HSV was (and still is by all indications) a complete mess (they had the most costly squad in the whole league, unnecessarily fired the coach, with the new coach proceeding to ensure that the club wouldn't even make the promotion playoffs). At the end of the season all players that weren't going to stay anyway were left out.

Agree with the last part but I would not call it a mickey mouse league, of course not the best league but good enough for him now. And he will play in CL also.
Fixed, HHC was never going to succeed at a club going down the drain at all levels. That's not his fault.
As HSV's top signing of the summer, he was inconsistent and out of form for many parts of the season. HSV loaned him hoping he could replicate the kind of performance we see in the video below. If you want to blame everyone but the player that is fine.
Look, HSV had by far the biggest budget in the whole league last season and was know for its hubris ("die Unabsteigbaren"). HHC was just a loan player, and plenty other players (retained or otherwise) where 1. Buli grade. HHC was one player of a squad of 29 players, the team barely performed as a team, the club as a whole barely performed as a club. Concluding from this that HHC (or many of the other players) couldn't perform in the league is making a mess of a mess.
