Sparta would be a good club to try out for, though I won't be presumptuous and say it's the only one. One nice thing about Sparta is they have multiple teams at every age (currently 5 at U-9) and they are grouped by ability, so your son would be on a team with other kids of similar skill. Some of the smaller clubs only have one team at each age, so you get a large spread of ability on that team....not always best for development.

I also like Sparta because of the quality of staff coaches and trainers they have - kind of a who's who of soccer in Utah.

Two things Sparta isn't: Cheap, and easy on your schedule. Sparta costs more than most other clubs, and the time committment is high. If you're down with that, you'll be happy at Sparta.

Thanks for your post, I just filled out the tryout form for Friday's tryouts for my son. He's currently in the Sandy Rec Program and he takes it a bit too seriously to be in the league anymore and is more athletic than the majority of the kids. He's really into soccer now (apparently I'm rubbing off on him). As a former player & coach, even though I can work with him on his individual skills, I know from experience that his development belongs in the hands of someone who isn't his dad. I will not to push him in any direction and I want him to play because he has a passion for it. I want a club that can nurture a kid who's very competitive and has boundless energy into a complete player.
