    Shrug.
He can certainly head to Europe or Mexico without any issue.
The fact that RSL traded his rights tells us all we need to know. That's what he's looking to do.

Nashville simply traded for his "MLS rights" in case the overseas move doesn't work out. A low-cost roll of the dice.

All of these mechanisms might change very soon with the new CBA.

Very nice! Clint, was that you lurking and snapping photos? Good job.

As long as Cannon's fiancé is 100% on board with an overseas move, then I have no objection.

Good replacement for Gressel. That's probably the best role for Lennon because he's a tweener. Not good enough moves for an a-wing nor defense for a fb. In ATL he'll be able to trail/overlap a creative fb drawing defenders and whip accurate crosses in or make runs into the box to take advantage of deft finishing skills he can't as a striker because he's not big enough.

I see this as a move to cover their bases, if Gressel leaves. If not, they can always move Gressel to Nagbe's position. They only have one real RB on their roster (Escobar), so he should see some minutes, and they also sometimes play three at the back.

RSL led the league in minutes given to homegrown academy players last season. Beating out FCD.

With Lennon and Saucedo now gone, it does seem like they're going in a little bit of a different direction. Two US U23 caliber players no less. I think Brooks Lennon is fairly under-rated on a club-friendly contract, What was the purpose of trading him? That surprised me. And they didn't need to trade the rights to Saucedo. Apparently they wanted to cut the cord long term. Why not retain those rights? FCD retained the rights to Emerson Hyndman for a long time...…………………...

Both their GM and head coach positions are technically vacant. Who's made the decision about Brooks Lennon? I guess we'll find out soon. Maybe even today.

I'm interested to what direction a new regime takes there.

RSL's production has dropped lately but it is hard to look like a club that wants to play homegrowns when your three best talents (Richie Ledezma, Taylor Booth, and Sebastian Soto) all jump ship for Europe. The club's only real standout player is David Ochoa and outside of that there has not been a player that has been seriously included in a ynt player pool for the 02's and younger. Luis Arriaga (2001) is another shout but Booth and Ledezma are better players. The only one was Zac Booth (Taylor's brother) who got called up early on in the cycle but was quickly beat out.

This is another reason they have also went out and grabbed a new academy director from Belgium with a very good record of success because they have had a slump from their academy lately.

This is the conundrum that we face as fans that want these clubs to develop young players capable of playing in Europe. Having all of Booth, Ledezma, and Soto leave on free transfer was not productive. And please................these solidarity/training compensation payments are peanuts.

Why would MLS clubs continue to invest in academies if all the potentially impactful players leave for Europe? If clubs aren't benefiting on the field or in the bank account, then why continue with that strategy? Believe it or not, businesses don't continue with money-losing enterprises. RSL has only finished higher than 6th in the West in one of the past 5 seasons. Their attendance has gone down each of the last 4 seasons.

I'm hopeful that the new GM and coach (maybe announced today) continue with their current academy focus. But we'll see. I won't be surprised if they move in a different direction. When they were doing well as a club it was with a strong South American focus.

These folks that say "Player X should leave his MLS club as soon as possible" miss the point that there won't be a Players Y or Z coming out of the club if that strategy continues. Its cutting off your nose to spite your face. It doesn't make sense.

The only strategy that makes sense, and is productive in the long term, is what we've just seen with Joseph Scally.

BY the way, an interesting signing apparently about to be announced in Dallas.
A Brazilian #6 from Palmeiras. It was inevitable that the Brazilian GM would start bringing in some Brazilian players. Another is reportedly on the way.

[Note what happened in central midfield last season when FCD lost of all of Pomykal, Cerrillo, Servania, and Acosta to international callups in the summer. That could continue in 2020. Not to mention I'm not sure what's going with Roberts right now. This to me is a depth play as opposed to signing a starter.]

It isn't just the fall back of players leaving. RSL for players born between 97-01 were incredibly productive and have not had one quality 02 or later produced which is incredibly strange. Usually they're a factory for good players.

Well..................is RSL going to invest a ton in scouting and recruiting if the players are just going to leave on frees transfers? What's the point? Sebastian Soto came from California. Richie Ledezma came from Arizona.

