Joel Waterman from Cavalry will become the 1st CPL player sold to an MLS club, Montreal Impact. Actually thought this was hilarious...If this goes through, the #CanPL will have sold 1/3 the amount of players to MLS in one year that the @USLChampionship has in 12. https://t.co/0FViK9nk7f— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) January 14, 2020 There have been three player sales in total from USL to MLS. Sales. Not teams signing players in a free.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) January 14, 2020
They should change their practices. CPL are mostly on 1+1. And yes I still find unilateral options on contract not great practice in my opinion. Waterman sold for $100k, Piette for €60k and Kaye for $50k. Wondering how much Borges is worth
MLS teams have sold draft pick spots for (going by memory) $100 k in allocation money. A known player would presumably be worth more. Of course, if Piette was worth $60 000 euros, I don't see Borges being at his level.

Soon to be Segunda Divisíon, Espanyol? Yowza.. Granted, they've been in La Liga for virtually their entire life and seem to be on solid financial standings. At least it isn't worse? It could have been Rayo like what happened with NASL.
Why on earth would a European team want to own a North American lower league club? I don't understand what possible business case there is to do it.
2026, demographic, top 10 world economy, more kids play football than hockey, new league with start up cost as low as it gets...just a few
CPL WILL have an 8th team for 2020 according to this! And the club who's backing the bid is not Espanyol but bigger than them... Update: Ottawa in 2020 is now official. Confirmed. Done deal.Clarification: The La Liga club is not Espanyol. This is why I said “could be”. It’s much bigger. All is left now is the announcement which is expected to happen this week. #CanPL https://t.co/lkAHonXCxI— Thomas Nef (@ThomasNef) January 15, 2020
With guys like David and Davies, there's more eyes on Canada. The Belgium league is watching CPL closely for their next "David". The entry cost being very low but with a potential high return in the long term makes it attractive for foreign investors and bigger clubs.
Now safe to confirm as it's being reported by Sportsnet Atletico Madrid will be the money behind the the CPL Ottawa club #CanPL is coming to Ottawa, and a source in Spain tells me the team will be backed by La Liga club Atletico Madrid.— Dan Riccio (@danriccio_) January 16, 2020 As reported by @DanRiccio650, @atletienglish appears to be making a major investment into Canadian soccer as the new owners of Ottawa’s #CanPL team. A further vote of confidence for the young league.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) January 16, 2020
Joel Waterman becoming the first player from CPL to be exported - besides Didic and borges, I’m getting word that Attardo and Elijah Adekugbe could also be sold. As many as 5 in year one from what I know. Maybe there’s even more to these players. Exciting things ahead! #CanPL— Thomas Nef (@ThomasNef) January 16, 2020
Here's an article from the Ottawa Sun on possible expansion to Ottawa: https://ottawasun.com/sports/soccer...group-hoping-to-field-team-in-2020-cpl-season It mentions the possibility, discusses the need for speed if things are to go ahead for 2020, and also has a bit on how much the Fury spent over the years.
“We are focusing on doing this with a major European group; when and if the day comes, it’s their announcement to make, not mine,” said Hunt. “It’s not my place to make any announcement.” 🔴⚪️ #AúpaOttawa #CanPL https://t.co/XEXJaJps67— Arcadio Marcuzzi (@_marcuzzi) January 17, 2020 Jeff Hunt is the local frontman behind the proposed new Canadian Premier League franchise in Ottawa. Hunt is working to bring pro soccer to TD Place in 2020 with a major club from La Liga (all signs point to Atlético Madrid). Confirmed by the agency "It’s a new approach to international recruitment, which should benefit all the CPL clubs and improve the quality of play" - @CPLsoccer partner with #21stClub in a league-wide deal to source top international talent for the league's teams.https://t.co/tHuQjDkJai pic.twitter.com/AC79PfFPRi— Twenty First Group (@TwentyFirstGrp) January 20, 2020 Details The Canadian Premier League is partnering up with @21stClub to recruit young international players who are interested in plying their trade in Canada#CanPL l 📝: @JohnMolinaro https://t.co/Ikyc5wZhBa— Canadian Premier League (@CPLsoccer) January 20, 2020 to scout young internationals (age 23 and under) from around the world. The goal is to create a database of internationals, with the aim of placing players from it with CPL clubs. The database of internationals will be fluid over the course of 2020, as new players will be added and signed to pre-contracts before being made available to all CPL clubs simultaneously. Teams will have to compete with one another over players, and sign them on a first come first serve basis.
