I don't think economics would be a limiting factor if someone thought he was a game changer. I don't know that he's made that much of an impact. My rando fan sense of MM's reviews is "seems good enough, but not certain he'd move the needle." which generally doesn't get you a lot of money. We'll see how the 2nd half of Reading's season goes. If they start winning some games and MM bangs in a few headers here and there, who knows.

I agree with that but I also don’t think that Chelsea think he’s a game changer either. If they’re willing to let him go on a free, they should be happy with anything.

If I was a betting man I would place a bet that the route for Miazga to play in the EPL is being on a promoted team. And it won't be with Reading.

When he's on the last year of his deal I would be shocked if he doesn't go on loan with an option to buy for a top half (which lets face it is a promotion favorite) club in the championship.

Center defense is a place where you strengthen when you get promoted, but usually one of the starting CB's sticks and oftentimes being the 3rd option still gets you plenty of playing time.

No shame in it. Miazga is only 24. Plenty of time to make that leap. Geoff Cameron had only one season of MLS ball and Jay Demerit had only played a single professional season through at the same age.

Relative to the rest of the national team he has a bite and attitude that is reminds me of the 90/00s teams.

Not entirely sure why Miazga isn't good enough to be that 3rd/4th pairing. Probably because he doesn't pair well with Brooks.

I just don't think the amount they can get for him warrants anyone's significant attention at the moment. It's crazy to think that MM is unlikely to capture even 5% of CP's transfer, but that's the reality. Certainly if someone calls up with an offer, they won't pass up the money. But when Chelsea's office folk hit the chair on a Monday morning their first thought isn't "let me see if I can get 4 million for MM today..."

Is the club really pinching pennies? Because they kinda got him for quite cheap and I'd imagine they could probably sell him for that whenever the offer presents itself.

It's not pinching pennies, it's allocation of back office resources. I just think he's not even high on anyone's radar. When you're buying (or making plans to buy as soon as they unfreeze your account) players in the 50, 60, 70 million aisle, and looking to sell players in the same bracket, some guy in the loan army who might net you 500k +/- just isn't the guy you spend your time worrying about.

Which is not to say if his agent brought them a great offer that made them money and MM was dying to take they might not go for it. But they're not working the phones trying to get an extra 100k out of a Miazga transfer.

His contract was extended until the summer of 2022, right?

So he has two more summers to go to a team where he can prove something: promotion candidate in the Ch'ship, or helping to save a relegation side in the EPL.

I suspect the guy is a Championship lifer though, to be honest. A good one, like Lichaj or Spector.

Per Transfermarkt, it was extended to end-June 2022 so we can take it that he's tied to Chelsea until then. His problem in sketching out a career plan is that he's on Chelsea wages, albeit farm team wages, which would be fairly high even for the better Championship sides. That's going to price him out of even the Top 5 leagues, unless you're talking about their CL & EL sides, and there isn't a lot to suggest that he's - definitively - on that particular level.

Like you, I suspect he's a Championship lifer, possibly with a stint at the Old Firm and an early 30s move to MLS to wrap it up. And with average incomes in that particular league in the 600k Sterling bracket, there are far worse fates in life.

If he can put finish a strong year at Reading and do a strong Champs/Low EPL loan next season, he still might get his cup of coffee in the EPL. Will always depend on who needs a CD at any given moment. But playing in the Champs for Chelsea money is not the worst gig in the world either.

From what I can see online, his current salary doesn't seem too crazy for a Championship level team. Spotrac puts his salary at 780,000 pounds a year - they're a reliable source for American sports and seem to have good data for premier league teams.

An average team in the championship pays their players a total of 28 million pounds a year (but this is highly variable - range from 10 million to 70 million). If we assume a 27 player squad, that leaves an average of 1 million per player (with a range from 370,000 to 2.6 million).

Interestingly, it seems that Miazga is right about average for Reading (~740,000 per player).

He could always make the move abroad right. I can't imagine the Nantes debacle is so disaster on his CV.

How in the hell is Chelsea's GK earning 7.8 million pounds a year? Isn't he just 18 months from playing for a mid-table club in Spain?

