Van der Gragt has become a real threat with her headers. Had an excellent goal in the World Cup against Italy, scored the first Dutch goal last night off a corner with her head, and then had a beauty in the 2nd half off a corner that was kept out by a very good save by the Turkey keeper.

I’m actually not sure about that. I’m pretty sure there was contact from the defender’s leg that brought down Beerensteyn as she was cutting, and even though Beerensteyn’s feet may have been outside the box as she started to fall, that contact looked inside the area to me. It wasn’t much contact, but I don’t think I would overturn the call based on the replays I saw.

According to a Dutch news report, Miedema will not play in this Sunday's Champions League match against Fiorentina. I haven't read anything about the severity of her hamstring injury, but we do know that you have to very careful with them and not return to play too soon--before complete recovery. You don't want to risk re-injuring the hammy as you would then be out of action for a long time.

Seeing as the match against Man Utd is on Monday, I was taken aback. Champions League match is on Thursday according to Google.

Arsenal's chief blogger, who is usually dialed in pretty closely to club developments, just wrote that Miedema "should return" to action against Fiorentina. I thought I read on AD News that she was not going to play, but maybe I misread the story--the computer translates the Dutch into English, but not very well and so wording is often garbled--or maybe AD News got it wrong. Not sure. We shall see soon enough if she plays.....Just wanted to clarify this based on a more recent report.

Anybody heard anything about Marten's recovery from her toe injury? I don't think she was even on the bench today for Barcelona.

  7. The AD report only mentioned Miedema might not be playing depending on how her hamstring injury goes.

looks like the Dutch outnumber the English in Arsenal's starting lineup today. Now if someone could provide a live stream, we could all watch this gig

So, in the end Miedema started and it's making a heck of a difference!

    Currently 0-4 at 68', with a Miedema's brace.

I would have sworn that the most steep wall to climb for Italian teams was Barcelona, but Juventus managed to resist quite well instead. Fiorentina... not so much! :x3:

here's the highlights; shabby defense led to Miedema's 2nd goal

if nobody shows up for the games(check out the bleachers), why is the CL the most important yearly event in Europe?(as I feel its ruined the continents, WC chances)
    &
is that Lisa Devanna for Fiorentina?
that's like puttin spaghetti on the barbie, mate!

What is important for the clubs might not be important for the fans... they showed the main stand it looked full during the game.

Yes she is. I respect her, but at 34, and probably towards the end of her career, I am not sure she's the kind of player Fiorentina are actually needing to raise their game.

Eh, I don't know about that. It's considered the most important yearly event in Europe by a number of people likely because of the men's side (where it definitely is the most important yearly event) and because it's where the top/best sides from different nations do play against each other in the later rounds.

Note: I just read somewhere that UEFA is thinking of introducing a group stage and advancing three teams from each country into the Champions League for the 2021/2022 season.

Edit: Like SiberianThunderT, I'm not entirely thrilled by a 16 team group stage.

I did remember which thread this was being discussed in! Ok, so its not exactly about your question, but Sarina Wiegman spoke at the FIFA Conference on Women's Football and talked a bit about the player's pathway in the Netherlands. What stood out to me and made me think about this thread was when she said, "A boy or girl...wants to play. We don't say, 'its a boy or a girl.' Its a soccer player, and this soccer player wants to play the game." According to her, the Netherlands intentionally keep competition at the lower levels mixed between genders, and are encouraging clubs to stay mixed. They want to keep it this way.

Jump to 2:40:00 in the video for the start of the Q&A with Wiegman (and jump to about 2:54:00 for the part on player pathways):

Just saw Wiegman's selection for the next Euro qualifiers and no Martens or Van Es on the squad. Martens toe injury was obviously quite serious, though I've not heard a precise diagnosis, since she is still not ready to play. I think it's been two months that she's been out of action. Same with Van Es--still out of action with...what? I forget--knee injury? Let's hope they both come back healthy soon.

Whoops: I somehow missed the fact that J. Groenen and Van de Sanden are also missing from the squad because of injuries. Groenen is said to be recovering from an "upper-leg" injury while Van de Sanden is doing the same from ankle problem. So that's 3 starters will will miss the matches against Slovenia and Russia. It shouldn't be too much of a handicap for the Dutch, who have enough backup talent for these matches, for sure.

Van De Sanden injury is not short term, I am sure I read it somewhere in the run-up to the Trophee des Championnes last week.

here was FC Twente Champion's League match vs an Austrian team. They'll advance on aggregate. Not really any well known names on either squad

Steph Van der Gragt is having knee surgery again and will miss the next European Championship qualifiers and maybe more. Not sure what the knee problem is--ACL, something less serious, I don't know--and so not sure how long she will be out. She's had a lot of injury issues over the last couple of years, including an ACL, I think. Hope this knee problem is not too serious. A lot of Dutch NT players are banged up at the moment. I'm not sure what kind of knee surgery Van Es had either--did anyone hear? She's been out of action for a while.

Did you get that from a Dutch source? I haven't read anything from a Man Utd perspective, which is a bit annoying. Still going to try and wake up early for Man Utd - Liverpool even if Groenen doesn't play.

My Google translator always calls Groenen "Greens." It's funny.

Van de Donk not only got her 100th NT cap but scored the winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Russia. Miedema, natch, scored the other goal. Van Lunteren was subbed out early--31' or so--I hope she is not hurt. The Dutch have a long list of injuries and played this match without 5 regular starters, I believe--Martens, Groenen, Van de Sanden, Van der Gragt and Van Es. Ouch. Get well, ladies.
