The difference between M and F hiring responses is interesting. Tufts getting Harvard would bring out the trolls on the women's forum. It would also be wrong intel 50% of the time over there

Followup - Miguel Berry was #7 in MLS draft today by Columbus Crew. No Development Academy - he stayed with local club and played 4 years in high school.

His older brother Alejandro played in HS with my sons, so I had some opportunities for long discussions about youth soccer and world politics with their father. If I understand correctly, Miguel would be eligible under FIFA regulations to play for Cuba (grandfather), Spain (birthplace) or USA (citizenship).

His bio is impressive, do you know how old he was when he moved from Spain to the US?

Seems like a good student, prolific accomplishments, stayed four years...a good story for college soccer.

I read an interview this year sometime where he talked about training with Barcelona's youth program, but he must have been very young because his older brother was playing with the local HS team in 2009-10 season as a Junior.

Unless Elmar has totally lost the plot, this looks like a great hire for George Mason.

How many former MLS players - and yes, I count the cups of coffee guys like Chaka Daly and George Gelnovatch had in MLS! - are now D-I (men's) head coaches?

    Kevin Anderson - Columbia
    Terry Boss - Oregon State
    Jamie Clark - Washington
    Chaka Daley - Michigan
    Chris Gbandi - Northeastern
    George Gelnovatch - Virginia
    Leonard Griffin - San Francisco
    John Michael Hayden - Louisville
    John Kerr - Duke
    Brian Maisonneuve - Ohio State
    Richard Mulrooney - Memphis
    Bo Oshoniyi - Dartmouth
    Russell Payne - Army
    Ryan Pore - UMKC
    Johnny Torres - Creighton
    Joey Worthen - Florida Atlantic
    Todd Yeagley - Indiana

    Am I forgetting anyone?

Also, though they didn't play in MLS, Brian Quinn (San Diego), Paul Krumpe (Loyola Marymount) and Kevin Grimes (Cal) all got capped by the US MNT.

I believe signing dates have moved but isn’t there some urgency to get these vacancies filled before entire recruiting classes are at risk?

In the case of a head coach dismissal, is it understood the assistants are gone too or are they back tending to business?

I would suspect in the case of retirees that the staff is still on board.

Understanding that assistants do most of the recruiting, it can’t help to have no head coach. That has to be an advantage for the other interested schools.

It's soccer. The ADs mindset is why not save a couple months of salary since most don't really care especially in the case where they will have to pay two coaches through June. BU and BC would probably fit into this category. Others are just getting back to it probably after taking a break post bowl game, etc. (WVU) Others the saving of salary is critical to the budget (EIU). School just starting this week or next so probably a time of year where some schools catch their breath. Granted a football or basketball coach is hired much quicker since it matters to donors, recruits, etc.

I believe that it was this thread on the speculation of WVU ex-coach Marlon LeBlanc coaching thoughts in the Philly area, Delaware might be a good fit.

    Interesting.

That's a good hire for B.U. and a curious career move for Nylen given that C-USA is a much better soccer conference than the Patriot.

I can only assume that Nylen or his wife (or both) were unhappy in South Florida and wanted to get back home.

He has a good resume - was part of an undefeated team that went to the College Cup at Denver and one that lost the national title on PKs last season.

He knows how to build a program and the caliber of player it takes to compete in a conference like the Pac-12 and be competitive nationally.

On paper, this looks like a good hire.
