevino autograph from the 1970s. My wife, for her part, has a picture of her sitting next to Arnold Palmer on a stage, and another pic of her giving him his honorary degree. No autograph, though.

It's adorable that you think Cascarino, of all people, is above that sort of thing.

I do think that, and how adorable you find it is neither here nor there.

< For everyone else that might read this post, since Timon isn't known for replying to the intent/meat of a post> I've actually watched him change over the decade or so I've been paying attention. No, I don't think he's ever been deliberately racist, and this is the first time I've seen anything from him that I felt the need to call him out on.

What he said there didn't originate with him, and I know he doesn't really comprehend what he's said. That's what gritty can do to a brain.

Back in the day the Texas country club types would pile the hotshot 18 year old into the cadillac and take him on the drunken Best-Little-Whorehouse tour. they would stop at their rivals clubs and bet their local hotshot vs. the local local hotshot. One year the traveling local hotshot was Raymond Floyd. When they got to Dallas CC they asked who the local local hotshot they would be playing. Then the gambeling started. "Well, say the DCC guys. We aint got much this year. Gonna have to give us odds. Youre playing the valet kid from the parking lot." "Y'all mean that skinny little Mexican kid?? Sheeeeeit." Turns out that parking lot kid was Lee Trevino.

One of the stories I learned in the golf business in the 80's. I ALWAYS rooted for Trevino against the CC crowd which Nicklaus epitomized.

Didn't know it was. Was an old Howard Stern-Robin thing that I assumed came from the black community.

I've heard it at various times of my life and I've never known it to have racist overtones.

As I understand it, it's part and parcel of the idea that while Whites can evolve, all Black people are the same regardless of their tastes or experiences. Those who don't fit into every nook and cranny of the mold created for us by Whites get called biggie by our own. It originated from White ideaa about us, but Done right, Whites don't have to lift a finger to hold us down in that regard today. We're more than happy to do it ro each other.

Racism affects this like it affects everything else in America but this arises also from class divisions which exist in America and even in black America despite the American mythology that classes don't exist.

I knew what you meant. After posting on a phone a few times I'm much less critical of spelling errors.

Class divisions do exist in America, and they're supposed to exist within the Black community as well. You see them pop up when (example) you try to talk soccer or jazz to the typical Black American. It's not about money- I can assure you, I don't have a lot of that. All those people have to do is get off rheir own asses culturally instead of slinging "bougie" around as a weapon to keep us all the same.

High falutin' may be another way of saying it.

Not sure why Oakland didn't have one, but Vegas is supposed to:

There are more negative overtones to the use of the term like Auriaprottu is stating and also like language and slang in general I'm sure it has slightly different meanings depending on where you are.
I've rarely heard it in the Washington area but I've it a bit more in the Baltimore area.

I was very young when ww lived in the DC Metro area (Montg co., early-mid 70s), but my folks used to talk about stuff like this and I'd listen.
