OK, time to make your picks for who the Revolution should protect for the upcoming Expansion Draft. Each team is allowed to protect 12 players. Designated Players are not exempt and are eligible to be selected if not protected At least 3 Internationals must be protected So if you were Bruce Arena, who would be your 12 players?
So here are my picks: Gustavo Bou -- DP, International Carles Gil -- DP, International Matt Turner Cristian Penilla -- International Tajon Buchanan Brandon Bye DeJuan Jones Teal Bunbury Andrew Farrell Jalil Anibaba Scott Caldwell Wilfried Zahibo -- International The other guys I considered protecting were: Juan Fernando Caicedo (OK, but we can do better) Antonio Mlinar Delamea (not likely to be picked) Diego Fagundez (might be better off getting a fresh start somewhere else, but we can still use him if he stays) It seems like Aguedelo's time is up, and guys like Rennicks and Heriveaux are still young enough to be exempt IIRC. Either of Cropper and Knighton would be good as a backup, but not both.

Turner • I'm assuming that Caldwell and Fagundez are both vulnerable. • I think Knighton is a great back-up, and doubt that an expansion club is going to try to grow with a 34 turning 35 year old keeper. I can also imagine Cropper being useful trade bait. • Agudelo and Mancienne are hugely overpriced, and I feel that in an era when we actually can expect new signings, and that Zahibo, JF Caicedo, Castillo, and Penilla are improvable commodities as well. I wonder if we won't see Büttner in the Dmid role. • I could see an argument for protecting Scotty instead of Anibaba, or even Buchanan
019 MLS Expansion Draft process: Club Drafting Authority: Each participating club (Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC) must designate one representative to make selections Rounds: Five rounds as Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC can select up to five players from the eligible pool; they can only claim a single player from any one club Selection clock: Permitted three minutes for each selection Timeouts: No timeouts Trades: No trades permitted during draft Key parameters: General Allocation Money (GAM): Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC will receive an additional sum of allocation money as compensation for five exempt teams, protected Homegrown players, and the one additional protected player per team in the MLS Expansion Draft. For a club that has a player claimed from their unprotected roster, that team will receive $50,000 in General Allocation Money for the selection. Protected/unprotected player-related rules: The following five teams, who had players selected by FC Cincinnati during the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft, are exempt from the 2019 Expansion Draft: D.C. United, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, and New York Red Bulls. The other 19 returning MLS clubs that competed during the 2019 season can protect 12 players between their Senior, Supplemental and Reserve Roster. If the player’s contract expires at the end of 2019, he will still be considered part of the club’s Roster. If a club protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate a new contract with the player as in previous years, subject to the CBA. Option Decline Free Agents and Out of Contract Free Agents are part of the Expansion Draft and are not automatically protected. Players on a club’s Supplemental Roster, other than Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2019 MLS Season or Homegrown Players – ages 25 and under (born in or after 1994), are eligible. Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2019 MLS Season and Homegrown Players (ages 25 and under –born in or after 1994) on a club’s Roster at the end of the 2019 MLS Season are automatically protected. Clubs do not have to use a protected slot on them. Designated Players are NOT automatically protected (i.e., clubs must choose whether to protect such players and if such player is not protected, he will be available for selection in the Expansion Draft). If a player has a no-trade clause in his contract, his MLS club must protect him, and he will count as one of the 12 players who may be protected. Retired player rules: If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Expansion Draft, but his club will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to re-enter the league. International player rules: Clubs with four or more international players must protect at least three international players, excluding any automatically protected players. If a Club has only three international players, it must protect two. If a Club has only two international players, it must protect one. A Club that has only one international player is not required to protect that player. Selection of Free Agents: If a Free Agent is selected in the Expansion Draft, the expansion club that selected the player will gain his previous club’s ability to negotiate a new contract consistent with the CBA. The player’s 2019 club would be treated as a new club for purposes of the Free Agency rules. If either Inter Miami CF or Nashville SC selects a Supplemental/Reserve Roster Player, it must offer him a Senior Roster position and he must remain on the Senior Roster as of Roster Compliance Date. Maximum player loss: Once one player has been claimed from a club’s unprotected roster, that club is eliminated from the Expansion Draft and may not lose any further players. Right to negotiate: Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC will have the right to renegotiate a selected player’s salary (either up or down) without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous club a right of first refusal.

