Yup... Uly and Sabbi have shown the skill to strike the ball from outside the 18 this week and that is a trait that has been sorely missing for a long time from the USMNT.
With CONCACAF's U-20 World Cup qualifying schedule announced for June and July 2020, it pretty much eliminates a player to play in both U-20 WC qualifiers and the Olympics. As for Olympic qualifying in March, there is probably going to be a U-20 camp at that time and it will proabably be one of the few camps the team has before WC qualifying.
Uly seems to be at a tweener age right now... But I thought his form in limited play in U19 Bundesliga would get him on the U23 squad. It could end up being a blessing in the long run if he is able to make some 1st team appearances this season.... as then he might make the jump straight to the USMNT. I would much rather have him coming off the bench on the wing rather than Arriola.
Man, the love for Strange & New on here never diminishes... I hope Wolfsburg are taking a typical German approach of ‘let him settle’ then bring him to winter camp with the first team. But so far we’ve seen Uly doing things against high school aged boys and there are still several big hills yet to climb. Even with how well he is doing, the numbers are against him. But by all means, let’s put him on the national team.
i mean he also played successfully in the u20 world cup where plenty of guys are now getting minutes in top 5 leagues, but yes the thought that a physically mature uly might be a good enough player to see first team minutes and usmnt caps soon is preposterous
There are a few of us who argued for a middle ground (to see him with the u23s). He’s young so I get the counter argument but given the guys who are at that camp I think you could make a clear argument that he belongs at that level. Asking for him to be brought to the full NT, to your point, is foolish at this stage.
maybe he should be included with the senior Nats for his deadball skills alone. No one can remember a USMNT goal since 2017 even though 43% of World Cup goals were scored off of them.
An important article I wrote for @thetimes about “OK boomer” - the ultimate put-down to use against the anti-woke postwar generation. https://t.co/sTZ6c5Gwte— Titania McGrath (@TitaniaMcGrath) November 17, 2019
It's been a while since Uly has scored. I hope that he has already played well enough to train with the first team during the winter break.
10 goals in 10 matches... hasn't scored since 11/23... Hardly a dry spell IMO... but you never know what an organization thinks.
3-2 win against St.Pauli`s U19. Sofascore reports the first goal for Wolfsburg as an own goal, the club website as an Uly goal. https://www.vfl-wolfsburg.de/newsdetails/news-detail/detail/news/doppelschlag-sichert-auswaertssieg/
Called up for January camp. Does this mean that he isn't gonna play with Wolfsburg's first team anytime soon? https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...ary-camp-at-start-of-important-year-for-usmnt
I would assume Wolfsburg isn't as high on him as we are? If Wolfsburg isn't going to have him train with the first team then he absolutely should be in this camp. Hopefully, he gets a start and has a good game against Costa Rica's B/C team and builds some buzz.
I’m bummed about this. Sure it’s cool for uly, but like mentioned above, doesn’t scream “we love this player” from Wolfsburg top brass.
That’s my guess, unfortunately. hopefully, he’ll get his shot in the summer or maybe be able to push for a short loan.
Really want Gio and Uly on a short loans... the former has certainly proven to me that he warrants graduation from the youth squad. Uly started off the season on fire but the injury slowed his progress. Are you thinking a loan to another Bundesliga Team? 2nd tier Bundesliga? I have to admit that I am very impatient with the whole development process... I have changed my tune a bit about Europe due to said impatience... at this point, I would rather a young player start in the MLS then spend more than a half a season in youth leagues.... I like the route Adams took even though the RB thing made it unique. Would Uly be playing for the Galaxy in Feb if he had stayed? I dunno... but if yes, it is far better than playing U19 Bundesliga. Now, he hasn't been there a full year yet.... but if he spends the rest of the season on the youth squad I am going to be disappointed.
