are they paid any less for friendlies during the season? or is it simply they're paid by the week regardless?
And Wood scored at about 12.. (came off around 72 with the game 1-1) And had another chance, apparently 1182330350896332803 is not a valid tweet id Dunno why this video is just them gathering for the KO but that's what we got... Okay, so wollten wir das hier sehen: Bobby #Wood egalisiert mit links ins linke Eck - der Ausgleich quasi im Gegenzug nach Vorlage vom aufgerückten Timo #Letschert. #EBSHSV pic.twitter.com/HO3EZDiS7h— Rautenperle - NUR DER HSV (@rautenperle) October 10, 2019
He should ride his contract to the bitter end, he's never again going to get that much dosh. As the best-paid player, riding the bench is not exactly good PR. Not even MLS is going to be willing to pay a commensurate salary. Shame, this guy always gave his everything for the NT.
On the other hand, riding the bench is not good PR no matter what kind of check you're cashing so might as well be a big one. If he wants to play badly enough he'll be in a better position to take a pay cut at the next stop.
Come on, the answer is obvious. With the possible exception of the preseason semi/pseudo competitions, friendlies count for precious little in terms of revenue or anything else, so even first-team regulars have little leverage (Messi or Suarez could go "I know it's against Inter but my hamstring is still tight, I've no idea why, so I think I'll skip this trip. An extra 50k appearance bonus you say? I think I'll risk it." but not the rest of them). A bench warmer has no leverage, still less with an international break friendly against RL or Oberliga sides. As far as the club's concerned, it's "this is a chance to stay fit and maybe get your groove back. You've got a hamstring twinge? OK, we'll give the U-19 strikers a run-out."

I think the big source of Wood's problem is the knees. It's a bad sign if they are bothering him with so little play. Really sucks.
Had high hopes for the kid. He always made Jozy look better (IMO). So much hunger to score. Wood was excellent during the Copa tournament in 2016.
Okay, so doing the math on this does it make sense for him to flee, say in January? He turns 27 in November, right? So, a speed guy with knackered knees is looking, best case scenario, of retaining good value in the striker market until he's 32. But that's best case scenario. If he leaves, say in January, he's looking at a short term deal, but maybe as long as three years. It will almost certainly not be a better deal than an MLS TAM signing_ or equivalent. Right around $1m a season. This is conjecture, but really, not playing at 2Bl for two years, and with knee issues, its a generous conjecture. He's on €3m a year, so $3.3m, and that runs through June 30, 2021. So, if he leaves in January, he's leaving just about $5m on the table, though, of course, we'd have to subtract the $1.5m he'd now be earning. Still, he got an additional 18 months of contract out of the deal, so assuming he finishes at Hamburg, and he's finished, forever, that means he came out $2m ahead by sitting tight, minus whatever the next contract brings, though that assumes he would miraculously heal with a new deal while he would totally diminish with the current deal. Of course, it assumes that he loses all value to all other clubs. I think we can safely say that right now he has a limited value in the 1 or 2BL But I find it very hard to believe that any level offering to him by MLS in January would not be available in 2021, though at a lower level, so say Benny Feilhalber post SKC to LAFC, LAFC to Rapids, and Rapids back to SKC: $413k. If he gets an offer to buy from a club that needs him and matches what he's now on, yeah, he should move on. But if he doesn't, this is a guy who sacrificed his childhood, living in club setup 9000 miles away from his family from 14 years old, and finally got that contract with Hamburg (willingly, there was no gun to their head when they renegotiated). I think, in the hopes of making it big in European football. He just about did, and now that journey is on the downhill slope. I don't begrudge him, at all, for sitting while making serious bank for the next two seasons then seeing what's possible. Those on here who think this is a good idea may be right, but I do question how many of us would leave $5m on the table because, you know, I might get another job.
The only thing that makes sense for Bobby is to run out his contract. He may retire at the end with chronic knee issues. If HSV want to buy him out, maybe he will retire earlier.
It seems to me (just going off what I've observed with no inside anything) that his knees have slowed him, but perhaps more psychologically than physically. It's not a good sign they were bothering him after 71 mins (and perhaps it was a bit surprisingly honest of HSV to admit it - not the best way to try to retain value in a player) but they still have him training and on the bench... Maybe HSV just want to get him late-game garbage goals so they can sell him, but I wonder if his issues are more like, say, Rubio Rubins - who can still play full games, just seems to not be a the level he was before his injuries... Anyway, I hope for Wood's sake the knee thing is just taking a long time to resolve, but that seems unlikely at this point. He should get as much $$ out of his remaining playing years as he can.
Importantly, I hope that his knee problem does not stay with him for the rest of his life. Not as bad as a head injury, but still.
Let's just remember he was the first Yank to score in his first two games in the Bundesliga (once each, Wynalda didn't score in his first but scored two in his second).
I believe he has always been a bit of a worrier when it comes to his knees. Not saying it isn’t justified; just that he doesn’t wait until something bad happens before raising his hand.
fwiw, this cat floating the idea that Wood may start tomorrow based on training session with him as a CF... ¿XI HSV? Looks like he's in the squad. No idea if the rumors of a start will prove true. #1 HSV v #3 Arminia in Monday Night Fussball. 1185916302940147712 is not a valid tweet id
He's a month away from his first year anniversary since the last time he scored a goal in a non-friendly.
FYI, he made the squad and made the bench but didn't play in a 2-0 home win. Not that you were expecting anything else ((
In this timeline they haven't played yet and the game is away, so we don't really know how it ended yet. I've hear from people in yet another timeline that the game ended 0-0, and it was not against Arminia. The Many Worlds Interpretation has messed up everything.
Went to Transfermarkt and looked up the last scoreline, forgetting about the international break or looking at the date. Or the BL2's customary Monday night game for that matter. My bad. My age. My dying brain cells. My everything . . .
not sure why anyone would think he'll start in this big game vs 3rd place? he's on the bench for the match.