Is it at all related to moving the center of the academy out of Arizona (which I assume is pretty talent rich) and moving it to Utah? I know they still have a Phoenix branch, but it used to be the entire academy was there, correct?

Not really. At the start when they first picked up their residency program they were one of few residencies and MLS academies who actually cared. They recruited kids all over the country and got them because of a lack of options for many kids. An example of this was the best player from my club team all the way in Indiana who was immediately poached when their residency was started because other clubs did not really care as much at the time. Now they can't do that as much because other clubs are recruiting just as much and there is less of a pool to choose from.

They still do well getting Arizona kids but now their reach in other parts of the country has been reduced significantly. When Charlotte gets their team potentially this week then SKC's recruiting in that area will be eliminated which was how Jaylin Lindsey and Gianluca Busio were found. Now both New England and Houston are actively stepping up their game along with new clubs like St Louis, Austin Nashville, Miami, Sacramento, and Charlotte making it even harder for other clubs to recruit. Seattle is looking in places like Las Vegas (Danny Leyva) and New Hampshire (Austin Brummett) for kids now. RSL didn't regress but instead the other clubs caught up while RSL did not adapt to stay atop.

Clubs right now need to be looking into Indianapolis, Detroit, Phoenix, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New Orleans, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, and Omaha which are the large areas that do not have a team where talented kids need to drive multiple hours to go practice for another academy team.

Yes, they used to be at Case Grande in Arizona.

Arizona is still part of their "homegrown territory" I believe.

Clubs do go thru various cycle with strong and weak age groups.
Perhaps not a sympton of a greater challenge, but a natural event.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if NC gets a club as Busio's club before SKC is currently partnered with Seattle.

I don't remember many Uruguayan players -Texeira comes to mind- who were brought in when Clavijo was the TD in Dallas.

All top professional football club invest time and resource on their academy. If MLS clubs has any ambitious to be the top of the world, they have to do the same.

NC will be getting one potentially Friday as the MLS club owners meet Thursday to discuss this. It means that NC kids would more likely than not go to the local MLS academy unless they’re incompetent like the Fire or Orlando.

Clavijo had been in the US for a veeeeery long time, though.
His connections in South America were with Traffic, so all over South America.

Zanotta moved to FCD from Gremio, so he's obviously got connections there.
One of the first moves he made upon taking over at FCD was bringing in Bressan.

The rumor mill in Dallas has them connected to some other Brazilians. We'll see what happens.

The territories could also go away, which would be positive and would encourage the academies that want to invest in their academies.

By the time Charlotte got a team the territories would almost certainly be gone, but local academies will always have an advantage.

NCFC is also in the mix and is the source of historically the most fertile area of NC although neither Busio or Lindsey are from there.

    Now this makes more sense...

I think he'll do well there. Fits the style and should be comfortable culturally. May be our best player there, though Alvarado may rival him, seeing as though he's a club captain. LigaMX can be a black hole for club and country though. If he's productive it wouldn't matter though because we're thirsting for that and hard to argue with the stat sheet at a point.

If David Tepper is willing to invest over 300 million for his team then their academy spend will be off the charts. If there is a kid in either of the Carolina's that has a somewhat chance of being a pro prospect they will most likely be brought in and housed like Busio and Lindsey were at SKC. Miami, Charlotte, and St Louis getting ussoccer funded MLS academies will be huge for the growth of ussoccer ynt's and pro soccer in america. The amount of quality were producing already in the last 2-3 years is a significant increase and we're maybe at 50% of what we can be in regards to big areas having funded teams that actually care about player development. The future is bright.

Chris Garcia (‘03) was called into a camp or two this year, and if he’s not considered a regular, it’s an oversight on USSF’s part.

Jeff Dewsnup (‘04) was called into a few camps, as well, I believe. He’s another real high caliber player from their academy.

I don’t think they are struggling to produce players. I think what we saw was two golden generations with the 96’s/97’s and then the 00’s/01’s. They aren’t like FC Dallas where they can produce that many good players every year.
