I don't need any extra education on the political correctness of the situation-- I basically agree with you and have for close on to sixty years here. But as Zhivago says, while the surgeon is cutting away the cancerous cells, the rest of the body has to remember to sustain life. And there is a tiny amount of sense in the mostly senseless Christian Oppression myth. If Hinkle can hold her beliefs quietly and find it in her heart to "hate the sin but love the sinner," who cares if she believes that somebody's hellbound? If it gets her through the night and she doesn't use it to face somebody else down, it will poison her and no one else. And she is far more likely to be converted toward tolerance by association than she is to make Ertz or Lloyd or Morgan intolerant. To some extent it really does behoove us to choose another baker for the gay wedding cake-- if there is one in town. It isn't that the intolerant baker is right; it is simply that one doesn't need to beat him down if one can just bypass him and go about one's business. The real issue is not what she believes, but that she went public with it. That and that, to my eyes, she's not that Sandy Koufax level player that can refuse to play on religious holidays-- she's good, but not in the way that the USWNT needs of its outside backs at the moment; hers is a less offensive, less risk taking game. I repped the post it for two reasons--one was the last line, which is hard to argue with, and the other is, I am always glad to hear Andy's impressions-- because he gets to see a whole bunch of stuff that I do not. Even when I don't agree with him, I appreciate the eyewitness accounts...
The Post's Stete Goff is reporting on Twitter that the Spirit's Ashley Hatch and Jordan DiBiasi will be called in to this ID camp. Let the floodgates (of such information) open wide!
December camp roster announced (with a few surprises...at least to me; lots more college players than I expected): GOALKEEPERS (2): Jane Campbell (Houston Dash; 3/0), Casey Murphy (Reign FC; 0/0) DEFENDERS (9): Maycee Bell (UNC; 0/0), Malia Berkely (Florida State; 0/0), Imani Dorsey (Sky Blue FC; 0/0), Emily Fox (UNC; 3/0), Naomi Girma (Stanford; 0/0), Sarah Gorden (Chicago Red Stars; 0/0), Hailie Mace (Rosengård FC, SWE; 3/0), Kiara Pickett (Stanford; 0/0), Margaret Purce (Portland Thorns FC; 1/0) MIDFIELDERS (7): Danielle Colaprico (Chicago Red Stars; 2/0), Vanessa DiBernardo (Chicago Red Stars; 0/0), Jordan DiBiasi (Washington Spirit; 0/0), Sarah Killion (Sky Blue FC; 0/0), Kristie Mewis (Houston Dash; 15/1), Brianna Pinto (UNC; 0/0), Ashley Sanchez (UCLA; 0/0) FORWARDS (6): Bethany Balcer (Reign FC; 0/0), Madison Haley (Stanford; 0/0), Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit; 2/0), Paige Monaghan (Sky Blue FC; 0;0), Sophia Smith (Stanford; 0/0), Ally Watt (Texas A&M; 0/0)
I expected a lot of uncapped players; I didn't expect nearly half the roster to still be in college. Also I really didn't expect Kristie Mewis to get called back in after, how many years? 5?
Also important notes: -Only domestic based players were brought in due to time constraints. (NWSL players did know about the dates of the camp in advance to plan their offseason accordingly.) -For the players, Andonovski considers this a chance for them to earn call-ups to future camps to be evaluated against the veterans. -Gordon is the only player on the roster with no international experience at any level.
A more college-centric group than predicted. Exciting to see who makes the cut for January. From my original list of 35, 15 were included: Murphy, Campbell, Dorsey, Gorden, Colaprico, DiBernardo, Killion, DiBiasi, Pinto, Mace, Monaghan, Hatch, Balcer, S. Smith, Watt The following 8 have W-League/other int'l club contracts, not available for selection: -Bledsoe (Sydney FC) -A. Smith (Western Sydney Wanderers) -Menges (Melbourne Victory) -Cook (PSG) -Staab (Western Sydney Wanderers) -Ashley (Adelaide United) -Williams (Western City Wanderers) -Hamilton (Western City Wanderers) The remaining 11 don't have overseas club contracts that I can find, but were not selected: Hinkle, McGrady, Oyster (injured?) Riehl, Bingham, Sullivan, Weatherholt, McCaskill, Tymrak, Ohai, Macario. Vlatko has stated his intention to look across the globe for talent. So it's a good bet he's keeping an eye on W-League play, even if it's not the highest standard compared to NWSL.
