I don’t know specifically. Maybe there wasn’t a release or maybe Kreis just went with older players. It’s very hard to play up an Olympic cycle. Uly is eligible for both the 2021 U-20 team & the 2024 U-23 Olympic team. Mendez & Ledezma are eligible for neither of those teams. There is plenty of more opportunities to work with Uly in the US setup before the full NT (unlike the other guys you mentioned). In the first 4 camps of the U-23 cycle, there have been a few players getting called up who are eligible for the 2024 U-23 team (Reyna, Araujo, Cardoso, Ochoa) but in this camp, no one is playing up. It is what it is. If I was going to put one player on this U-23 roster who is eligible for next cycle, it’d probably be Miljevic over Llanez. I know a big thing right now among some in the fan base is to downplay importance of first team minutes. I disagree. They’re rightfully prioritized by most people. First team minutes are just a whole different level in terms of playing 1) against and with developed adults 2) for more meaningful points in the standings and 3) against and with people who are fighting for their jobs so they can feed their families, pay their mortgages, etc I suspect a lot of the urge to have Uly on this roster is mostly due to the fact that people are worried that unless he’s rushed through the system at rapid pace, he’s going to bolt for Mexico. When you take a step back and think about it, he’s progressing through the the YNT system at a nice pace for a top prospect - which he is.
Thanks this is helpful. I have zero concern about him going to Mexico. Just was curious about a couple selections (specifically Mendez) over Uly. My perspective is that the full USMNT should be for players getting first team mins, other than very rare exceptions. I’m more open to it at the u23 level and was curious about Uly given that several guys on this roster aren’t playing first team ball.
I have at least some concern that Uly will defect to Mexico now that he isn't even on the U23 Olympic Squad... but if the fed has discussed it with him (preferably in person) and stated that they want him as a cornerstone piece of the 2021 U20 WC squad then I can kind of understand.
PROSPECT | 🇺🇸 Uly Llanez (18) has hit double-digits in the U19 Bundesliga as of today! ⚽️✅ 8 games⚽️ 10 goals🅰️ 2 assists💯 Undefeated with him in the XIThat’s number 10 for Wolfsburg’s number 10! 🔥🕵️♂️- @uly_soccer7 pic.twitter.com/eeGibjw0D3— Football Wonderkids (@fbwonderkids) November 10, 2019 Uly Llanez scores the opening goal for Wolfsburg U19’s, a 3-1 winKid can’t stop scoring https://t.co/HoeYOFQr5u— USMNT Only (@usmntonly) November 10, 2019
As a prospect, I'm pretty high on Uly given that he possesses a nice combination of athleticism and skill that should translate well to higher levels. His production playing up with our u20s as well as his strong start with Wolfsburg's u19s is also promising. I don't know much about Wolfsburg, but statistically they've conceded the fewest goals in the Bundesliga but are tied for second worst in goals scored. That they're solidly mid-table despite struggling badly on offense hopefully bodes well for LLanez to get a chance to impress with the first team over winter break. Anyway, top prospect who should be managed carefully by USSF given his dual national status and representation.
Uly has scored in almost every game he has played so far this season. Pretty impressive. Wolfsburg could use him... if they like him we should see him before the season closes.
https://tv.dfb.de/video/11-spieltag-a-junioren-bundesliga-alle-spiele-alle-tore/26656/ Yup... around Minute 17. Sick bending ball. BTW... From what I have seen of his highlights this season I think he is playing significant minutes at left wing as opposed to right. But that is just based on some videos I have seen of his goals.
Uly Llanez's 10th goal for the Wolfsburg U19shttps://t.co/BQ9oORc6XY— scuffed (@scuffedpod) November 11, 2019 GK should have saved it, but it shows Uly's skill.
Silver lining of him not being included on the u23 side is that he'll get some extensive 1st team looks in training (and perhaps a friendly if they have one) during the international break.
The only sick thing about the goal is that keeper was probably playing sick. It hit him straight in the gloves, and he managed to let it in.
CMon... give the kid credit for the bend. But I can understand why you would call out the GK... he must have weak hands.
This one at 1:14 was better but it shows that he has the skill to score goals like these: 1163223771391676417 is not a valid tweet id
Thanks for posting this. Wow. He had some really nice runs in this one. Was that two goals and an assist? Looks faster than I originally gave him credit for.
Maybe with the 1st team during the winter break? Ab in den Profi-Kader! Spätestens im Winter 💪💚 https://t.co/lDEuqxBZYY— 🟢𝙑𝙛𝙇.𝙒𝙊𝙇𝙁𝙎𝘽𝙐𝙍𝙂.𝙉𝙀𝙒𝙎 (@Wobscorer) November 11, 2019
He needs to move up and there’s no reason for them to wait. I don’t think it’s good for him to stay and tear up the U-19 league. Move up to more suitable challenges.
No, he should leave him with his club so he can hopefully train with the first team and make a case for first team minutes after the winter break. This is a big opportunity for him to break through with a solid club. We shouldn’t be calling kids up to the NT in this manner anyway.
Uly has the shot that not many Americans have. It's one of the huge skill gaps we seem to have versus the rest of the world -- we simply don't have a ton of guys who can place shots in a game setting.
