I think it can if, for example, Team A has beaten B and C but B and C are level, then you'd go to other criteria to separate B/C. As things stand, we've beaten Ajax, Ajax beat Valencia, Valencia beat us. So then it's goal difference just in games among us three.
Quite a few years - they occasionally tweak it, but currently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019–20_UEFA_Champions_League_group_stage#Tiebreakers Teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings (Regulations Articles 17.01):[2] Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams; Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams; Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams; Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams; If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams; Goal difference in all group matches; Goals scored in all group matches; Away goals scored in all group matches; Wins in all group matches; Away wins in all group matches; Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points); UEFA club coefficient.
That absolutely was a handball against Veltman, he put his hand out there. He was even moving it away from his body. If you want to argue that it wasn't intentional it sure as hell was a handball. That was easily the weirdest officiated match I've ever seen. We should have one, Ajax should have won, I guess 4-4 was about right.
I missed this game, doesn't look like I missed much?? Sounds similar to the 5-5 game with Liverpool in the Champions League a few years back? Sounds like such a remarkable game that I thought I would go and talk to the Dutch boys about it but they appear to be playing the 'victims' and going into meltdown lol - for some reason they seem to have taken a sudden dislike to Chelsea supporters! Honestly are they all aged 5 or somethig? So I thought perhaps it would be best not to! lol :-D
Congrats to your team for what has to be one of the most entertaining matches of the season. I still don't understand the calls on the two YCs that sent Blind and Veltman off. I only presume that Veltman's was for dissent as an incidental handball isn't deserving of a YC. Both players caused their own downfalls by taking really stupid YCs in the first half and I knew that one of them would be sent off before the end of the match. Also, the 2nd Chelsea goal might have been off sides but I guess VAR fixed that one. Good luck in the next two matches. Only Lille is out of it right now.
two teams. the second half. i only saw the second half. who showed the greater will to win. The greater desire. Chelsea FC. i am not going to mention the Ajax pitty party. Who had the greater desire? Chels. Ajax were lucky to get a draw.
Weirdly, I believe it's been confirmed for the handball. I've watched this a few times, the ref seems to point to the spot straight away and then turns around to Blind to issue the second yellow. It was a weird turn of events. I think any set of fans would have been livid if that handball wasn't given in their favor. In hindsight though, I don't see it as a yellow card. I think that's the problem with VAR though. It isn't standard from league to league. Gary Lineker, said it after the match, in the CL that's given but in the PL it's not. Also, if a hand ball, of any sort from an attacker, can automatically rule out a goal, then the same should be adjudged here as while his hand was in a natural position in being it was down, but it truly blocked the flight of the ball. That would have likely been given if it happened outside of the box. All in all, what a match, ups and downs, a 9 man side saying ******** it and having a go. I want to be entertained, tonight I was in bucket loads. Thank you Ajax!
Reece James gets the spot. Alonso is toast. Dave plays at LB. Unless is Emerson is fit. first half . . .Ajax had one shot on goal. Proof. Chelsea had more shots on goal in this game. The Ajax players have a weak mentality. Chelsea deserved to win
Ya, crazy game. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite teams of my relatively young Chelsea fandom. The D may be a little too ‘exciting’ but I love this group’s collective spirit. They seem to really be enjoying the game and each other. Frank’s just so wildly exceeded my expectations.
With the exception of the two handballs that were given, one against each side, I thought that the officiating was actually pretty good.
Over on the Referee forum, there was a comment that any hand ball in the box on a shot on goal is a YC. If the determination is for a hand ball then the YC is automatic. It's harsh but stuff happens.
20 minutes with a 2 man advantage and they still could not win the game????? Over all it was an even match, Ajax superior in the first half, Chelsea in the 2nd. My hope is for a rematch in the CL finals to settle once and for all which team is better.
What a night, over the years there I have been to some great CL games and last night's was one of the best, not quite as good as when we beat Barcelona but almost as crazy as the night we lost to Barcelona. The stats said it all. At halftime Ajax lead 1-3 despite only having one shot on target. Fair play to them for still attacking with 9 men. The next round of games will be decisive if we can get a result at Valencia, otherwise we will be relying on Ajax still needing a result against Valencia in the last round. Next up is Palace, they always put up a good display at the Bridge.

The more we play, the more we look like the scummers of two years ago, all we need is a big bloke, good in the air and the roar of a lion to get the back sorted out. Shyte luck on two of those goals, deflected in by Tammy and the second one was hilarious, in off his face...FFS. However, it does bring up a constant and concerning point that not even two VVDs brought into the back line will resolve.Namely, we have gone brain dead around our box.I mean, we can't defend a set piece, that's been pretty well established and now AJAX have shown the whole bloody league the precise way to put a ball into our box...yet we still, constantly and continuously, give away fouls in front of the goal. This has to be worked on, it's not normal and it's not acceptable at this level. Also, this is squarely on the management. I've seen a lot of football over the years, but thats the first time I've ever seen a 9 man side attack the opponent and try and win.Fair play. (of course, it is also indicative of how poorly our defense is regarded)
