Miki Turner seems to think that this wouldn't affect their case much: https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/commen...14urn?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share His point about USSF using seems like it stands regardless whether or not they join a league or not.
JD, with or without the Cosmos how is NISA any different than any other D2, D3, etc. league? The clubs will fail/succeed based on their front office/owner operations more than their on-field performance. Pro/Rel, turf, and all the other nonsense is secondary to each club securing their financial survival in their own community. Whether the Cosmos are in the league or not will not affect other clubs.
The case isn't about the Cosmos, though, it's about NASL being able to operate. I don't see why the Cosmos not playing in a league would change the fact that Miami and Indianapolis (for example) are, which, if that has bearing on the case, has already been undermined. I'm not sure that it does though.
The Cosmos would provide a financially stable member which helps league continuity. It doesn't affect another club directly, no, but the more teams that are on secure financial footing means that the league has a solid core of teams to depend on to keep the it intact. The larger that core, the more credible the league gets for investors, etc. because it reduces the risk that half the teams will fold in the off-season. But you're right, Cosmos would affect NISA, not Cal United Strikers or Michigan Stars.
AFAIK, it's currently another "fly by night" league that tries to woo fringe fans with buzzwords. At the end of the day, leagues need clubs/teams more than the other way around in order for the league to get out of the starting gate, which is why the NISA and other leagues are in the midst of a land grab/war/foofooraw for these assets. Heck, I'm amazed the NISA even managed to get this far. Plus, I'm an Indy Eleven fan. My cognitive biases make me want to find any excuse to find faults in the Cosmos regardless of how successful my team is.
Honestly the only effect the Cosmos would have on a league at this point is negative. They’re a failed branding experiment that was established for trading on the nostalgia of a team that last played a game almost 40 years ago. And it’s a brand with a history of failed leagues and owners left in its wake, in large part due to the machinations of its owners at the time. NASL, O’Brien, Nu-NASL, and now NPSL Founders/Members Cup. NISA may not have rejected them, but they’d be wise to do so given their own precarious position.
The current ownership had nothing to do with Nu-NASL failing. Cosmos weren't the reason why Founders Cup didn't work out, and Members Cup is doing fine, although unfortunately they might win it. This is projecting a lot of history onto an owner that had basically nothing to do with any of it.
Never said the owner, I said the team. And they were a big contributor to both NASL incarnations demise. And the Members Cup is closing up shop after this season no?
But the only connection between them is that they have the same logo. It's not like the original Cosmos organization was involved in NeoNASL. O'Brien bought the branding, but if he hadn't and fielded the NY Soccerbockers would the outcome have been different because they weren't called the Cosmos? This is like blaming the fact you got in two car wrecks 30 years apart from each other on the fact that you were wearing Levi's both times. It only existed because the Founder's Cup fell apart and all of the remaining FC clubs were already in NPSL. Given that NPSL is trying to start a full season league as a result, it looks like they must have thought it was successful enough.
Connections directly, no. Connections in mentality, definitely. It’s like anyone who touches the brand gets delusions of grandeur. And honestly if O’brien and his cronies had fielded the NY Sockerbockers and run it and the other clubs like what they were, D2 teams, and hadn’t over spent, antagonized USSF, etc... who knows. NASL might still be around. As for members cup, my understanding is the new full year NPSL is non pro right? So not so successful.
I definitely think the brand is attractive to a certain type of individual, but I think there's a difference between wanting to own the most famous brand in a given sport to get rich off of it and wanting to own the most famous brand to own the most famous brand. As loathsome and detestable as he may be, I don't think Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys to get rich off the brand, he bought it because he could own the Cowboys (although since he originally tried to buy the Chargers, he might have been happy with any team). The value of the brand is a bonus, of course. Commisso is more in that camp.
Members Cup is non-pro (minus Cosmos). I'm telling you, Members Cup wasn't an intentional thing: the only reason it happened at all was because the Founder's Cup schedule was already set, so the clubs needed matches on those days and were all already in NPSL. It was never intended to be a league, only Founder's Cup was. "The NPSL Members Cup is a fall 2019 tournament beginning on August 10th and concluding on October 26th. The participants are NPSL member teams, and the tournament is governed by the United States Adult Soccer Association." https://www.npsl.com/members-cup/
A68 I completely disagree, if the Cosmos join NISA the other clubs will not be affected negatively or positively. At this level it's club by club, market by market. And yes, NISA needs as many clubs as it can get because some/many are going to fail. I would think Chattanooga, DC, & Oakland will survive, probably some others currently on board [I'm trying to follow along!] but none of these clubs needs the Cosmos or MLS2 or 3 teams; they're on the own, sink or swim.
It’s funny, I was doing a check with USPTO to see if the USL San Diego team had trademarked their new name yet (they haven’t that I can see). But I came across SD 1904’s TM, which has been abandoned. http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4806:uijqq6.4.1
I recently did a couple of searches concerning the “Connecticut United FC” team that has been somewhat confirmed for NISA; nothing came up. Both their web and social media presence is non-existent. These teams are hobbling over the finish line.
This is assuming that these teams are even close to the finish line.....then again they might be finished before they even started.....
Was told last week that @JaxArmadaFC remain focused on the stadium project for now. When asked about @NISALeague specifically, was told, "No league is an option until we have a stadium."— Nipun Chopra, PhD (@NipunChopra7) October 21, 2019
University of Jacksonville plays in a 5K football stadium. That would have been an ideal venue, with the only compromise likely being them finding their own turf to bring in to not scuff up the Dolphins' own turf. I think it's more that the organization wants their place built first, which doesn't work that way.
