I like Joao, but he only shows in spots, and is nowhere near consistent - and is unlikely to be in the future. Rhodes has been even less impressive at Wednesday, but has a much better track record of consistency - and at least it's plausible that he could be a real asset. And with better width (which Harris and other possible incomings will improve), the chances of Rhodes coming good increases. But … in the end, I'd guess neither was going to impress as we'd like, and I won't rue the loss of either.

But I'm a little concerned about the loss of both. Each would give us (ok, you) different ways to play, and to end up with just Fletcher (the only one that must stay) and Nuhiu (who I love, but if I'm honest, is a bit shit) might limit the attack, or at least give fewer options.

At any rate, which we'd prefer is immaterial, as Joao's already gone, and Rhodes will likely be*, too. It's a little odd, all this movement, when we don't know who the manager will be, ergo who he would want. Unless it's gonna be Bullen, but I doubt that.

    Who knows?

*edit: update ... supposedly-respected Norwich ITK is saying that he won't be returning to NCFC.
and for what it's worth, I forgot to mention Winnall earlier. But I don't think he gives Wednesday much that Fletch and Nuhiu don't; whereas Rhodes should. In the end, though, I'm envisioning Fletch giving us around 15 goals, and nowt but crumbs from the rest, whomever they are. optimism really isn't my thing.

little early for a derby, isn't it?

good result away in the first game... would like to see us cement the good form with a proper stuffing of barnsley in the home opener.

We need to name Bullen as manager and get on with it.

or just get on with it, leave him as interim, entertain options, and in the meantime give him the chance to earn it.

I feel he's earned it already.

How many times has he been in this spot?

I know he's said he doesn't want the job before but...

that's a table full of Yorkshire lads, and no mistake.

i'll have a listen to that again just before my next trip over. it'll keep my Yorkshire comprehension skills in good nick, so maybe I'll stand a fighting chance of understanding uncle paul at the new barrack tavern.

I like him, and would have no trouble with him getting the job. That said, I don't think you'll find many at Wednesday that would agree that "he's earned it". He's never held any managerial position before, save a few interim matches with Wednesday. They'll say they should be bringing in someone with a proper managerial CV rather than handing the reigns to a novice. At the very least, they'll say that putting in a successful year or two at a smaller club would 'earn it'; but if we're honest, even that wouldn't do for most. They'll be wanting someone who's had success at this level - preferably more than once. That's why folks were wanting Hughton and that's why they were happy with Bruce.

Leaving him at it for awhile, then, is kind of a compromise. It would give him a chance to 'earn it' by getting results as the de facto manager for a couple months. If they're near the top of the table come October, hand him the keys. And if results don't go so well, you bring in the new gaffer, whose transition will be easier with Bullen still there, not to mention Bully'll still be in a job rather than finding himself unemployed.

ok, I've just watched the full 45 minutes of four deluded dingles. I actually enjoyed it, though.

I may make an effort to track down the next one after they've been hammered at Hillsborough.

I saw your EFL Cup game was postponed, so I checked why. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...expulsion-carabao-cup-sheffield-wednesday-efl is from 5 days ago and is titled "Bury face 14-day deadline to avoid EFL expulsion as Carabao Cup tie suspended." Bury is in League One. It would be unusual if they were expelled and League One played a 44 game season with clubs having off when they would have played Bury. I'm assuming it's too late to promote a League Two club to League One. Bolton and Bury both have 12 point penalties. Bolton has a draw and a loss to reach -11, while Bury hasn't played. It could make it unusually easy for the rest of League One to avoid relegation.

Yeah, I'd heard folks at Wednesday talking about Bury, the likelihood that they'll to go to the wall, and the suspended Cup fixture. But I hadn't looked into it enough to see what they would do about filling their position in the League. Obviously they can't just promote a club from League 2, as that club would have spent their summer preparing to compete in the lower division. And of course, that would create the same kind of vacancy in that division … and so on down the ladder. So yeah, a 44-game season makes sense.

And it will, indeed, make survival in League 1 a more achievable prospect for a lot of clubs. That said, remember that four go up and down between Leagues 1&2, so there will still be two more clubs making the drop even if Bolton and Bury succumb.

    Millwall 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

You had 70 percent of the possession, 78 percent of the completed passes, more shots (21 to 3), and more shots on goal (9 to 2). Millwall scored in the 37th minute and got a straight red in the 43rd minute, but you didn't take advantage.

sounds like they weren't very good, though. better in the second half, but I'm hearing some minor grumbling - even with the win. I'm looking forward to hearing Bullen's post-game, as he's usually pretty straightforward about what he was thinking tactically.

3 wins out of 4 to start the season and there's grumbling about how we looked? someone needs to put a foot up their backside.

grumbling is probably the wrong word, to be fair. folks were talking about the quality of the play post-match, as is normal. and in the context of Lee Bullen and the technically vacant manager's position, there was a bit of back and forth on the degree to which it reflected on how he managed the match and how much was just down to players and their execution. so it really wasn't so much grumbling as just discussion - so that's on me. my point was simply that, having not seen it, it sounded like they didn't play particularly well.

that said, I mentioned that I was interested in seeing Bullen's post-match comments, and having done so i can say he was absolutely delighted. he conceded that the first half hadn't gone well, but was pleased by how well they'd adjusted, and how they'd seen it out. he stated (as he did after an earlier win) "we'll play better than that this year and lose". you can tell that he's pleased with the character of the team, and that they're winning when not necessarily good.

Luton Town isn't a bad side by any stretch.

I wouldn't be surprised if they finished at midtable, or the low end of midtable.

Hopefully we are fully aware of that now...

Odubajo having a 'mare, from the sound of things. Conceded two penalties (both converted) and Wednesday down 2-0.

    Doesn't look promising.
