From the Rooney article: "I feel that American players get underpaid," he said. "I feel they deserve to get more money to stay in line with football in the rest of the world and in terms of the American sports." A couple of comments: 1. Rooney is forgetting that American sports leagues outside of MLS do not only consist of the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. There are other pro leagues that pay less than MLS. And he should have been around for the early years if he thinks wages are low now 2. If compensation were equal around the world in all the top leagues of every sport, than what would drive a player to consider playing in another league aside from a curiosity to play in a different part of the world?
He's just doing his bit for the players' union (he did another one recently about the charters, which you can tell is an organized union campaign to put the issue into the public eye). Not sure how much it'll help though, since he's leaving.
Rooney would have helped his argument if he would have made a statement about quality of play in MLS. Because MLS pays American players less, they are considered lower quality. Paying players more will raise the perception of the quality of players in the league.
well, wayne could distribute some of his $3.5 mill salary to help the underpaid players on DCU on a serious note, overall, the last 12years have been a tremendous success for MLS- some things need tweaking- such as travel, especially for teams that have a HUGE amount- but we dont want to end up with the dilemma that is going on and will escalate in england where teams are having to fold until TV revenues vastly improve, MLS and its owners must be prudent
Looks like Don Garber just issued a warning at the Canadian Soccer Association NEW: Garber tells CSA they "need to figure out" how to engage with @MLS teams for the good of Canadian player development#MLS commissioner Don Garber had a message for the CSA in Vancouver on Saturday in terms of developing Canadian playershttps://t.co/JC6XIDzi2a— AFTN (@aftncanada) September 16, 2019 “I am excited about the development of the CPL,” Garber said. “But we do need to work together to figure [things] out. The Canadian Soccer Association needs to figure out how they’re going to engage with Major League Soccer teams that are investing millions and millions and millions of dollars per team, not including what they’ve invested in their academies and in their infrastructure, to ensure that that investment is going to help develop the Canadian player, and help justify the investment that they are making, otherwise that investment is going to go away, because right now, it’s not making that much sense.”
well MLS players should claim there "oppressed" , playing on turf is a "human rights " issue and sued the USSF. Wallla higher pay
Now who can argue with that? I think we're all in debt to Gabby Johnson for stating what needed to be said.
I'm particularly glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic BigSoccer gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age!
Interview with Chicago Fire owner Mansueto up on MLS https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/09/17/chicago-fire-re-brand-new-owner-joe-mansueto-has-his-say I like the fact that they have an interview with him so shortly after the complete takeover. Some may not like that the organization isn't emphasizing a soccer-specific stadium at this time, but I'll give him some leeway since the augmentations of the Bridgeview lease. Besides it seems like he is working more on the potential to fill a bigger stadium. (And, the Chicago Fire organization could be checking out land in stealth mode). Other item recently posted: New Columbus Crew stadiums breaks ground on 10/10/19.
If Rooney came out and said these guys, in general, are good enough to play in the Championship, where players make over £350k per year, that would be meaningful. But, I agree that just saying these guys deserve more money doesn't address the issue of why they players are worth more. The question is where would a team like LAFC be if they were in England? Would they be above the drop zone in the Premier League, where team salaries budgets are upwards of £50 million per year. (Yes, top teams salary budgets are well above NFL teams). And, MLS is a parity league where most teams are about the same quality.
True, but that door swings both ways... How would a mid-table Premier League club...Burnley, for example...deal with long plane flights across the continent with time zone changes, playing in Houston in August, playing in St. Paul in March, and playing in Salt Lake City anytime. I think the general wear and tear might surprise folks across the pond. It surprised Roy Keane.
