I've actually got several Tolstoy novels I want to start soon, they're just so friggin' huge. No, I haven't read any Dickens, and I've read plenty of Greek philosophers (both ancient & modern), I just haven't gotten around to putting them up yet. It is a "work in progress" after all :p

Sounds like you are a big reader then.

I'm posting here because you said (on skipshady's board) you are virtually the only one who does here, so I decided to help out :)

it is quite interesting. he was one messed up dude. he was the son of a preacher that eventually got into polygamy, sorcery, drugs & magic and stuff like that. i find his music fascinating but i think he would've been a difficult person to be around.

I'm actually working on Inferno, but haven't finished it yet...so it hasn't made the "books I've read list." plus like I said, that list is a work in progress. I've ready many many more books in my life.

cool, the more i read that book, the more i discover what a nutter that guy was. married 27 women in a communal wedding. i can barely handle one, much less 27! that's just the tip of the iceberg though, he was really crazy. my favorte though is when he started referring to himself as "Double Fela" because he felt his music had come twice as far from where it started!

yeah, it spends a lot of time on that. he had three attempts at running for president of nigeria. the election commission always found one reason or another to disqualify him though. he also was arrested over 100 times and spent several years in jail. longest time actually spent was 18 months straight. if they don't have the book, let me know and i will mail it to you when i'm done.

I see you've read Hornby's How To Be Good. Did you enjoy it?

I wanted to like it, especially after reading About A Boy but it just didn't do anything for me. The main character seemed to be the female version of all Hornby protagonist - except she was neither all that likeable or over the top self consumed.

It wasn't the best book I ever read, but there were parts of it I enjoyed. I enjoyed it more as a point of philosophical departure rather than a piece of entertainment. "How to be good" is such a huge topic. DJ Goodnews is just downright annoying as is her husband after a while. She's not much better though. I thought there was too much ambivalence for it to really make a strong impression on me. Perhaps that's what he was going for, but I've certainly enjoyed his other books more.

Don't you hate it when you come across some super huge error in a book? I'm about 20 pages from being finished with the Fela book and what do I read but, "The Nigerian government was riding a wave of public euphoria after the Golden Eagles won the World Cup in 1996."

This book was written by a professor at Yale, don't you think they'd have a fact checker comb over that book? It's just about ruined the book for me. I got to thinking, well what about all the crap in here that I don't know whether it's true or not. That type of thing just really makes a book so suspect to me. Two factual errors in the same sentence!

I agree. I didn't enjoy the story but it did get me thinking about the subject.
Ugh, Goodnews. I suppose he was supposed to be some quirky loveable goof. Didn't work at all.
Not trying to be sarcastic at all, but I did enjoy the very last page where the family was fixing something or other in the rain. I can't remember what exactly it was about, but I do remember thinking "Ok, I guess this makes sense."

I thought it was okay, but largely forgettable as a whole (I didn't even remember the ending you mentioned.) Definately not one I'm recommending to others. I'm glad I didn't buy it either, I borrowed it from my brother, pvan4.

There was a lot of stuff that I didn't like about this book, but thayt character just sent it over the top for me. I haven't reccomended that book to anyone, and I am glad that I wasworking at Borders where you could check-out books when it came out. If I bought it I woulda been even more frustrated.

I've decided that I could never work at a music store or a book store. My entire paycheck would be gone. I have a hard enough time not spending all my money on those two things without having to constantly surround myself with them. Or do you just get jaded and it isn't a big deal after a while? That's cool that they would let you check out books. How did that work?
