Draft picks have really lost their value over the years. I certainly wouldn't expect us to pick five times in the first forty-three picks, but I also don't know how much we'll get in return for picks in trades. Trading up or trading for a little bit of allocation money seems more likely to me than trading for veteran players.
Maybe if you can grab a top-5 player, sure, but most players after that would be lucky to even make the team. But now that we'll have a real reserve team we might actually be able to make use of a "project" who can develop into a solid player in a couple of years.
While there are a few serviceable players in the draft, it's value is definitely decreasing. Last year, 21 of the 96 picks were passed. That's embarrassing. PHI traded their entire draftboard (5 picks) to CIN for GAM. Even CIN ended up passing on 2 of them. Of the 3 Philly picks CIN used, only one played for CIN this year (Tommy McCabe, 6 GP, 244 min). Win: PHI
The draft is a "tradition" in sports, but maybe the next CBA would be a good time to abolish it, or at least restrict it to only one round. Let everyone else be a free agent. let them trial with the local team or USL team or wherever the player thinks he has the best chance of sticking. Some guy who gets drafted by LAFC or Atlanta would be much better off if he could trial with Cincinnati or one of the teams that isn't stacked with high-quality players and has a decent reserve setup.
When it comes the draft, they do have a reserve team to stock. Maybe there's value to just drafting five players and seeing who can cut it.
Mancienne says Europeans (including himself before coming here) underestimate the level of play in MLS: European players weigh in on the level of MLS, how players compare to overseas November 6, 2019, 1:33PM EST Jonathan Sigal
I think Mancienne's assessment is about right. The better MLS teams would be low- to middle-level Premiership teams and as Ziegler says, they'd be among the better teams in some of the lesser leagues like Switzerland or Austria. Some of the leagues that have a few dominant teams (Ajax, Feyernoord, PSV; Benfica, Porto,Sporting, etc) most MLS teams would probably be as good as or better than most of the teams other than those.
Revs have signed another Academy player. https://www.revolutionsoccer.net/po...ign-midfielder-damian-rivera-homegrown-player
Day two of the trade window. Would be curious to find out if the Revs are fielding calls and for who. I'd be there is interest in Diego
When a player gets a run-out of 4-5 games and doesn't show at least something, then I'll say he wasn't good enough. Herivaux never got that chance. He was just one more victim of our lack of a 2nd team. We already have Zach2, Zach3, ... having their abilities squandered - hopefully next year's USL team can revive their careers.
Turner getting some love from MLS website staff: The Top 5 MLS Positional Rankings for 2019 November 13, 2019 2:48PM EST Bobby Warshaw Goalkeeper 4. Matt Turner AM 3. Carles Gil Wildcard: 2. Gustavo Bou
I have to say, there were a lot of goals in the playoffs that I thought, "Turner would have stopped that." Matt's got holes in his game, but he's able to reach shots that keepers for the top-of-table teams just watch go by.
Haven't seen this anywhere (maybe I missed it), but we signed another homegrown player, 16yo midfielder Damien Rivera out of Cranston, RI (Parkhurst's home town). Something like 8g in 8 games in the fall season for the academy U19 team.
Not really new news, a few hours old on social media. DeJuan Jones will remain with the #NERevs in 2020 after a strong rookie season in which he made big strides while transitioning to outside back.Jones, the 11th overall pick last year, will now occupy a senior roster spot. https://t.co/XmFIpqWcKy— Jeff Lemieux (@jeff_lemieux) November 15, 2019
And a few hours older. Report: Juan Fernando Caicedo won’t return to the #NERevs https://t.co/q4jkgo9Cpt pic.twitter.com/89IlSiotwH— The Blazing Musket (@BlazingMusket) November 15, 2019
Not really surprising on either front. Signing a high level striker has to be #1 on Bruce's priority list, no?
I don't think JF Caicedo ever really got a good run-out to show what he could do. I think the road game at NYC showed how snake-bit he was in that respect: he scores an early goal on an outstanding individual effort, then has to get pulled early because of the ridiculous red card. I think in general he looked pretty good, but I'm not sure he really meshed with either coach's style.
I don't know if JF asked for his release so he could move on, but I would think that they might want to keep him on the roster a little longer so if Miami or Nashville were interested, they could take a player the Revs didn't want anyway. And then there's no chance of losing anyone else.