Bunbury 7. Turner 8. Bye 9. Jones 10. Caldwell 11. Cropper 12. J.F. Calciedo I believe Zahibo, Manciene, Agudelo and Delamea make too much and bring too little to be attractive to expansion teams. Castillo has been replaced by Buttner and Jones is a decent back up which makes Castillo expendable. A loss of any of these 5 would not be a huge blow to the team

As for the balance of the squad that can be exposed to the draft; I don't think losing anyone of them would be a serious blow to the team. Part of me thinks that losing a Penilla or Zahibo would be good. Then BA has to go out and get a replacement.
Us CPAs have to stick together! I put Scott in the Parkhurst category; a smart, intelligent player who doesn't have superior athletic ability. But I think he can be a valuable player for the team as a part-time starter or off the bench. Also, he is inexpensive, which might be tempting for an expansion team. I agree with the other posters who commented about the salaries of some of the Rev's players that don't match their output. I'm leaving them all exposed.

If I had to fill it out, it would be between Bunbury, Agudelo and Knighton. Seeing how he just signed new contract, I think the Revs look at Knighton as their backup keeper and Cropper as the expendable one. I'd also think it would make sense to see what the Revs could get for the other two in a deal. (Same for Fagundez) As for the rest of the names, I wouldn't say all of them should be on the roster next year, but I don't think it's a good idea to leave someone exposed before we know who might replace them.
Fagundez seems like an ideal fit for Miami and the Latin culture within the club that they're looking to build.
I'm not sure just how "Latin" Diego feels. He grew up in in Central Mass, along Rt. 2. He's basically your typical Mass boy in constitution, who probably shares more culturally with me (who also grew up in Mass) than the Latin culture.
I think Fagundez is protected since he is a HG player under 25. I also read somewhere that he may be out of contract Dec 31. If true he may end up being traded if they don't come to terms soon. Me may bring in a decent player or GAM
I wonder if we're not completing Buttner's signing in order to avoid exposing him to the expansion draft. It'd make sense - it'd be a pain in the butt to have to lose another protected slot due solely to the date of the contract.
I haven't run the numbers, but I would leave both backup keepers unprotected, as well as some of our over-priced/under-performers like Agudelo, Castillo, Mancienne, ... I think opening up additional cap space is a top-priority and I'm not too concerned about having to replace a backup keeper - I think Cropper is more likely to be picked, given his age, and if he's selected, we can probably pull a player back (if it's like previous expansion drafts). I could easily see us slide through without losing anyone, given then number of teams in the league now.

I had forgotten how young L. Caicedo is. He is still early on his learning curve. I want to see whether offseason training with Da Bruce will help his decision making. I feel the same about Penilla and Zahibo even though they're further along in their careers. I was tempted to put Penilla in my "Dump" pile because of his non-existent left foot, but his upside seems worth keeping. I kept Delamea because, until we upgrade, we need to have a central defense. It was between him and Jalil. Anibaba's ability to play left back is no longer so important with Buttner coming in. Fagundez has the skills to be a decent squad player and is also decent trade bait. Agudelo is pricey, but I was impressed with his play as the B2B midfielder. At 26 he is still young enough to learn. He's another one I'd like to see have an offseason with the new regime. If we bring in a serious upgrade at that spot he is still decent cover in a number of positions.
Yeah, I think that's the case. No reason to officially add him to the roster if it means one less player we can protect. As for the guys who have potential but haven't really lived up to it (Fagundez, Agudelo, etc.), considering the coaches they have had until now have been, um, maybe not the best at seeing certain attributes in a player and helping him develop to the point where he can best take advantage of them (and that includes playing him in the right position/role), I'm OK with giving Arena a shot at turning them around. I'm also OK if we lose one of them, since, unlike previous years, I think our DT will know how to get someone at least as good, if not better as a replacement. In other words, he won't be telling us with a completely straight face that, whaddayamean, they did replace Clint Dempsey, and his name is Andy Dorman....
That was after he was Dempsey's replacement. Just in case anyone is wondering, Burns actually did cite Dorman being played in the same role as the reason they didn't go out and get another player to replace Dempsey.
Fagundez is a sub 25 HG player, but he is paid too much to be on the supplemental roster. Because he is on the main roster he is unprotected Delamea is interesting because he was arguably the CB on the roster last season, and doesnt occupy an INT spot. Yeah he makes a decent amount of money, but i think he can be valuable to the team. Id keep: Gil Bou Turner Farrell Caicedo Bye Jones Bunbury Cropper Diego Penilla Delamea Cropper/Diego because i want an x-team to have to pay to select them.
Buttner's contract wouldn't start till the window opens up, so unless I'm mistaken, he's not going to require being put on the expansion list.
I think Monty's saying that it doesn't matter when they announce the signing, he still won't be eligible for the expansion draft.