That's the weirdest one for me, other than being Sam's sister, how did she pull off that invite? I don't remember her having an incredibly awesome NWSL season but maybe I didn't see all of the Dash games.
Someone mentioned that Macario was invited but was unable to attend due to previous commitments. Probably not that big of a deal considering she is still a few years from eligibility.
It is important to realize that the women's Final Four is December 6th & 8th and this camp is scheduled Dec. 9 - 14th, which is really bad time for an awful lot of college students as that's finals season (or the lead up to those). Those whose seasons are already finished may have an advantage as they might be able to finish exams early.
I'd be shocked if Emily Fox makes the camp. She was carried off of the field on Friday right past me. It did not look good.
How many careers are ruined every year by ACL injuries? An intriguing question for me is why some players get ACLs, and some don't. Is it just random? It doesn't seem so.
My theory is that it has to do with whether a person is double-jointed, but it's just a thought. I think people who are double-jointed have a lot more flexibility. I am not and I've had a ligament tear in my knee.
Women's basketball has had a lot of success with specialized coaching clinics on how to land after going up for a rebound-- which is basically the same issue as going up for a header. Apparently women as a demographic, because they have wider pelvises in ratio to their shoulders, are more prone to land with the ankle inside the hip, and it is that particular percussive stress that is to blame-- and people can be taught how to avoid those landings. But you still don't want to land on somebody else's foot...
Jaelin Howell in: 📰 | #USYNT veteran Jaelin Howell has replaced defender Emily Fox, who suffered a knee injury on Nov. 29, on the #USWNT ID Camp roster. The camp is set to take place Dec. 9-14 in Florida.— U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) December 4, 2019
Besides the different bone structure, another theory for why ACL injuries are more common in women is that hormones increase the tightness of ligaments, which could make an injury more likely at certain time of a woman's cycle.
Other last minute changes to the roster: -Madison Hailey, Naomi Girma, and Danielle Colaprico all are out with injuries. Morgan Weaver, Makamae Gomera-Stevens, and Kaleigh Riehl called up to replace them. So the roster currently in camp is: GOALKEEPERS (2): Jane Campbell (Houston Dash; 3/0), Casey Murphy (Reign FC; 0/0) DEFENDERS (8): Maycee Bell (UNC; 0/0), Malia Berkely (Florida State; 0/0), Imani Dorsey (Sky Blue FC; 0/0), Sarah Gorden (Chicago Red Stars; 0/0), Hailie Mace (Rosengård FC, SWE; 3/0), Kiara Pickett (Stanford; 0/0), Margaret Purce (Portland Thorns FC; 1/0), Kaleigh Riehl (Penn State; 0/0) MIDFIELDERS (7): Vanessa DiBernardo (Chicago Red Stars; 0/0), Jordan DiBiasi (Washington Spirit; 0/0), Jaelin Howell (Florida State; 0/0), Sarah Killion (Sky Blue FC; 0/0), Kristie Mewis (Houston Dash; 15/1), Brianna Pinto (UNC; 0/0), Ashley Sanchez (UCLA; 0/0) FORWARDS (7): Bethany Balcer (Reign FC; 0/0), Makamae Gomera-Stevens (Washington State: 0/0), Ashley Hatch (Washington Spirit; 2/0), Paige Monaghan (Sky Blue FC; 0;0), Sophia Smith (Stanford; 0/0), Ally Watt (Texas A&M; 0/0), Morgan Weaver (Washington State; 0/0)
