First choice RB at the U20 WC, has been with us for like 3 years, he has legit friends on the US youth teams. I won't be too mad at the Fed if he decides to switch, it means we were never his first choice anyway.

Gregg will call him up in September, followed by October. If he declines, what more else could we have done?

Yup. I mean this whole discussion about how the USSF "doesn't know about" Dest is total nonsense. He's been in the USSF crosshair for years. [First identified by Dave van den Bergh four years ago.] Then when he committed, he's been a regular participant with USYNTs (from u17s to u20s). The idea that the USMNT staff doesn't know about his is total hogwash.

What I see on this thread is assumption after assumption after assumption after assumption regarding his commitment level to the US program. While folks' with these assumptions end up being right? Maybe. But they're not basing their assumptions on anything that Dest has actually said.

This is very true, but if he’s not on the roster for September big soccer will explode no matter the reason

Who here is saying the USSF doesn't know about Dest?

What the heck is the purpose of this message board? It's so wild to me when people here want to talk about the future, but for some reason speculating is not allowed because we don't know. Yes, we get it. That's why we are posting on a message board for fans, rather than writing for some news publication.

Further - assumptions ARE based on what Dest has actually said. He said he hasn't closed the door on anyone, despite being "a regular participant with USYNTs". If that doesn't allow for speculation, once again, it's time to close down BS altogether.

Ya know what else I speculated about? Jon Gonzalez. Then everyone, like you, said "don't speculate, he has friends on the team, let him SETTLE IN AT MONTERREY".

Berhalter should call Dest and tell him he wants to call him in for September and Nations League because he believes he could be the option for the World Cup.

And I'd push a little. If Dest doesn't want to cap tie, bring him in in September as a trial on both ends.

And if he doesn't even want to do that, what's the harm lost?

Let the player -- NOT the Club -- determine if he wants to stay and settle in. Dest can make that call for himself.

I highligh "Not the Club" because US Soccer seems obsessed with not pushing the Clubs at all. Stop being so tenderfooted and close the deal. Ajax will get over it.

Yeah I know the Fed has a really bad rap right now, probably somewhat deserved, but if using the "rational choice theory", I think Gregg is a rational actor, he is going to be calling Dest up for September. I hope he shows up.

The communication problems may be worse than ever. Who Knows?

Your speculation is warranted. In my opinion. Its just the surface of a player evaluation problem.

To elaborate on what I feel is a deep evaluation problem.......

Dest, Araujo and Soto all have the potential ability to be as good or better players than Tyler Boyd. Yet, it feels like we have a lack of urgency to cement guys already connected to the program. I could be wrong but if the article is true......Its not good that the communication is not there.

Add in that all these young players mentioned above are playing in positions of need.

    This is a problem

Tyler Boyd is better than all of them.

Also, all of the players you mentioned have been given golden opportunities...they have had the red carpet already unfurled at their feet.

If any of them chooses to switch, it’s totally on them.

I used the word 'potential' for a reason. I never said that they were currently better than Boyd.

This should be a simple concept to grasp. Dest 18, Soto 19, Araujo 18. All are showing signs that they have the potential to exceed Boyd professionally. This does not mean that they are currently better. Although the argument can be made that Dest is at least on his level.

Dest, Soto and Araujo all are on a upward trajectory with the potential to be serviceable national team players. Its not an either or situation. Boyd need not be excluded because a player is being brought into the fold. USA needs to keep all the talent they can and integrate them into the system as soon as possible. The deeper the pool, the better.

Losing players who are already part of the system is inexcusable. I could understand losing out on a Boyd or Saief. As they were with different nations as youth. Our own youth players leaving at this rate is alarming and concerning.

Perhaps you can elaborate on this red carpet?

Dest has the highest ceiling of all 3. No doubt. That being said, Boyd is way better than Morris, Zardes, Llegett, Roldan, any of those MLS guys - they all stink. Boyd showed his class this summer. Happy to have him.

Dest is way better than Lima, better than Cannon, and I would rather have him than Lovitz on the left. Can you believe Lovitz played in the GOLD CUP FINAL AGAINST MEXICO? Lmao

They just returned from the U20 World Cup.

That involves receiving opportunities that others in their age group and the age group ahead of them did not have. None of them were established professionals during that time period. They were all developing players.

Dest has been repeatedly called in by US Soccer even though places like BigSoccer complained about his call-ins just like they do everyone else.

Dest was not only called in, but he played a key role on the US U20 team. That tournament was a growth point for him that could be tied directly to the current development in which his club team is testing the waters to see if he's ready to contribute more at Ajax.

I will be surprised if Dest is starting for Ajax in April. I could see him being back to Jong Ajax by then, depending on whether Mazraoui's knee is more than a 2 game knock. Ajax asks a lot of their outside FBs. But any minutes are good minutes.

I dont see how this equates to red carpet treatment. He simply was one of the best full backs in our youth teams. Not really more complicated than that.

I agree Dest is better than Lima and Lovitz no question

I personally think Cannon is a better defensive full back. Dest is a better footballer as far as technique, attacking play and linking play going forward.

I can actually see Dest playing as a winger for us at some point in his career. If he decides to play for US.

Where I disagree slightly is on Boyd. I think hes kind of overhyped in a sense. Hes a decent player but I dont see him being miles ahead of Morris or Zardes.

A player doesn't have the right to that playing time. The program is much bigger than they are. Its a national team.

The program honored him with the opportunity. If the player doesn't see it as an honor and a privilege, that's a problem in its own right.

That's the red carpet treatment...you get a shot to represent the United States at the highest level instead of other players who want the opportunity. In representing the US, you get access to a showcase on a team that has other solid budding pros. You get a WORLD CUP with the US crest on your chest.

If a player doesn't appreciate that, then I don't want them.

    I agree.

Its typical for clubs to give a test run out to players like Dest who have just shown to do well at the highest international level.

Odds are good that he'll be an occasionally used player, but not a stalwart.

I’d be surprised if he’s starting in April too but I’d be more surprised if he was back with Jong. He isn’t their first choice but they clearly value him. He’s not only getting burn at outside back but they’ve thrown him in at what appears to be CM/CDM in champions league qualifiers where there’s a lot on the line. He’s got value to them and they’ll likely rotate him through their 11 as a spot starter and sub all year.

Well, he sure shoots like an American.

That said, I'd pencil him into the starting lineup at left back in a second.

Last time we had an Ajax left back on the squad he did pretty well. When healthy. <knocks wood>

So what about the other players who get called up. Is it red carpet treatment for them too? Or does that only apply to certain players?

We have no evidence that Dest wasnt honored by his call up. What we have is a top nation showing interest in him due to rise in the last few months. Its perfectly natural for an 18 yr old boy to have conflicting thoughts regarding a decision that can influence his life for years to come. Dest case is different from most (if not all) in our pool. Top nations are not clamoring for our dual national prospects in that manner.

I hope the staff at ussf arent on some high horse. Once a player chooses he cant go back, so his heart will inevitably be in it.

Captain America Bradley didnt look like he wanted to bleed for the shirt down in Couva. So everybody can miss me with the faux patriotism act. I could care less. I want to see the best players available. I dont want to wade in these hypocritical double standards.