Nantes was damaging, no question, but it's impact was never likely to be more than short-term. He'd done quite well in Holland, moved to a club whose season never caught fire and the board pressed the Eject button on the coach. The replacement coach was a club legend as a player and as a coach, with a track record of relative success wherever he went - and of having spectacular bust-ups wherever he went as well. Guys like that find it easy to take a particular dislike to individual players and very hard to change their minds, and he disliked Matt or his game pretty intensely so Matt joined Reading and was a key part of a revamped defence that kept Reading up last season and the Nantes coach left at the end of the season after yet another bust-up. If Matt plays the same role again this season and performs as well, Nantes will be nothing more than a (minor) bump in the road.

Nobody know how to pronounce Nantes, muchless remember that MM played there.

MM's resume: Chelsea signing. Loan army. Good stint at Vitesse. So far so good at Reading. He needs one more good season - either as an "identity" player at Reading or a loan to higher level club, either better Champs or low table EPL/Bund. If he can shine a bit in 2020-21, assuming his Chelsea deal ends in 2021, he'll have his best chance at a good move.

I say this as a Reading fan of the past 45 years, so with love. Miazga was everything Reading could have asked for last spring and again this fall is the bees knees. But as for bigger/richer/better clubs in European footie rescuing him from his Berkshire hell, it says something about his prospects that his best option this fall was a return to Reading. 18 months on loan at the same club indicates that Chelsea is thinking the MM marketplace is only attracting one shopper (and it’s closer to a Tesco shopper than a Tiffany’s shopper). If the post that his contract with chels ends in 2021 is correct, then by this summer he’s nearing the low point of sell on value for the club, and he really does not look to be in their own long term plans. Agreeing to a second long loan to Reading kind of says Chels is expecting an offer next summer on a permanent deal and that the boss is away and they’re ready to accept any offer, no matter how crazy. For Reading, and I think MM this is not bad. For YA fans wondering if the next stop might be Bmunch, or at least Wolves, this notion might be a bit depressing.

If anyone thought MM was going to Munich, they better have been thinking 1860. And I think it's clear Chelsea doesn't care about MM from a financial POV (again the amount they could hope to recoup, forget make, on him is not barely 5% of CP's reported transfer. Nobody is working the phones digging to get an extra 250k for MM.)

But, if he does go for nearly free, (assuming he's still getting good reviews the rest of this season) that is his best chance at a low end EPL club taking a shot on him. Basically he's set his range: Proven good enough to be Upper Ered/Lower Champions. Not proven good enough to be upper EPL. There's a lot of real estate between that floor and ceiling, obviously, but it's not crazy to think (hope?) that some lower EPL club thinks he's worth a flier (although his salary won't be cheap - but whose is?)

Of course they do unless they are massively resource constrained which i doubt Chelsea is.

Having watched both Ream and Miazga in New York (and still arguing til I'm blue in the face that Miazga left a year early), I will be extremely disappointed in Miazga's club career if he doesn't at least equal Ream's. Miazga has so, so much more raw talent.

"Nobody" is an exaggeration, but if you quantify what they can get out of MM, compared with what they spend on/receive in top transfers, let's say "it's not top of the to-do list."

I mean, according to transferM in 18/19 Chelski spent >20 mill USD on 8 different buys, for a total outlay of >300 million USD and their top 9 sales were >7 mill for a total of >250 mill USD. (And they had 0 sales of less than 7 mill.) 18/19 they bough 3 guys for money for a total of 283 mill lbs. and sold 2 guys for 40 mill and 10 mill. Everything else was loan fees. You have to go back to 16/17 and Marko Marin and Stipe Parica to find players they sold for under 7 mill.

So, sure there might be some coffee person trying to get back the 3/4 mill they spent on MM if it doesn't take too much work, but it's not a major priority.

It's only going to help if he's actually good enough to take advantage.

At this age, Ream was two years removed from being second-team all-conference in the Atlantic 10 and had made it all the way to the Premier League.

Miazga is almost 7 years removed from amateur soccer and has dropped from Premier League -> Eredivisie -> Ligue 1 -> Championship. His trendline sucks, and I hope he can turn it around soon.

There's a bit of cherry-picking in there, but Miazga really should be an established first division player by now.

Championship vs. Eredivisie is roughly equivalent, especially once you get past Ajax. And unless times have changed, presumably MLS and the Eredivisie are "first divisions".

He is in the Championship because his Nantes loan sucked, he needs people to pay his wages, and his EPL parent club is most-comfortable dealing with other English clubs. If he were bought by a Bundesliga team, he'd likely be playing either in the 2.Bundesliga, or the First Division in one of the Low Countries. Which is plenty good enough for the USMNT.
