    Whoosh!

But Ray-al is a soccer name, and this is the reeel Portland, unlike those microbrew neck-bearded hipster posers on the west coast!

I was more making a general comment on european naming schemes in general not being very applicable, not necessarily commenting on your joke.

    A few other naming things:
Dynamo - bourne from the Soviet initiative to create powerful athletic clubs. Spartak also has similar roots
AC - athletic club, which only makes sense if a team actually is born from an athletic club with a whole bunch of other activities. (Same with Sporting Clubs).

American teams that dont meet the criteria for their name shouldnt use the name just to sound more official. Thats all I'm about

That or anything "FC." I'd like to see a South American style name like "Los Billionaros" or "Kraft's Naughty Boys."

The original Dynamo club was formed by the secret police.

    Not always.

Manchester United Football Club isn't the result of a merger. Rather, the Newton Heath LYR Football Club - made up of players employed by the Carriage and Wagon Department of the Leeds and Yorkshire Railway - broke with the railroad, necessitating a name change. After alternatives including Manchester Celtic and Manchester Central were considered and dismissed, Manchester United Football Club was settled upon.

Similarly, Leeds United Football Club didn't result from multiple clubs joining forces. The team was launched in the wake of Leeds City Football Club being expelled from the Football League and disbanded as punishment for making illegal payments to players.

If there isn't one - at least in OTH - then there should be. Manchester [by-the-sea] United!

They could go with FR for Full Release.

As for the main news, got to give Arena credit for turning the Revs into a professional organization. A real reserve team? Not playing on football stripes? It's enough to make your head swim.

I figured as much. Maybe they'll do double headers with the first team? Otherwise, I can't imagine what attendance will be. Maybe they envision using the training complex in the future?

Doubleheaders would be fun... especially if the USL game was earlier. I could see myself popping in for the 2nd half to check out the younger players. It would also extend tailgating time if there were 2 games!

Yeah, I'd guess they'd use a field at the new training complex.

Probably the biggest barrier to this in the past has been the cost of a field: either paying rent to someone else or footing the expense of opening a huge stadium. This is probably exactly one of the advantages of a comprehensive training facility that was envisioned.

I like the accessibility and access at Harvard, but I wouldn't be surprised if they use this facility for USOC games as well. Hopefully not, though. The attendance for USOC games in Foxboro has been dismal for the most part.

Playing in Gillette sounds like a Burns move. probably cost effective for the Revs but missing a chance to advertise their brand to another part of New England. A for having a USL team, C- for having them play in front of 300 fans in a 60K seat stadium

Where do other MLS/USL squads play? I assume player development is a higher priority than public relations.
I wonder what it costs to just open up Gillette, either for a single match or earlier, if they plan on doing any doubleheaders.

Well, in the old stadium, I remember Brian O'Donovan saying that it cost $40,000 just to turn the key in the padlock to open the gates. That was more than 20 years ago, and certainly the cost of operating Gillette is going to be a lot more.

They used to play the reserve games on the practice field out back. The Pats had their training camp there, and there were aluminum bleachers on both sides, which would probably be enough for a USL crowd.

FC Dallas' L1 team, North Texas SC, who finished atop the table this year, plays in Toyota Park (same as parent club).
TFC II plays at the BMO Training Ground (capacity 1,000)
Orlando City B plays at Montverde Academy

Loudon United play in their own stadium though. Not sure if any others do

North Texas S.C. is moving into the old Ballpark at Arlington next season with the Texas Rangers moving to new digs.

I've been to a bunch of patriot's preseason practices at the field out back and they get a LOT of people out there for those - certainly enough for a team like this, in the early stages.

    Personally, I'm fine with it.

The primary objective is to get reserve players quality game time, so that they develop and are ready to step into the lineup when they get the call. So, if they want/need to keep a lid on the expenses, I have no problem with that.

Nick Firmino, if I'm not mistaken, came up from the academy and was on the roster all season, yet never played a minute of action (he did get time vs. Chelsea in the friendly; I don't remember if he saw any USOC action). That should never happen - and with the new 2nd team, it shouldn't.

I remember hearing about those reserve games. Alway wanted to go to one since they sounded like a blast.

I would guess they're going to try to have double headers as often as possible. It still probably costs extra to open the place up a few hours early, but that would be more cost effective than opening it up just for a USL game.

The release mentions the possibility of playing matches throughout the region. My guess is they plan to do double headers and play the other games elsewhere.

It's fun rooting for a legitimate team. I had given up on them the last few years. Being a Revs fan is fun again.
